    3. If your Gt Gr Parents were marr 1871, all of that info' about the parents will be on the Marr. Cert. The Scottish Regd are most comprehensive, for Death Regd as well as Marr & Birth. Stow, is now a small village, but it must have been a very busy place, in the 19th centuary. It seems that there may have been a woolen mill, & a railway, at that time, from what I deduce from my research. However, there was also a large rural agriculture, work related, population. Can you read the O.P.R. film, it is quite a comprehesive film, gives a bit of an insight, with the local names coming up. There is a Church ruin, & a " new " church. I have been 2 X to Stow. !993, & 1998. The first visit, still had a pub, for a meal, in 1998, all there was, was a toasted sandwich from the B.&B, but very helpful B.& B. owner. If you want to know more do get back to me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "barbara smith" <barbsm@ematic.com> To: <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2000 3:46 AM Subject: Stow > > Hello, > Could anyone out there tell me a little about "The Parish of Stow?" > My great-grandparents were married there in the year 1871. 3. I am a new subscriber and am looking for connections to the family of William McKENZIE and Janet BROWN, who had two sons born in Bowden, Roxburghshire -George born 9 February 1808 and James christened 3 June 1810. George McKENZIE married an Isabella LOSH (born 1800 in Wigton, Cumberland) and subsequently they moved to Otterburn, Northumberland where three children Elisabeth 1839, George 1841 and Janet 1843 were baptised in the Presbyterian church there. Before that they had William LOSH McKENZIE born 1831 but I do not know whether in Scotland or England. I have all the direct descendants of William Losh McKENZIE to date. Any connections or leads on William McKENZIE and Janet BROWN their ancestors or other descendants. I have searched the IGI and Scots Origins online. I cannot find their marriage or parents. 3. Hi Extract from an old gazetteer. "A delightful village, situated on the Gala Water, with a fine packhorse bridge, dating from 1655. The old church is in ruins. The modern church has a 140 ft. high spire. In the vicinity, once known as "Stow of Wedale" the Saxons are said to have been routed by King Arthur, who founded a church as a thanksgiving. A delightful road proceeds eastwards from Stow, crossing the moors at a height of over 1100 ft. before descending into Lauderdale, and reaching the small town of Lauder. To the west of Stow rise the lonely Moorfoot hills." My ancestors lived there for a while. best wishes Doug & Kit Leitch Solihull UK ----- Original Message ----- From: "barbara smith" <barbsm@ematic.com> To: <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com>

In 1840 three generations of his descendants (among them my g.g.g. grandfather William, my g.g. grandfather Francis and my g. grandfather John aged 10 years) emigrated from Roxburghshire to the Leeds-Grenville County area of Ontario (Canada West.) 3. Does anyone know about a Catherine J. Hamsey who was a servant at the Coxhoebridge Hotel, Durham, England? She was on the 1881 census for Coxhoebridge, Durham, listed as unmarried, aged 16, a Domestic Servant from Scotland. I ask the people of this list as the family she was living with have roots in the Berwickshire/East Lothian areas of Scotland and assume that she may be a friend of the family from there or something. She was living with Isabella Runciman Scott, widower, 36, Inn Keeper and from Scotland. James L. Scott, son, 12, scholar, born Coxhoebridge, Durham. George W. Scott, son, 10, cholar, born Coxhoebridge, Durham. Researching RUNCIMAN- any information about the name, and people with the name. Can anyone help??? Thank you, Alethea. P.S. I'm on the Durham list but no one seems to really know about the Runciman's or the Inn/hotel.

I cannot tell you how to get there as a distant relative of mine was showing us where some of our ancestors (SHORTREEDs) were buried, but someone living in the area could easily tell you the location. There are several headstones in the cemetery. If Linden is the same as Lindean churchyard, I have been there also. It is located approximately 1/2 mile past Selkirk Glass, as you are leaving Selkirk and the first turn to the right, then the first turn to the left. There is a horse riding stable located there and right before you get to the main house is the churchyard. A very few headstones are remaining there.
