    3. I have an Isabella Johnson born abt 1821 in Teviotfield, Northumberland on the 1861 census and Westmoreland on the 1871 census. I have not been able to find a Teviotfield. Her father is listed as John Johnson on her marriage license in 1844 to Thomas Stanistreet in the parish of Eccles, Lancashire. Have looked for her as single on the 1841 census and found several servant girls in the pendleton, Lancashire area abt her age but can not pinpoint one as my Isabella. If you have a Johnson data base could you look for an Isabella dau of John born in Teviotfield abt 1821 that went to Pendleton, Lancashire by 1844. Gordon Johnson <gordon@kinhelp.co.uk> wrote: Alistair pointed out that the OPRs only covered Church of Scotland and that there were records of other faiths. True as far as it goes, Alistair, but the period in question was the 17th century, and at that time it was C. of S. or nothing! Catholics were to be found only in the Highlands and Islands with very few surviving records until the 1800s. Similarly, early Episcopal records were mainly taken over by the Church of Scotland in 1689, and don't resume until the 18th century. The Congregationalists start in 1794, and the Baptists at a similar period. There were Quakers, but mainly in Aberdeenshire, in the 18th century. The Reformation led to All or nearly all Roman Catholic records being destroyed in the 16th century, and all that exists now is what survived in the Papal Archives in Rome, some of which has been published by the Scottish History Society, but this mainly refers to priests, and the upper classes making supplications to Rome, and mostly 14th/15th century. True. But the OPR index is derived from the records of a a single faith, the Church of Scotland. NAS and some other archives hold records of other faiths eg Catholic, Baptist, Episcopal etc. My family in days past switched churches occasionally. I blame the ladies! ;~) The Chirnside records for <Reformed Presbyterians> are with Nat Archives Scotland. These cover BDMs. As of year 1983 the collection only ranged 1843- 1860. Maybe it is now more extensive? In passing, I note that Dalbeattie KKD Episcopal records from 1745 were with the Minister as at 1983. But now?????? Alistair

    3. Re: JOHN LITTLE, LYTTLE, LYTLE (b. 1822, Alfred, Upper Canada) I need list members' help in reading some wording on a silver medallion dated 1733 that has been in my Little/Lyttle/Lytle family for a long, long time. Good Eyes Required :) There are some words etched on the coin (other than it's own minted wording) that I cannot read. I think this may be partly due to the fact that the names/places are not familiar to me. I am hoping someone will be able to give me some direction re. where in Ireland or Scotland my SCOT-IRISH or ULSTER SCOT great-grandfather's family came from prior to arriving in Prescott (Alfred) and Renfrew (Westmeath and Pembroke) Counties, ONT Canada, in the early 1800's. (He left Canada for the state of Wisconsin in the US about 1850'ish, where he died in 1896 in LaCrosse County.) The URL below will take you to the website of a cousin who has consented to let me use her website for this rather large file. http://users.ecenet.com/wdcopper/medallion.html - "The Medallion Mystery" (Click on the image on this page and wait a bit. A larger and fairly clear picture of the coin will appear.) F11 will also enlarge it further. It is not a perfect image--neither is the original. I would appreciate anyone's help in reading the words etched on this silver medallion--and any historical perspective as well, if you have it. Many thanks to anyone who can help. 2. By Dan Caterinicchia, The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Anyone interested in finding out who the FBI was investigating before it became the FBI or seeing the works of noted Civil War photographer Mathew Brady will soon be able to do so digitally. Footnote already has digitized 4.5 million pages of historical records and recently signed an agreement with the National Archives to digitize millions more. Initially, subscriptions cost $99.95 annually, $9.95 monthly or $1.99 per image through Footnote's website. Digitized materials will be available for free by Feb. 6 at two facilities in the Washington area and at regional locations in 11 states, according to Archives' spokeswoman Laura Diachenko. After five years, all images digitized through the agreement will be available for free on the National Archives website. Footnote, based in Lindon, Utah, already has posted Brady's photographs and Bureau of Investigation case files from 1908 through 1922, when it was tasked with investigating violations of national banking, bankruptcy, naturalization, antitrust and land fraud laws. When the nation entered World War I in 1917, the bureau acquired additional espionage and sabotage responsibilities. It did not officially become the FBI until 1935. The next batch of materials to be brought into the Digital Age will be the Archives' sizable collection of materials currently on microfilm, according to the agency. But the agreement with Footnote is "non-exclusive," which means the Archives can make similar deals with other companies, like it did recently with Google to digitize some films, Diachenko said. 1. [BORDER] Scotland FreeREG Project Update...
    2. Dale Utterson
    3. Hi Everybody, Now we are into the New Year I thought it was time for an update on the FreeREG project at www.freereg.org.uk The system is now live and the first records are available for searching, although there is only a small amount of data on there at the moment. FreeREG is a sister project to FreeCEN & FreeBMD, but aims to put all the OPRs online - eventually. As you can imagine, it is a huge project and will take a long time to do. I am the County Coordinator for Berwickshire and have all of the films available for distribution to interested volunteers to transcribe. If your Family History research is in one particular area or parish, then why not volunteer to transcribe that area for FreeREG and get the FULL details for your family from the original registers. All you need is to have, or have access to, a microfiche reader (the film is cut up into strips) - and we use a Windows program called WinREG to enter the data into. Unfortunately we cannot have cds for this project. WHY SHOULD I VOLUNTEER? ======================= I'm not sure if you are all aware, but in a LOT of parishes on the IGI only the female Baptisms have been recorded! Ever wondered why you couldn't find an entry for one of your male ancestors - now you know why. Now is your chance to find those missing records! From personal experience I have found during transcription that there are possibly extra details available - Fathers Residence, Fathers Occupation, Witnesses names etc. What you really get out of it is the tremendous satisfaction that you are helping future generations of people researching their family history to find their ancestors more easily than we can now. That just about sums it up. This transcription will have far more information in it than is available at present on the IGI. If you are at all interested you can contact us via the above website or write to me, Dale Utterson, (Berwickshire Co-ordinator) at dale@utterson.com for more information. Best regards Dale Utterson Derbyshire, UK Berwickshire County Coordinator FreeREG Project - Free Internet searches of Baptism, Marriage & Burial records pre 1855 http://www.freereg.org.uk
