    2. Marjorie White
    3. Hi List: I have just found my GGG Grandparents, Thomas Knox and his wife Elspath Kyle in the Greenlaw MI Book. Would the Greenlaw Church hold Baptism records of their Children, Alexander b: 1801or1809, Janet b: 1806 and John b: 1796 ? Alexander Knox married Jane Henderson February 12, 1832 in Westruther and moved to Canada. Where could I find their Marriage Certificate? Would also love to hear from others researching the families of Alexander Kyle, Janet Forsyth and Margaret Trotter who married John Knox. Any information on these families will be greatly appreciated. Marjorie White Ontario, Canada

    1. Liddles
    2. I am starting to research the Liddle family. The family story is they came from the border of England and Scotland. My mother remembered seeing in an old book a place named Liddesdale and a river called the Liddle River. My mother's family is all around Buffalo, New York. Any leads? The Liddles came over about 6 generations ago. I would appreciate any web address for information, also.

    2. Shearies
    3. I am searching for Samuel Robertson born 13 Sept 1749 Father David Robertson @ Kelso, Roxburgh... Im hoping someone can look this up for me and tell me something about this family... I would like to know if there were other siblings and the mothers name?... I really do not know anything about Scotland as I am a Native of California, USA. My 6th Great Grandfather (Samuel) came from Scotland (with his brother William) to the USA in ca 1769 when he arrived he and his wife Elizabeth (Harris) gave birth to a son Named David.... Im hoping that this is him in Roxburgh......... PLEASE HELP!! This info I was given by someone who found a famous Diary Interview of 'Kentucky's Early Settlers' done by Samuel's Grandson in 1898. This is all that he says about Samuel in the Interview: (This is a interview given by David Columbus Robertsons son Allen E. Robertson, 1898 Clay Co. Kty. .......... My father was born at or near mouth of Dan River, VA, at a little town called Moraviantown. His name was David ROBERTSON; he died in Clay County KY 18 Or 20 of June 1872 or 73 age 103 and from Feb to June. HIS father was Samuel ROBERTSON. He was born in the Highlands of Scotland. His wife, Elizabeth HARRIS. His brother William came over with him. I do not know when they came nor whether either was married when they came, though I think, they were. My grandfather left Moraviantown and settled two miles southeast of Richmond, KY where the water works now are, in 1777. 1 have heard my father say it was two years after BOONE went into the Fort at Boonesborough. Col. ESTILL settled near him about the same time, I think the same year. ...) This is all I have on Samuel. I have checked Scots Orgin and came up with nothing. I checked the IGI at LDS and came up with this one Samuel being born in Roxburgh with a father named David which I stated above..... This could be MY Samuel.... ??? What do you think???? HELP???? CATHERINE SCOTT born c. 1842, Carham, Northumberland m. 18/2/1867, South Sunderland Children: Ellen Tinlin, born 1868, Sunderland Charles Tinlin, born 2/3/1869, Kelso Thomas Tinlin, born 29/6/1870, Kelso Catherine Tinlin, born 26/4/1872, Kelso Margaret Tinlin, born 1876, Newcastle James Tinlin, born 1879, Newcastle Archibald Tinlin, born 1882, Newcastle Joan Tinlin, born 1885, Newcastle I have no knowledge of James' origins, except that he was born in Kelso according to the 1871 census for Kelso. I suppose the next step would be to look for the 1861 census for Kelso to see if I can find him on that. He would then be about 18, and presumably living with his parents. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice you may have to offer. Chris Alexander

    3. Peggy, Do you want the certificates, or just the information? FHCs & major public libraries in Ontario have the Ontario Vital Records Index on film from 1869 to 1900 plus. This gives you a number which leads to the filmed records at the Ontario Archives. Where are you located? Joan Main, Richmond Hill On CA

    3. Hello If you want a copy of a BMD registration document, write to the : Office of the Registrar General, P.O. Box 4600, 189 red River Road, Thunder Bay, Ontario P7B 6LB. Phone # 416 325 1838 They charge $15.00 CDN for a (2.5 x 3.75) certificate. A certified photostatic copy of a registration (8 x 14) is $22.00 CDN. A five year search (letter format) is $15.00 . Phone or mail them to get an application form and go from there. The above information I copied from a 1994 fee schedule. I phoned them to try and get the latest fee schedule but all I got was an answering M/C menu ( you can phone and leave your address and they will mail you an application form). I was thinking if you want to save a long distance phone call, send me you mailing address . I will phone them from here and leave your address. The Ontario Archives in Toronto has copies of the BMDs on film but they do not do research or copying. Meaning you would haveto hire someone. 1. Canadian Gen Resources
    2. murray
    3. Hello list, I've bookmarked a number of Canadian gen sites, listed below, which may be useful. Canadian census taking began in 1851, but there were local and partial census reports before then. I believe that Canada did not require passenger lists for inbound ships before 1865, though occasioanlly you can find lists before that date. One exception is the "Peter Robinson" settlers, a sponsored immigration scheme which is very well documented-see below. The ISTG (Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild) at Rootsweb may be able to help with passenger lists, though that project is still in its early stages. Many of the sites below relate specifically to Ontario, where the majority of Irish emigrants ended up, but the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia should also not be overlooked. National Archives of Canada: http://www.archives.ca/00/00_e.html#top The 1871 Ontario Census Index (heads of households and strays only) is part of this site, specifically http://www.archives.ca/exec/naweb.dll?fs&020108&e&top&0 and use the Serch the Database link. It will return a list of names, ages, birthplaces and area of residence. If you then click on the "A" beside the name, you get a bit more info, including the microfilm reel number and page reference for the 1871 Census. The 1871 Census was chosen in part for its relative accuracy and completeness compared to earlier census reports, and also because it represented a high water mark in Ontario's settlement. By 1871, virtually all of the good farmland had been taken up in Ontario, and the next generation often went west to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa or the Dakotas in search of land. With the opening of the Canadian west after completion of the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, it was possible for settlers from Ontario (and the US) to move to the Canadian prairies, and many did. I understand that there are no Canadian records for immigrants from the US prior to 1908, but I don't know when the US began recording border crossings from Canda. Some sites with links: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/canada.html http://www.50megs.com/luke/index.html (Note especially any references to Lanark, Carleton, Peterborough or Russell counties, all of which had heavy Irish settlement before 1850.) Additional Lanark County sites: Lanark County Gen Society: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/LCGS/index.htm Lanark lookups http://www.ott.igs.net/~mcroft/lanark/lookup.htm Ontario Gen Web: http://www.multiboard.com/~spettit/ongenweb/ Ontario maps and place locator: http://www.rootsweb.com/~canon/locator/index.html http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/4051/ http://www.islandnet.com/~jveinot/cghl/cghl.html http://directory.netscape.com/Society/Genealogy/Organizations/Canada http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/canada.html And another. Also, note the "Cindi's List" for other links. http://www.king.igs.net/~bdmlhm/cangenealogy.html Ontario Gen Society: OGS is an umbrella organization with local branches, and does a lot of publications. http://www.ogs.on.ca/ Here's a specifically Irish-Canadian site http://members.tripod.com/~firstlight_2/irishcdn.htm Rootsweb lists-here's all the Canadian Rootsweb lists: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/#canada Here's the OCFA (Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid) site, but note only version 5 is searchable on-line. Version 6 is not. You may need a computer guy/gal to help download them to spreadsheet format so you can combine the 2 versions. There are some duplications between 5 and 6. Note that not all Ontario MI's are here, as the data is contributed by local gen organizations, not all of which wish to participate. http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/ Ontario maps are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~canon/locator/maps.html Ontario "Locator" To quote from the introduction, "all listings are created on the assumption that visitors have no idea where the town/village they are looking for is located in Ontario. By giving the name of a township & county, it narrows the search down considerably. 3. Hi Douglas, I forgot to answer your question in my previous message... There is a "Catalog of catholic immigrants from the British Isles before 1825" that lists people arriving from both Scotland, Ireland and England who are mentioned in catholic parish registers of Quebec. Since most ships arriving from Europe disembarqued in Quebec City or Montreal before going to Upper Canada, it may be of some help, if you are lucky... The book is written by Normand Robert and Michel Thibault (it is a french/english bilingual edition) and is available from de Societe de Genealogie Canadienne-francaise (French-canadian gen. society) in Montreal. 3. To Nancy Gray: My ancestors, the STOTT family, lived in Roxburghshire. They emigrated to the USA in 1818 from the port of Leith, now a part of Edinburgh. They also settled in Andes, Delaware Co., New York. I'm not sure which USA port they entered, but I'd guess Philadelphia or NY. You are fortunate that your family moved to Delaware Co. as volunteers have created a fantastic genealogical web site for the county: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nydelawa/ I've spent many hours researching in that site. I hope you find your families too. -- Mary C.
