HI Arthur I have looked in the above books of MI's and there are no Ann Rankin entries in them. There are a couple of Rankin entries in the Yetholm book but they are much later than your Ann Rankin request. If anyone wants a look up in both books - that is Yetholm or Eckford, please let me know and I will put them on the list. Cheers Mandy Buchanan
Hi First of all - thank you Carmel - that has been a fantastic help - it throws up a relationship that I was trying to work out - it gives me the date of death of someone I had been trying to find and also mentions a couple of people that I didn't know about which is fantastic. Amazing stuff - thanks a lot. I notice that Arthur is interested in the Rankin entry - I have the death notice from Scotlands People which might help you. Registered in Lauder, Berwickshire Anne Cozens Rankin died 27th Aug 1914 - states she is married to George Rankin which usually means that he is still alive only problem is it is very faded and difficult to read and his profession stated looks like "MJS" - I don't know what that means. It states that they are living somewhere called Allanbank in Lauder. There is nothing else on the notice which would assist you with the Rankin side of things. Their marriage notice was in 1887 and is not really better to read but I will give you what I can see I think it was 13th April 1887 - I cant read the location and it was after Banns according to the Church of Scotland George Rankin - Writer to the Signet (that means he was a member of a society to which solicitors belonged) and he was a bachelor aged 34 years and his residence looks like 26 Judia Street Edinburgh - his father was William Thomson Rankin deceased and his profession is very difficult to read but looks like ***** to the Parliamentary Council - his mother appears to be Sheila Rankin ms Pringle One of the Witnesses is AJ Rankin - but it does not say whether this was male or female. I hope that helps. Certainly the family appear to be quite prominent in the area and so records may exist - Have you tried putting Ann Rankin into a free search of Testaments on the Scotland's People website. If the family were fairly wealthy then she may very well have left a will and the good thing about Scottish records is that women were listed under both their married and maiden names. Candy - I have been told that the Romanes were linked (at least in family legend) to the border gypsies. I have never come across anything to suggest this in my research but it has always been talked about in the family. I can only presume that the link was via a Romanis marriage - Joseph Romaines to Jane Winter in 1841. The Winter family were notorious in the borders, 3 of the same family being hanged for various crimes - and in the contemporary newspaper reports they were stated to be border gypsies. However, it is a good idea to look at these sites and I will try it - thank you. Thanks everyone for your help and if anyone thinks of anything else please let me know Cheers Mandy Buchanan

Hi Arthur, Were any of your Rankin's in British Columbia? I was looking at a set of pictures that I received of my birthmother's family and there is a John (Johnny) Rankin in two of the pictures. These were taken circa 1932. If you think he might belong to you, I'd be happy to scan and email them to you. Diana Reno, NV S&A <starwall@optusnet.com.au> wrote: G'Day Carmel. Hi Yes please Carmen that would be fantastic - even if it only makes something impossible - that helps all the same. Thank You. Unfortunately yes Derek I have tried to do the BT's - we are lucky that the library here has quite a bit of stuff like that but unfortunately the baptisms and marriages that I need are from just before that and only fragments of the papers exist - very few of which are even guessable. I am lucky in that the family appear to have travelled about quite a bit - they were in Kelso and Lauder and Yetholm. I have one in Kelso in the Lieutenancy book 1799 which is a William Romanis - smith in Kelso (page 129) but he does not appear in any of the other stuff - wish he had been a bit more bolshy then he might have warranted a mention in the tellings off in other parts of the book. I don't know who he is but is most likely connected to the Simon Romanis and Mary Lang or Lamb who are in that area at the time. I have checked the Yetholm parish chest papers that are available in the National Archives Building in Edinburgh and came up with a couple of things which proves that they were about occasionally in that area. I have not had a chance to check the Kelso or Lauder areas yet but have it on my list of things to do. Thanks again for any contributions. Ideas about how to go about things are great, no matter how simple it may seem, I might not have thought of it. Cheers Mandy Buchanan

If that is the case (and I may well be wrong about that), have you checked some of the postings having to do with the romani tribes? There are some people following them...just a thought, which may be discardable, and may be one you've already followed up. Hello Mandy I have the M.I.s for Lauder & there are 7 entries for Romanes & 4 entries for Romanis. I will pass them on to you if you wish Regards Carmel
Mandy, Have you tried to trace them through Bishop Transcripts, the Borer FHS or Northumberland Record office may be able to help you with the BTs and also with possible MI transcripts. An index to Kirknewton Bap, Mar and Bur was produced by Original Indexes and is now available from NDFHS who took over the OI material. It covers 1813- 1839. Hope this helps. HI I was wondering if anyone could help. Me and a couple of other researchers are trying to piece together the Romaines, or Romanis or Romanes family.(So far I have about 35 variants on the name but those are the most common ones) We are stuck at a particular point because some church records were burnt (Kirknewton) and so baptism records which would help us are missing. We haven't given up though and are trying through other methods to try and trace the parents of various different sections of the family. It is a process of elimination really and can be quite frustrating. The family came from all over the borders on both sides although they predominate in certain areas. One of the things I have been told is that there are quite a few Romanis or Romaines burials and monumental inscriptions in Lauder and I was wondering if anyone had a record of them which would save me a long trip up there to have a look. Also, if anyone is researching that name, then I have an enormous database and 6 or 7 files full of stuff that I have accumulated over the years referring to the name and would be more than willing to share it with anyone. Thanks very much for your help Mandy Buchanan

I wonder if some kind researcher could help me to find the birth and/or marriage and/or death of ANDREW RUTHERFORD in the Jedburgh area ? (Birth about 1752 and Marriage about 1750) ANDREW RUTHERFORD and his wife ISOBEL SCOT had children : George b. 2.8.1752 C. 13.9.1752 Walter b.5.7.1754 C. 14.7.1754 Andrew b. 29.3.1757 C. 10.4.1757 Robert b. 11.2.1760 Thomas b. 10.12.1763 C. 19.12.1763 All these were found on the Film No. 559522 Associate Session Congregation, Jedburgh. All the children were listed as being born at Hundhaughlee, Jedburgh except the first child George. For him it just gave Birth and Christening then Associate Session Congregation. I would be very grateful for any help or if someone could suggest where I could search to find them, that would be helpful too. Many thanks. Arthur Rutherford Poole, Dorset.
Hi Trish, Hope you don't mind if I jump in here and ask if your Duncan Sinclair had any relatives named James. My gggaunt, Elizabeth Lidgate, married a James Sinclair (b. 1822) in 1862 at Graebridge, Borthwick. He was a powdermaker. Diana Trish Lewis <trishlewis@accesswave.ca> wrote: Hi Arthur. It's Trish Lewis. Don't know if you remember, but you took a couple of photo's of Poolw, Dorset, for me and sent them to me. I was telling you that I think my MacDougall's of Kelso are somehow connected to the Rutherfords. Just wondering, did you see this will on the scotlandspeople site: 8RutherfordAndrew27/10/1828roadmaker, residing at BarnhillsInventory; TestamentJedburgh Sheriff CourtSC62/44/1VIEW (£5.00) (19 pages) http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ Might be worthwhile looking at. 19 pages worth. If not senior, it could be junior, and he may mention family. I've found the wills to be extremely helpful. Sometimes you don't hit the right one, but when you do, wow, the information you get is amazing. My ancestor Duncan Sinclair listed all his children, in-laws, and uncle, and all his grandchildren. Wonderful. It's only five pounds to take the chance Let me know how you make out.
