Hi Claire, Yes this is the correct list for Burnmouth, Berwickshire which is just South of Eyemouth. For your info, there were no JURY or WARE listings for Berwickshire in the 1881 census. Hi. I am looking for ancestors through the 19th.and 20th.cent.in Berwick and earlier in the Burntisland,Fife area. Barbara MITCHELL was from Leitholm nr.Coldstream, Berwickshire circa 1815. Her parents might have been Alex.MITCHELL and Agnes SWAN. James SLIMIN or SLIMING circa 1815 of Burntisland, son of Henderson SLIMING or SLIMMING. Barbara and James married and lived in Berwick until the late 19th.century. Sincerely,Ron Stallard,Canada
I am trying to research the TINLIN family, which I understand originated in Roxburghshire. JAMES TINLIN born c. 1843, Kelso Railway Carter, Wagon Driver m. CATHERINE SCOTT born c. 1842, Carham, Northumberland m. 18/2/1867, South Sunderland Children: Ellen Tinlin, born 1868, Sunderland Charles Tinlin, born 2/3/1869, Kelso Thomas Tinlin, born 29/6/1870, Kelso Catherine Tinlin, born 26/4/1872, Kelso Margaret Tinlin, born 1876, Newcastle James Tinlin, born 1879, Newcastle Archibald Tinlin, born 1882, Newcastle Joan Tinlin, born 1885, Newcastle I have no knowledge of James' origins, except that he was born in Kelso according to the 1871 census for Kelso. I suppose the next step would be to look for the 1861 census for Kelso to see if I can find him on that. He would then be about 18, and presumably living with his parents. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice you may have to offer. Chris Alexander

Visit your local LDS Family History Library and check the 1891 census for Hawick (or log into Scots origins and search there, but with such common names it won't be easy). If you're lucky, Thomas & isabella will be living together, and the census will give you their ages and birth parishes. Alternatively, look for their wedding cert - that'll give their parents and occupations. There's all the addresses, URLs, etc, on GENUKI (don't have the URL here, but it'll turn up easily on one of the search engines). Lesley Robertson
Hello listers. Does anyone have, or have access to, the 1851 census for Berwick Upon Tweed? I'd like to find my Robertson family. William Robertson was my great grandfather, and he would have been about 17 years old in 1851, born there about 1834. My grandfather, James (William's son) had known cousins by the last name of Short from the Tweedmouth area so somewhere there is a conection to them as well. Thanks for any help you can provide. Dawn, southern CA

Hi Nancy, >I just tried to access your page at clara.net, and got a message that it >could NOT be found. I was directed to a list of names of people who had >webpages with clara.net............looked under D for >Dunstan........nothing, then looked under V for >VivDunstan............clicked on your name and did get your page. The >address is: >http://home.clara.net/vivdunstan/ The address I gave (http://www.vivdunstan.clara.net/) should point to and identify exactly the same bit of webspace as the address you've tracked down above. They are equivalent addresses. Both should work. I prefer to give the one I gave because it's easier to remember/type. You didn't try capital letters in my name did you? (e.g. something like http://www.VivDunstan.clara.net/). I just wondered since you used capitals in your letter at one point (e.g. "VivDunstan"). Capitals won't work: like many other webservers the ClaraNET one is case-dependent so treats lower and upper case letters very differently. Anyway that's just a long shot of an idea. You may have tried the exact address. Since I set up the new website I've used the address I gave every time, without spotting any problems (and I'm not always logged into ClaraNET). However if anyone else has problems accessing it (and please make sure that you are trying the correct address: a single letter missing can make all the difference; likewise a letter in capital case instead of small case can cause similar problems) let me know directly, by email. Sorry about this and many thanks Nancy for alerting me to this. Viv
Hi everyone, I'm changing ISP for the first time in several years (and hopefully the last time for several years too!) so my web pages are moving. This affects the Roxburghshire, Berwickshire, Selkirkshire and Peeblesshire county areas of GENUKI (http://www.genuki.org.uk/) as well as the online Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire and East Lothian Surname Lists. Can anyone with bookmarks or links to any of my pages please note the change as well as the new locations? Redirection pages are going in over the next few weeks, but won't be there indefinitely. My pages can always be accessed through the GENUKI hierarchy (start at http://www.genuki.org.uk/ and follow the links down, e.g. to UK&Ireland, then Scotland, then pick the county, e.g. Roxburghshire etc.) GENUKI also links to lots of English Border resource info (e.g. start at http://www.genuki.org.uk/ and follow the links down, e.g. to UK&Ireland, then England, then Northumberland or Cumberland, etc.) Many thanks. Viv Dunstan (home page: http://www.vivdunstan.clara.net/) P.S. The server (www.users.zetnet.co.uk) holding my old web pages is not responding tonight. Its performance is partly why I've changed ISPs :) So if anyone tries to use old bookmarks/links to my old Zetnet pages, they may not work at the moment. But it should be possible to reach the web pages at their new ClaraNET location via the GENUKI hierarchy and/or my home page.
Does anyone have the new "Services of Heirs in Scotland 1700-1859 (Decennial Indexes)" on CD just published by the Scottish Genealogy Society? If so, would some kind soul be willing to look up a "Service of heirs" from the index for "John Patterson" of Eccles, Berwickshire between the period 1730 to 1762? There may be at least (2) John Pattersons listed here, and I am particulary interested in "John Paterson, the younger of Eccles" and "Sir John Paterson, the 3rd Baronet of Eccles". I would be extremely grateful for any help. Hi, Can someone help with the email address of the Borders Archive in Selkirk? And is their web site running yet? Thanks, Judy
Hi Folks, My ancestors were tennants of a mill in Kirkliston, West Lothian in the 1850's and 60's on the estate of the Hogs of New Liston. Although the records are still with the family, the NAS has indexes to them and I was able to identify particular bundles that might have been relevant. In these cases the NAS can either arrange for the records to be brought to Register House to be seen, or as in my case, to arrange an introduction to the family in question. I was invited to New Liston and spent a very pleasant day searching, assisted by the head of the family, in his 80's. Unfortunately, although we found mention of the tenants before and after mine, there was no mention of the Laings! So, ask NAS; they will probably be aware of what exists. Stuart. Listers, I've just obtained a copy of a new book entitled " The Ewes Valley" by Brenda I Morrison and R Bruce McCartney. ISBN0-9517858-1-8 ( price £7.50 sterling). It 's described on the back cover by the Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser as " A great boon to ancestor-chasers in the Ewes Valley". I couldn't have put it better - for example -it includes full details of the MIs for Ewes Churchyard and Unthank Churchyards. The authors are reported to also be working on Memorials of Langholm Parish : Staplegordon and Wauchope Cemeteries. It's on my Christmas list already! Regards, Allan McVittie www.mcvittie.co.uk
