I agree. Many times I have wondered about an answer, but never heard one. Hi List Just something to ponder about, If you ask a question, and someone answers privately, not to the list, it would be courteous to reply to the sender or even to the list that they received the answer, Otherwise the sender does not know if it is still flying around in Cyberspace. and then questions will never be answered Max
Max, Thanks for the email. I really believe it would be nice for the answers to all come through the list. My GG,Grandparents I don't know what happen to them. Dear George: My mother and her family came from Laughta in Co. Leitrim in Ireland. They were Brooks. In the course of looking through the 1911 Census for Laughta in Dublin, I noted down a few Johnston names as I was trying to track where my great-grandfather might have come from originally, and I was especially intrigued with the name "Glasgow" Johnston. I don't know if these are any help, and the names don't quite match, but you said they did move to Ireland in the early 1900's so maybe these Irish Johnston's might be related somehow. I have only got back as far as 1869 when he married Susannah Ann Stanner Strevens in London. They came to Australia with their son John Henry Strevens SCOTT c 1875 when he was 1 yr old. His death certificate gives his parents names but not place of birth. Carolyn McInnes
I have an ancestor called James Mark who married before going to the colony of New South Wales before 1855. It has taken me some years to find out more about him but I have, at last, got a copy of the death certificate. Although the Australian certificates contain more information than those here, it has not been as helpful as I had hoped. It says that he died aged 73 on 23 January 1883 in Armidale, New South Wales. It further tells me that he was born in Scotland to a father named George and he married his first wife (name unknown) in Scotland. He had two children by that marriage and I suspect they were born in Scotland because I cannot find them registered in NSW. Their names were William (born about 1839) and Isabella (born about 1842). These dates are deduced from their ages as listed on their father's death certificate. Further investigation at the Armidale cemetery has revealed that James was born in Gallashiels. I have checked the Family Search records but no birth there. There is a marriage for a James to a Mary Burges in 1829 at Peebles. This could be correct as a child from a subsequent marriage has the middle name of Burgess but this is sheer supposition (and perhaps you could consider it a bit desperate!). I do not know whether the first wife died before James and the children went to Australia --not knowing her name does not help. Perhaps someone may be able to look at OPR or census returns that may help. Help and advice will be most gratefully received. Many thanks Elizabeth Leicester, UK

Dear Jay W. There is a Joseph Laidlaw, son of James Laidlaw and Mary Farries, baptised 14 June 1835 at Hoddam Dumfrieshire. Perhaps he is your Joseph. The Old Parish Register records are better than the IGI. Margaret

Hi Listers, I am researching my ggggrandfather William Lidgate. He married Anne McDonald December 1809. They had 5 children James, Elizabeth, Duncan (my gggrandfather) Margaret and Isabelle born between 1810 and 1819 in Mertoun, Berwick. I'm trying to find out who William's parents were. Could SKS check census records for William and Anne? Diana Ellison San Diego, CA
Hello everyone, This is my first posting and I am trying to locate my GGGGrandfather Joseph LAIDLAW. I know very little about him so it is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack, but I have to start somewhere and this is it. What I know (from 1881 & 1891Census) is that he was born in Scotland around 1835. From his Marraige Certificate I know that his father was James LAIDLAW who was a Joiner. That is all I have to go on. Could someone be so kind as to tell me where in Scotland a LAIDLAW was most likely to originate from? Am I subscribed to the correct List? I have tried the IGI which revealed no matches for a Joseph LAIDLAW. It did however come up with several possibilities for a James LAIDLAW mostly around Selkirk and Hawick. Hence my subscription to this list. I know it's a long shot but hoping someone can help. Thanks Jay W North Yorks
I Noticed the name ELIZABETH TONER in your listing. Do you have any idea of dates and who she married? I have been looking for my gggrandmother ELIZABETH TONER who married WILLIAM MAXWELL. They came from Armagh, NIR c. 1837 to Quebec, Canada via the Port of Cork in Ireland. Perhaps this is the link I have been looking for. Thanks.
