    1. [BORDER] Isabella LIETCH Birth circa 1784
    2. Eleanor Clouter
    3. I'm still on the track of my LIETCH ancestors! I've gotten to a bit of a dead end looking for documentation on William LIETCH so now I'm researching laterally looking for information about his sister, Isabel/Isabella. Right now I'm looking for her birth circa 1784. Thanks to the list, I just received the 1811 Kelso marriage registry entry for Isabella LEACH to James HARDIE and it stated that her parish was Berwick upon Tweed. Bingo! That's the first documented evidence I have that my LIETCH ancestors had a definite link to Berwick upon Tweed. The marriage register also named an Anne ROSE as witness. I believe that a Kenneth LEICH and a Barbara ROSE may be the parents of Isabella. Now all I have to do is prove (or disprove) it! I was unable to find an IGI entry on the LDS website for an Isabella LEICH/LEACH/LIETCH/LEITCH circa 1784, although there is a promising member submission for a William LEICH circa 1789 which I haven't been able to document to my family. I know from past help on the list that there are births which are not on IGI. How can I search for a circa 1784 birth for an Isabella LIETCH in the area of Berwick upon Tweed? (To date I haven't had a reply from the Berwick Record Office to a separate query I sent them in September.) Thanks for any assistance. Kind regards, Eleanor, Canada

    1. [BORDER] Old Scottish Money
    2. Mandy Buchanan
    3. Hello Is there anyone out there who is either able to translate old Scottish money for me or that knows of a link where it is explained. I have been looking for a will for the time of around 1720 to 1730 and the numbers look very strange - they look like b's I's and j's which I think refers to pounds shillings and pence in that order but I could be completely wrong. Also is there anything on the web that explains how dates were written. There is a word on the will which I cant make out but appears to refer to the dates that things happened as the numbers after this word are clearly indicating dates. It appears to mean 16 but I don't want to assume that. Thanks for your assistance. Regards Mandy Buchanan

    3. It is only the indexes/transcripts to the Scottish Census that are available on Ancestry for 1841, 1851 and 1861. They do not link to an image like the English, US and Canadian ones. The individual transcripts and links to the other family members work just fine for any I have tried. This sample below if for my 3rd great grand Aunt who lived in Ayton Berwick. It may not be images but it is a great start. 1. [BORDER] LIETCH 1851 census and 1811 Marriage
    2. Eleanor Clouter
    3. I just wanted to say a further thank you to Graham, Lesley, Susan and Marion for their additional help regarding Isabella LIETCH's 1811 marriage and her 1851 census record under her married name of HARDY/HARDIE. I've e-mailed the Scottish Borders Archive & Local History Centre at Selkirk for a copy of the microfilm record of the LEACH/HARDY 1811 marriage. Hopefully it will give me some helpful info. Alas, it turns out that the promising 1851 census entry that Graham so kindly found has proven to belong to a different Isabel HARDIE. The 1851 Isabella's maiden name was RIDDELL and her husband, James, was still alive in the 1841 census. My Isabella HARDY nee LIETCH was already a widow in 1841. As I said to Graham, even negative results can help to move research forward because they eliminate some of the possibilities! I'll keep forging ahead and hopefully one day I'll get lucky and make a break-through. Again, many thanks for your help. Kind regards, Eleanor

A team from Newcastle University is looking for people with 'Border Reivers' surnames to donate blood to find out if names signal genetic make-up. The Reivers were clans who fought bloody confrontations with each other from the 13th.century onwards. 1. [BORDER] Isabel HARDY - 1851 Census
    2. Eleanor Clouter
    3. I have been unable to find Isabel HARDY on the 1851 census and hope that someone on the list has access to 1851 census records for the border area and may be able to spot her. In 1841 Isabel/Isabella HARDY was enumerated as a 62 year old widow living with her brother, William LIETCH, in North Shields. She gives her place of birth as Northumberland although William says he was born in Scotland. In the 1851 census she isn't enumerated with William LIETCH in North Shields although she died at William's home in 1852 after a prolonged illness. I'm hoping that she may have been visiting with other family members during the 1851 census, perhaps in Scotland. She was married in Kelso in 1811 and perhaps still had family there? There may also be a connection to Greenses, Etal and Berwick Upon Tweed. Thank you, Eleanor Clouter, Canada
