Dear Listers, I have just found an incredible London map site. I know that not everybody has connections with London but this site is really worth looking at for those that have plus those that like modern internet technology.. You can select a map from the years 1827, 1859 or 1889 and just zoom in on any desired area. You can even print out your selection. http://www.ph.ucla.edu/epi/snow/1859map/map1859.html Just try it, Best wishes from, Michael.
Greetings again, Can anyone tell me if Sington, Roxburgh is the same place as Singdean? I couldn't find a Sington on any current map. thanks, Peggy
Lynda What you need are a few good history books about the Borders. For starters "The Steel Bonnets" the story of to the Anglo Scottish Border Reivers by George MacDonald Fraser as easy reading and explains some of the early history. Also bear in mind the constant battle between the Scots and English and the Border Country was right in the path of these apposing forces. Cromwell also did a lot of damage, at least his soldiers did Alison in Calgary At 11:54 AM 02/05/00 -0400, you wrote: >I'm sorry. Greetings all, Can anyone tell me what parish (s) Sington and Castleton, Roxburgh are/were in? I have some Scotts that were born in both; in the 1700 & 1800's. thanks, Peggy
Not sure about Sington, but I do know that Singdean (or Singden) was a farm in the parish of Castleton. In the 1st half of the 19th century, a Walter Scott (m. Elspeth Telfer) was shepherd there. A short biography of Walter is included in a book by George Tancred, _Rulewater and its People_ (1904, but reprinted recently by the borders FHS). Hello Borders folks, Does anyone know the location of Balnagowan, probably and estate rather than a town. It was (is?) the home of the Ross' who intermarried with the Lockharts Thanks Bill Copeland for Tom Lockhart
I'm sorry. I guess my message was unclear...I was more interested in what unfortunate things happened to the border peoples, rather than records. I had asked a question about a surname, and the response referred to records not being readily available in the borders area because of the unfortunate things that transpired there over time. Can anyone explain? Thank you in advance... Hi Monica and Ian, I'm back. There are no trains, but the Borders are full of talk about the construction of replacement railway lines by 2005. Does anyone think they will be laid? There are still traces of the old routes and their removal must have hurt the area under discussion very much. Hello Listers, Was wondering if anyone could help me. I have been going through the LDS microfilm for Eyemouth OPRs marriages and baptisms, and have couple of queries. Firstly, the surname I am researching is Landels / Landles and @the mid 1700s, I get the impression that this surname has been abbreviated. The script is difficult in places, but on numerous occasions, I`ve seen what looks like Lles as the surname. Is it possible that a surname could be abbreviated in this way? Secondly, I have also come across a Landels marriage record, which says that the couple were regularly proclaimed on such and such a date and thereafter married. They had been clandestinely married the previous year "at the Union Bridge"???? Does anyone have any ideas re this last statement. I also found other couples who had been clandestinely married. Grateful for any opinions. Nick.
This is my first attempt at researching my Scottish ancestry, and I have already gotten a response that I don't understand...can anyone please excuse my lack of knowledge of Scottish history and explain to me what sort of unfortunate things transpired in the Borders region that would have affected records being kept, etc.? I am desperately searching for any info on Robert Dodds Scott, b. 1803 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire...married Dinah Edwards in Wales...and died as owner of the Crown Inn in Nelson, Wales. Any bells ringing? Eagerly awaiting your response... I would be interested to hear from anyone connected with the following family who lived in Berwickshire and East Lothian. Parents: James BALD (b.circa 1836 - d.1878) & Selby Ord Dodds BROWN (b.1839 - d. 21 Oct 1905) Children: Margaret (16 Feb 1863 - 1915) Adam* (28 Mar 1865 - Sep 1940) & Isabella Bald Adam* (28 Mar 1865 - Sep 1940) & Eleanor Reay, formerly Gascoigne (1873 - Jun 1959) Alexander (30 Jan 1867 - ) John (13 Nov 1868 - ) Helen (19 May 1870 - ) James (2 Apr 1872 - ) Selby Orr Dodds Brown (29 Mar 1874 - Before 1881) Jessie (Circa 1877 - ) Betsy (Circa 1879 - ) Bronwyn (Australia) bjzrna@bigpond.com
I have received two emails from a Robert Allen asking for help designing a web page. I have tried four times to respond to his message and the message is returned to me from the system administrator with a "recipient not recognized" message. I don't know where Robert found me but I am taking a chance that he belongs to one of the lists that I subscribe to. If you get this, the email address that is on your message doesn't work. Hi All I need some advice from someone with more experience. My gggrandfather, George Tweedie Anderson, on his marriage certificate in 1865 (in Australia) gives his parents as Walter Anderson and Euphemia King. He gives his birthplace as Cramilt (a farm in Megget) in Peeblesshire and age as 27. I can find IGI births for older and a younger sibling but not George. In the 1841 census when he would be about 3 he is not home but older and his younger sibling are home. In the 1851 census 2 older brothers are home but George is missing as is his younger sister. I have not checked Scots Origins for his birth. Might it show up there? Any ideas what I do now? I have considered adoption but if he was adopted after 1851 he would surely know who his parents where. Any suggestions? I have also been unable to locate his death place which I assume was Australia. I have a copy of Peebles MIs and none of the family seem to be shown and I assume the family could afford headstones. There appears to be a connection with Moffat but would it be practical to take a body that distance for burial? Would that be unusual? I often consider collecting coins would be easier but once the bug bites ==. Thanks George in Western Australia
I am researching my great great grandparents Simon and Charlotte Sinclair who were born in Glendevon and married at Walkerburn in1867. They had two girls before coming to New Zealand in 1878 to work in the Mosgiel Woollen Mills. Is there anyone else also researching the same family or anyone who has any connection who may be able to help.I am specially interested as many of the boys of following generations including my fathers three brothers, suffered from haemophilaia and as it is passed through the female of the line I wondered if there was mention of it occuring in their generation also.
