All records of past employees are held at the Scottish Records Office in Edinburgh. Hope this helps you a little. This is a site that I found while browsing. Its not free but it maybe helpful as they have records available on-line. Its called Scottish Origins. http://www.origins.net/GRO/ Sue Atherton Sue Atherton

1. Re: Request Look up Stitchell Hume MI's
2. Diana M. Leitch
3. Trish, I have the MI book for Stichill and Hume. I am afraid there are no HOODs in it or a name which could be similar. My husband is descended from Margaret Robertson who married Robert Leitch c.1795-1800. They both came from Stichill and Hume and are buried at Hume Churchyard. Her parents were Andrew Robertson and Margaret Smail from Hume. I have not been able to trace them as yet but Andrew must have been born about the same time as your Robert. Can you see any connection? The only Robertsons in the Stichill and Hume MI book from roughly the right period are Robert Robertson who died at Hume 19.7.1884 aged 92 years (born c.1792) and Lt Col. Donald Robertson born 14.3.1765 and died 10.2.1824. I have the books for Sprouston and Crailing. There are three other Hood entries other than the one you know about in the Sprouston book. Do you want to know about these? Diana Leitch Manchester, UK Date forwarded: Sun, 28 May 2000 08:06:10 -0700 (PDT) From: "Trish LEWIS" <trishlewis@sprint.ca> Subject: Request Look up Stitchell Hume MI's Date sent: Sun, 28 May 2000 11:29:14 -0300 To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com Forwarded by: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com Hi Does anyone have the MI's to Stitchell & Hume. I was thinking of ordering the book, but if there aren't any ROBERTSON's or HOOD's in it, I think I might wait for a bit. If someone can check to see if there are HOOD's listed there, I would greatly appreciate it. Mary HOOD married Robert ROBERTSON and it said she was from Hume and that Robert was of Crailing. She would have been born approx. 1754. She was buried in Sprouston in 1809, but I'm looking to see if her relations may have been buried in Hume. Thank you. 1. COSSAR - 1861 Census Lookup, Edrom, Bew
2. Arnott, J & H
3. I would appreciate help from SKS out there in locating the birthplace of my g. g. grandfather Robert COSSAR, a tailor by trade.. In the 1881 Census, he was living with his 2nd wife, Isabella DOWNIE and children John, James, Maggie Ann and Robert at 22 Bridge St. in Melrose, Selkirk. In this Census entry he claims to have been born abt. 1821 in Ladykirk Parish, Berwick. However, an exhaustive search of the OPR for Ladykirk could not find an entry for his birth. As directed by other sources of information, I did find births of sons Thomas (18 Apr. 1839) and Robert (29 Oct. 1840) to Robert COSSAR and his 1st wife Isabella ROBERTSON in the OPR of the neighbouring parish of Edrom, Bew. By 1849 Robert and 1st wife Isabella ROBERTSON had moved to Glasgow where they had their 6th and last child, my g. grandmother Isabella Margaret Jane COSSAR b. 18 Nov. 1849 at Glasgow, Lks. (IOPRS Frame 6123). However, I find the prospect of searching the 1851 Glasgow Census a bit daunting! By 1859, RobertÂ’s 1st wife had died and he had a son, Thomas, on July 28th of that year, by his second wife Isabella DOWNIE in Edrom, Bew. So if someone has access to the 1861 Census of that Parish, I would appreciate a Look-up to see if you can find him there, and pass along the information on WHERE HE CLAIMS TO HAVE BEEN BORN. Thanks Jim Arnott Victoria, BC, Canada c:\famtree\mln\26rcoss2.doc

1. Henry and Isabella FAIRLEY at Bowhill
2. Jennifer Familton
3. Is it possible for someone to check the 1881 census for Henry FAIRLEY and/or his wife Isabella Turner FAIRLEY? According to family stories, Henry was a coachman in the employ of the Duke of Buccleuch at Bowhill and Isabella lived in the gatehouse lodge after Henry's death - but I dont have dates for their deaths. Ive ordered the 1851 census as a beginning but would appreciate help from someone with access to the 81 material. Their son William worked for Murray, Roberts and Co after his discharge from the army in 1869. He and his wife Helen Law FAIRLEY and their young children came to NZ but should also feature in the 81 census for Selkirk. Any help would be much appreciated. Jennifer

3. Hi all, I'm new to this list and am hoping someone can help me. I have recently discovered my very elusive g-gfather, John Ronald McKenzie (b 1st Sept 1859 in Fodderty Ross & Cromarty) on the 1881 Census. He is entered as a 22 year old undergardener at the Gardens (Bothy) at Floors Castle. My questions are these...and forgive my ignorance on the first...just what is a Bothy? Secondly, are there any records of Floors Castle available which may help me find out more about John McKenzie? Up until this discovery all I knew of him was that he was born in Fodderty and married in 1884 in Greenock East, Renfrewshire. Look forward to being enlightened. Val in a very cool & windy Brisbane.

3. Good Morning Val As I grew up in a Bothy I do have some info for you on what it is. Webster's Dictionary describes it as " a rude hut or barrack for unmarried farm servants or for labourers in the same employ" and that is what our home originally was built as (although I would not classify it as 'rude'!) It was located on a large estate in southern Scotland, and had originally housed up to 8 garden labourers who worked on the estate gardens. These men were usually single, each had their own room and were looked after by a lady (cook/housekeeper) who had a small 2-room flat adjoining our house. By the time we came to live there (1952), the "good old days" of plentiful cheap labour were over and the house was used just for our family. However, it was an unusual design (as you can imagine) and quite impressive. It had central heating (a luxury in the UK at the time that it was built (~ 1860s)) and was our home for many a year. I haven't looked for genealogically-related records for Floors but the Castle is a huge affair, and home of the Duke of Roxburough (although rather dismal inside -- it is open to the public). My cousins lived across the river on the Springwood Estate just outside Kelso and I was often in the vicinity. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL countryside and worth a visit if you have never been there Good luck in your searching Jim Arnott In Dull, Cool and Showery Victoria, Vancouver Island val mansell wrote: > > Hi all, > I'm new to this list and am hoping someone can help me.
