Hi Could someone please enlighten me to the occupation of "Writer to the Signet". I seem to have quite a few of these in my tree. TIA Meg (Sydney)
Hi Would anyone be able to give me any info regarding ROMANNO TOWER. This tower was supposedly owned by my border ROMANES ancestors. I have only seen one reference to it (on the web) and would like to know where in the borders it is/was located. Ancestors were mainly from Roxburgh but it could have been anywhere in the lowlands. I'm taking my long awaited trip to Scotland on 6th May and would like to visit the tower or its past location TIA Meg (Sydney)
Thanks for your help Monica, We are staying in Peebles on Friday night and we can get there OK by bus. We are looking for something in Selkirk or Galashiels on Saturday night, there are a few weddings that night and the hotels we have called are full. Sunday night is OK there are vacancies everywhere. Another Border History Book would be: The Border - from a soldier's point of view William Sitwell Andrew Reid and Co Newcastle upon Tyne 1927 A second handbook store is probably where you would find this one Alastair Pringle
My g. grandfather William Turner ARNOTT was killed 29 June 1900 at the age of 34 during construction of the dam for Talla Reservoir, one of Edinburghs sources of water - hence my post to both MLN and BORDER. The official extract of his death records that he was crushed by an engine which slipped as it was being lifted on to rails near Stanhope Bridge in the united Parish of Kilbucko, Broughton and Glenholm My understanding is that a small-gauge railway was used in the construction of the earthen dam that formed the Talla Reservoir and it is on this railway that he met his accidental death. My questions to the List Members are: 1. Are there any publication(s) covering the history of the Tala Water Works Construction and where can I purchase them? 2. where can I confirm the site of my g. grandfathers burial? There is a grave stone which I saw in Tweedsmuir Cemetery (Sept/88 - long before I became seriously interested with genealogy!) whose inscription reads: To the memory of the men who died during the progress of the TALLA WATER WORKS 1895-1905 of whom over thirty are interred in this churchyard Erected by their fellow-workmen and others However, there is another gravestone in Cockpen, Churchyard MLN Space no. 56, Section F whose inscription reads In Loving Memory of William T. Arnott also his wife Alison Somerville also their daughter Harriet and their grand-daughter Alison Also their sons George died 11th June 1954 John died 4th Feb. 1959 However, the Cockpen grave site was purchased 1 Nov. 1921 by William ARNOTTs wife. Can I conclude with reasonable certainty that William is buried in the mass grave at Tweedsmuir, or could his remains have been moved to Cockpen at a later date? If so, where would I find this out? I look forward to your input! Jim Arnott Victoria, BC
This is quite surprising as I have been told that there is no rail service to Selkirk anymore. Is this new? No mention of a tower, but the Borders are full of old pele towers and the ruins thereof, so there might be something in the area. Hi Anne, >I've seen Bathia, but not Bethia. Are they variants of each other? I believe so, and would expect Bethea is another one (re John's question). I've only ever seen the name very very rarely though. Checking in Donald Whyte's "Scottish Forenames" book (Birlinn, 1996) I see this name appears to be a biblical one, appearing in Scotland from at least the 16th century. Best wishes. Viv

This was the year that they began certificates and they went a bit wild and asked for all sorts of info that was never included again. If you're lucky, it will tell you siblings, it may even say where he was baptised. Only baptisms of the Church of Scotland are in the iGI, if they were anything else, they won't be. Also, try the 1851 census for Langholm. He should be there as a small child, and the census should give you the parish. What an unhelpful person you are Mr Joe Boyd Williams. I can only assume that it was a feeble attempt at humour. The train service to the borders was axed in the 60's and is a bone of contention to everyone living in the Borders. Buses, and not very good ones, are the only form of public transport available to the 100,000 of us who live here. We have to drive many miles to take a train, well over an hours car drive for almost all of us; it also takes a lot longer by bus. Then again, living in Katy Texas you are probably an expert in public transport. In answer to the original request there is currently no web site that provides information on buses, one is planned according to the Scottish Borders Tourist Board. Trying to find a phone number is a nightmare!! And they wonder why visitor numbers to the Borders are showing little or no growth. -- Best Wishes Richard
You have to take into account that sometimes diminutives or nicknames were used in place of the "real" given names to the point where those replaced the original name. In our family, Iantha (a classical name) turned into Jantha, then Janthy. By the time my twin great uncle & aunt were born their ancestral names -- Benjamin and Elizabeth -- had become Benny and Betty. Nearly all the Sarahs were called "Sally or Sallie", and the Marys "Molly" until finally the nicknames became the given names. Have you heard of a similar name Bethea? It seems like it might be a variation. I'm curious because I have an Bethea Jane Spray (1831 - 1922 ) I'm trying to track down. She was born in the USA, but if her name is a Scottish forname, her parents might have come from Scotland. Thanks, I'm curious to know any more about this name. MARRIAGE NAME: HEPPLE, THOMAS or GEORGE OF NORTHUMBERLAND, HEPPLEHAUGH STEELE, ELIZABETH OF SCOTLAND DATE: CA. 1830 THEY LIVED IN HEPPLEHAUGH, NORTHUMBERLAND. SHE WAS BORN SCOTLAND.
I am looking for MARY NICOL who would have been 17 in 1851. I know she was born in Langholm but I think she was working as a servant in Ewes or Langholm. I know she was not at home with her parents and where she was in 1851 may help to solve the mystery of her illegitimate son. Any info welcome. Thanks Evelyn Boland
Anyone missing a Peter PATERSON aged 32 in 1901? Have his marriage details from 2nd July at Galashiels if anyone interested. Lists his address as Spittal. Regards. Eileen
Hello Elizabeth TAYLOR died 1885 at Galashiels and her parents are listed as John Gray and Margaret SYMINGTON. John was an "Engineer (Fireman)". Elizabeth was born at Greenlaw, BEW. While I have a few possibilites for Gray I have no SYMINGTON leads. Anyone out there looking for this name in the Borders? Best wishes, Eileen
