Hello All Am searching for William BLACK born about 1784 and/or Elizabeth WILSON born about 1791. He was a shepherd and lived a large portion of his life in Northumberland. They had 7 children born in Northumberland and christened in the Presbyterian Church. All records say they were both born in Scotland. A poorly written clue in the 1871 census gives his birthplace as possibly FROGDEN , SCOTLAND. or WOODEN , SCOTLAND. Would anyone be able to give some help??? Parish records ? I would be forever grateful!!! Dorothy in the Canadian Rockies
Hi Valerie I was interested in the CHISHOLMS you listed. I have two separate CHISHOLM families in the same areas and yours appear to be a further group. My first batch descend from William c. Ashkirk ROX 24/11/1713 =Jane DOUGLAS 14/12/1733 Galashiels Earlier info is v. tentative. The second descend from Walter b. Westruther BER 14/4/1787=Alison ROBERTSON 2/7/1815 Their numerous progeny were around the parishes you mention but so far I have made no links with your names. Would you like to give the ancesters of your group so that we can check out for any common forebears?? best wishes Doug & Kit Leitch Solihull UK -----Original Message----- From: Valerie/Rowan Henshaw <henshawv@ocean.com.au> To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: 21 April 2000 07:58 Subject: Help with Berwickshire place names please

Hi Valerie, SinclairsHill still exists, it is a village and farm on the B6460 to the NNW of Swinton, consists of about 20 cottages and a large farmhouse. Millerstain Row of Cottages should probably be Mellerstain as that is the name of a big house just to the east of Earlston. In the 1881 Census there was a Park Farm in/near Earlston, presumably where the hinds cottage was. In the 1881 census, there were a 1, 2 and 3 Dove Cot. In the 1881 census there is a Mungo Walls Farm House, cottar houses and shepherds house, so it was a farm. Byrewalls was a farm of 562 acres employing 6 men. Birkenside was a farm of 868 acres employing 12 men. I hope that helps, the above was taken from an address search of the 1881 census, so I do not know which apart from SinclairsHill still exist, but Birkenside and MungoWalls sound familiar. I am looking for any information regarding Rachel EASTON. All I know of her is that she was married to Andrew PRINGLE June 17, 1791 in Newstead Melrose Roxburgh. Andrew and Rachel had five children-- William (b. 1792), Robert (b. 1795), Helen (b. 1799), Andrew (b. 1801) and Thomas (b. 1808). According to one of the records on Rachel and Andrews marriage which I located aon the LDS site, there was a relative named George Easton. I would appreciate any information about Rachel's birthdate, her parents or any siblings if know. Thank you in advance any information. Peggy

Dave and Nancy and all, Steve Bulmans site (http://www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk/cumbria/images) does not have a picture of Kirklinton church but has some really nice ones of Arthuret, Rockcliffe, St. Cuthberts in Carlisle, etc. Whatsup with Kirklinton! I cannot find monument inscriptions for Kirklinton parish either. I wonder why it is overlooked. Still sorting out Grahams................ Delia
WILLIAM TELFER married Janet Nichol in Oxnam, Roxburgh in 1793. Their children were: Nelly, 1793, Christian 1796, Andrew 1798, William 1802, George, 1804, Jean 1806, Mary, Betsy, and Thomas. Andrew and William came to Australia in 1825 to work for the Australian Agricultural Company. It is believed William (married to Janet Nichol) may have had siblings, George, Thomas, James, Tibby, Betsy and John. Would anyone have any connection or information re the above. And could someone tell me what Tibby is short for. Lyndall

Hi Marjorie, Whilst I can't help directly with any Greenlaw Baptisms perhaps you could try the Scots Origins website. It does cost (£6.00UK for 20 look-ups and a further £10.00UK if you order a certificate directly from them but they are very efficient) I have used the site a few times and have received the correct certificates every time. Their website address is http://www.origins.net/GRO/ Regards, Yvette Hope
H Dorothy et al, Yes Glaswegian is the usual term for someone from Glasgow, some people, particularly from the East may call them "Weegies". As far as Edinburgh is concerned, there isn't really a term in common use. I certainly wouldn't refer to myself as an "Edinburgher" for example. I know that in the 19th century there were a lot of "native names" usually based on the Latin form for the town name - which is where Glaswegian comes from, so there may have been something at some time, but I don't think it is used much these days. regards Caroline Stavert Edinburgh. -----Original Message----- From: Dorothy Blunden <blunden@rockies.net> To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: 20 April 2000 04:55 Subject: Native Name >Hello All >A question has arisen which I hope someone will be able to answer for me..... >I know a person from Glasgow is called a Glasswegian.. I am a 3rd generation born Canadian "Holmes" with ancestry documented back to Thomas Holmes born July 29, 1804 and died at Alston June 15, 1871. He married Jane Walton at Alston May 27 1826. She was born December 14, 1804 daughter of John Walton born 1767. Thomas & Jane had 11 children, the eldest being Jonathan born Alston Nov 19, 1826, immigrated to Canada, I don't know when, and died at Dunbarton Ontario May 19, 1890. I am looking for parents of Thomas, I believe to be Richard Holmes born approx.1760 who married Elizabeth Slack in 1790. Also family prior to them. Any kind soul who has information on the family prior to 1804 I would appreciate hearing .

Hello everyone, Some time ago I started a one-name study of the COSSAR and CROSSER surname (including COSSER, COSSOR, CROSSAR and CROSSOR) and am seeking references all around the world, in all time periods. The surname seems to have originated in the Scottish borders, although there are several lines (including my own) springing from Lanarkshire. Descendants of these Lanarkshire lines today live in New Zealand, Canada, USA and London England. Descendants of Berwickshire lines are similarly widespread. I have many Scottish trees in my records as well as quite a few English "bushes." I would be very pleased to exchange information. I am a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies. If you have a COSS*R or CROSS*R connection, however distant or remote, I would love to hear from you. regards, Ann COSSAR London England cossar@one-name.org http://www.cossar.org.uk from Ann Cossar acossar@cossarlind.win-uk.net

Wondering if in your search for your DAVIDSONS you have come across William DAVIDSON, whose dau. Mary married 1773 William PRINGLE. They are buried at Lempitlaw, a small village between Oxnam and Kelso. Ruth Curtis, Washington state USA
