    1. OLIVER/SMART - Berwick
    2. Bill Pryde
    3. I'm looking for some advice on how to obtain any information available on my great-grandparents, William OLIVER and Margaret SMART. I have approximate dates of birth (1830's) and I know they died after 1906. I have their marriage date and some details on their ten children. According to my information, they are both buried in Coldingham Churchyard in Berwick. What I'm looking for specifically in this instance is any information that might be recorded on any markers that might exist on their graves. Ideally, (and I don't know if these sorts of records are kept) I'd like to know if there is any living person, i.e., a descendant, who has an interest in or responsibility for the graves. Can anyone suggest to whom I might write to obtain such information? Thanks for your help. Bill Pryde Nepean, Ontario, Canada

    3. Hi Viv, Although not one of the Border counties, I have a copy of the MIs for Norham, NBL and only a quarter mile from Ladykirk in Berwickshire. There are quite a lot of Scottish deaths listed on the Norham graves. I am willing to look up specific names for anyone. 3. Hi all, Just a quick question. Is there a list somewhere of the MI's that have been published, (or have been collated) in the Borders area. I am particularly interested in the Hawick, Wilton and Bowden areas, although if there is a list of all MIs available then this would be useful. Thanks, Cameron. Melbourne, Australia.

    3. Hi Cameron, >Just a quick question. Is there a list somewhere of the MI's that have been >published, (or have been collated) in the Borders area. I am particularly >interested in the Hawick, Wilton and Bowden areas, although if there is a list >of all MIs available then this would be useful. Details of published MIs are listed under Cemeteries on the relevant Roxburghshire parish pages in GENUKI, indeed for all of the Scottish Border counties I maintain (Berwickshire and Selkirkshire, and to a lesser caretaking extent Peeblesshire). Where there are county MI collections, these are listed on my Scottish Border county pages (e.g. Berwickshire, Peeblesshire), again under the subject heading Cemeteries. Of course I can only list the MIs that I know about. Should other people learn of or know about other available MIs I'd be grateful if they could let me know so that I can add details to my parish/county pages in GENUKI. This includes details of MIs in local libraries and/or archives: living away from the Borders now I can't find out about these so easily. Finding MIs listed on the pages does not always make it easy to access the lists though. For example with MI lists for the Hawick area (of which there are many: see the Hawick and Wilton parish pages in GENUKI) many are in old issues of the Hawick Archaeological Society's Transactions, not necessarily things that are easy to access outside Scotland. But finding out about the existence of the MIs is a vital first step. Again though look at GENUKI (http://www.genuki.org.uk/) and follow the hierarchy down, e.g. to UK&Ireland (the big map in the centre), then Scotland, then pick your county (e.g. Roxburghshire), then parish (e.g. Hawick) and then look under Cemeteries. The Borders FHS has recently published an MI booklet for Ancrum. I haven't updated the Ancrum parish page in GENUKI yet. I will do soon! Hope this helps! 3. The LDS Family History Catalogue is now available on CD-ROM for sale to home users for US $5. Aus$8. It may be ordered online by visiting http://www.familysearch.org/ then clicking on "Ordering Family History Resources" then "Software Products" then "Personal Ancestral File and Related Products". Or contact your local LDS Distribution Centre This CD-ROM may be a cheaper alternative rather than visiting the Family History Catalogue online for those of you who pay for Internet access by the minute. I ordered my copy yesterday, from Sydney and was told I should have it in 3 weeks, you need Microsoft Internet Explorer to read it, I believe, not sure if it comes with it in the CD, or you have to have it on your computer, I will wait and see, , Just another tool to find what films the LDS have, that my ancestors are hiding in.. 2. Creann, I don't have any information for you but I am in desperate need of your help if it is within your expertise. I am trying to solve a puzzle with my Mathers from the Borders area. I am from America so forgive me if I make any blunders. My earliest Mather is Andrew. I don't have a birthdate on him but it would be ca.1889. I have found his marriage record in the IGI as such:May 21, 1809 to MARTHA Ricarby Norham, Northumberland, England. There is a record on IGI for Robert Mather ch.3-10-1812 Golden Square Presby. Father:Andrew Mather Mother:Martha . There is a record for John Mather ch.4-8-1814Golden Square Presby. Father:Andrew Mather Mother:Margaret(?).Elizabeth Mather ch.3-17-1816 Golden Square Presby. Father: Andrew Mather Mother: Margaret. The second son John Mather is my ancestor. We were always told his father was also John Mather and mother was Martha Rickaby(Ricarby). Now there is also a Margaret thrown in to the mix. Is there any way you could check this out for me? Possibly the marriage of Andrew and Martha in 1809? Maybe she was Martha Margaret Ricarby or something? If you can help I would appreciate it. Thanks, Margaret

    1. BARWICK/BYERS/BEATIE/BARROW
    2. Greetings- I have a great-grandmother Margaret BARWICK (born 1863) who lived in Cumberland close enough to the border to throw a stone and have it land in Scotland. She had a sister Annie who may have married a BYERS and a brother whose daughter's name was Harriet BEATIE. Harriet's daughter, a J. BARROW, was last known to be living in Glasgow. I'd be interested in contacting the descendants of any of these families. Regards, Aletha

Hi All, I am hoping that some kind soul out there has the MIs for Newton St Boswells and Maxton and would do a look up for the name MITCHELL in them - I have finally made a breakthrough in my research, but am stumbling on my lack of ROX MI booklets - most have been checked out for me very kindly, but I have a strange hunch that St Boswells is the place! I have a lot of info for North Northumberland if anyone needs any look-ups there. Many thanks in anticipation. Creann Pieroni

It was a sub post office of the main one in Hawick. 3. Hello, I'm quite new to the list and joined because although my GRAHAM ancestors came from Cumberland I've traced them back to Arthuret right on the border. Is anyone else researching Grahams around 1800 from Arthuret? My other query is about naming customs. I understand the Scots had a particular method of choosing their childrens names but I don't know what the "pattern" is. Can SKS please enlighten me? Thanks, Judith Hoskins nr Bath, Somerset -- Judith Hoskins
