    1. Norham MIs
    2. Mike Simpson
    3. Hi all, Following my offer to do look-ups of the Norham MIs, I had a great number of requests. I have therefore posted all the MIs on my homepage as under. There is an index of 540 surnames and 130 pages of MIs in the form of .jpg scans of the typewritten original. Some pages are a bit blurred, but if you print them out they become very legible. Norham churchyard includes burials for Norham, Grindon, Shoreswood, Shoresdene and quite a lot from Berwickshire along with strays from all over the place. Good hunting. Best regards - Mike Simpson, Penrith, NSW, Australia Email: agene@bigfoot.com HomePage: http://www.bigfoot.com/~agene

    3. I am making a trip to the Scottish Borders in October and want to try and track down the grave of Walter Coltherd. My only information about him relates to his marriage in 1762 to Betty Rae, in Roberton, Selkirk, I believe. I do not know when he died. Has anyone come across this name? Thanks. 1. BIRRELL FAMILY
    2. moira hughes
    3. I am looking for information about John Birrell or Birrel who was born about 1788 in Old Graitney in Dumfries I believe he may be the son of George Birrell and Mary Elliot but cannot be certain. At some point he moved to Wetheral in Cumberland and married Rachel Miller 22 Jun 1815. Their children were Mary 1816, Joseph, 1817, George 1819, James 1821, Jane 1821, Margaret 1826, and Rachel 1828. All the children married so there must be a number of families resulting from John and Rachel. I know that George and his family migrated to Australia. My Grandfather who was descended from James always claimed that he had Birrell cousins who migrated to Canada. John Birrell died in 1861. During his life he seemed to have many career changes. I have seen him listed as a weaver, bleacher, logwood miller, cotton worker, farmer and gardener! Can anyone help? Moira Hughes. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Recently found g/g/g/grandma's death in 1857 under her maiden name of Margaret SYMINGTON at High Town, Galashiels. Her late husband described as a "woollen manufacturer" and although not named I know he was a John GRAY. Her mother was noted as Sarah Symington but born with the wonderful-sounding surname of MARJORIBANKS. Can anyone please advise me whether "woollen manufacturer" in 18th/19th century meant a man employing others in his woollen business or whether he alone would have made goods to sell? Or am I looking at this stated occupation too simply? Would also be very pleased to know if others are looking at these surnames in the Borders - one of Margaret's children was born at Greenlaw, BEW Regards to you all, Eileen in Hampshire, UK

    3. I asked the list a few weeks ago about finding the birth of James MARK who, according to his gravestone in Armidale (New South Wales), was born in Gallashiels in about 1807 and his father was called George. I have now tracked a second piece of evidence. The ship's passenger lists for the Midlothian in 1837 list him and his family. It states that he was born in 1809 at Roxburgh, parish of Norwich (the writing is hard to read). Can anybody help me out or direct me to archives/library that may hold this information?
