Marjorie Gavin has kindly sent me the obituary of George HOBKIRK (a baker and corn merchant of Hawick) who died in 1877. It inter alia states that he and his brothers spent their youth (from about 1810 to about 1830 or so) in the Ale Water District. Can anybody enlighten me: 1. Which Parishes does Ale Water encompass? 2. Are there any articles on it on the internet? 3. Are there any publications that contain information on it and it's inhabitants in the 18th and 19th centuries? Any relevant information/guidance will be gratefully received. Hi Cindy, I don't see any connection except that there is a "Janet" in common although different generations. But I thought I'd throw my HALLIDAYS(HALIDAYS, HOLLIDAYS) into the ring. Descendants of Robert Halliday 1 Robert Halliday +Helen Spark m: 18 May 1771 in Gordon, Berwick, Scotland 2 Alexander Haliday b: 02 August 1778 +Janet Smith 2 Isoble Haliday b: 22 April 1780 2 Anne Holliday b: 20 April 1788 in Hutton, Berwick, Scotland d: Aft. 1860 in USA +Thomas Dodds b: Bef. 12 March 1786 in Northfield, Berwick, Scotland m: 26 May 1811 in Hutton, Berwick, SCOTLAND d: 28 September 1846 in Swinton Bank, Peebles, Scotland 2 Elizabeth Halliday b: July 1789 Hopefully, someone will see a connection as I would love to know more about the HALLIDAY family. Carolyn Schaeffer cbwds@aol.com , << Hi Has been quite a while since I posted the surnames I am working on; all brick walls of course! Richard HALLIDAY, born c. 1820 married Jane KETLEY, born c. 1820 (possible daughter of John KETLEY) They had two (that I have found so far) children: Agnes HALLIDAY, 1843 Archibald HALLIDAY, 1847 Archibald HALLIDAY moved to Chelsea, England at some point, and was a soldier, living in Chelsea barracks in 1871 census. He married later that year, and lived in Chelsea and Lowestoft, Suffolk until at least 1879. His wife and children were living in a workhouse in Suffolk in late 1879; have not found any record of Archibald after that date--dead or alive! Perhaps he returned to Scotland?? I have found that Agnes HALLIDAY had a child, (Janet), but do not know who the father was. Jean Ketley was no longer living with Richard by 1850--she had a son, George, with Morris WELSH in 1850. In 1859 she had a child, Margaret, who carried the KETLEY surname. In 1881 census Jean is living with her children George WELSH, and Agnes HALLIDAY, and her grandaughter Janet HALLIDAY. No mention of a husband; George is the head of the family. I would really like to know if she married any of her "husbands"--have not yet found marraige records, nor death records for her husbands. Was someone looking for Robsons in the borders area? If so, mail me off list, perhaps I can help? Heather in Canada
Hi Everyone, I am wondering if anyone has access to the Selkirk or Maxton MIs. If so would someone be kind enough to look and see if there are any CLERKs or CLARKs. I am particularly looking for Robert CLERK (md about 1763) and his wife Margaret CLERK (nee WILKIE) - however any CLARK, CLERK, or WILKIE names that appear would be helpful. Also, if anyone is researching these names in the Borders than I'd love to hear from you. Kind regards, Cameron Clark.

This aside is being permitted by the list owner if you can read it. A gentle pause and reminder of how best to help your SKS's. As a new lister once upon a time, I used to drive myself nuts because I never got anywhere with my queries. It took many SKS's a lot of patience to drum it into my head that making a request like the following was a fruitless exercise. They just ignored me. Why? "I need help, I have a relative who lives on the planet earth and do you know him?" Now, that is obviously a dumb question, and too broad a one at that, and yet I persisted in asking that same type of question over and over...I just would not learn that the more specific and isolating the data I could give the SKS's, the more apt I was to get some help. As a result I am now cured and immune, [yeah sure!] but not perfect. But, wow, do I see myself too often, still. Take pity on we poor sots. One last comment, asking for help in a country is far less productive then if you could get it down as close to Country/County or District/City/Parish/Street///time period/within a couple of years at least///Surname[choices] and a few relationships. If you cannot do that, then you cannot expect too much help because most of us have our own projects underway and unless your job fits into our plans we will ignore it. We are seldom without something to do on our own files. Sometimes I take pity on the odd "challenge" just to break up the boredom but seldom do I have the time to pour over tombs for useless data. Mind you a writer wrote me the other day looking for a group called the Scorpions in Scotland, I believe. I quite enjoyed my little romp into the magical and mystic legendary realms of the middle ages. Never did find the group but we got to exercise our brains and use lots of logic and reasonable alternative approaches to work out a reasonable solution. Hi all listers, After my request last weekend re KERSLEY in Hawick, may I thank the people who replied, especially Derek Robertson who sent me a newspaper cutting announcing the death of Leonard KERSLEY husband of Margaret KERSLEY(nee NISBET) in France during the first world war. Hi Lee, Grantshouse lies on the banks of the Eye Water, a small river which enters the North Sea at Eyemouth. Both the main Great North Road (A1) and the London to Edinburgh railway run through the village. The railway is carried on an embankment and numerous bridges which carry it over the Eye Water. In 1947 (if I remember the year correctly), the river flooded following torrential rain in the hills above Grantshouse and carried away the railway in numerous places, causing considerable disruption to rail transport as the traffic had to be diverted (via the Berwick - Kelso branch line) until such time as the bridges could be rebuilt. So really in answer to your query, the lowland beside Grantshouse is a river valley, subject to flooding and the road is built up above the flood levels to enter the village safely. Hi Mary, I don't think that Gala has a high population of Irish descent. I was certainly not aware of it growing up there, in fact there were probably more people of Polish/Ukranian families than Irish. Hower, it is likely that they came to the Borders to work in the woolen mills which were expanding rapidly at that time Regards Karen in Cheshire, UK mcwalker wrote: > > Hello I am new to the list, so I thought I would post my interests and > see if anyone out there has any in common. > I have ancestors listed getting married there in 1855 they were > Michael Martin married Margaret Burk (Burke) their parents were > Andrew Martin and Mary Morrey > Richard Burk and Ann Shandley > > both parents were originally form Ireland, does anyone know if > Galashiels was predominantly Irish decent? > > Hope someone recognizes someone, would be good to hear from someone. > Regards Mary Walker

Hello List-- If there is anyone who is familiar with the area around and adjacent to Grantshouse, Berwickshire, I would like to know if what appears to be low-land on the map, is bog or tidal land and if the approaches to the village are construed to be causeways. This information might be instrumental in tracing my Gggg-grandfather. Thanks, Lee Kenna
Hi Diana, am I askig to much if you could please see if there are any Aitchison or Cairns in your book. I would be most grateful,. Thank you. Ruth Edwards.

Hello once again everyone. I am still stuck and don't know if I had any response to my last census lookup request as I changed my e-mail address and no one has replied to my new one. I was after a census lookup to be done on the 1841 and 1851 census returns for Berwickshire. I am trying to find a Thomas RUNCIMAN who was married to Mary REDPATH/RIDPATH in 1812. Thomas would be around 60 on the 1851 census and probably living in Coldingham, Coldstream or Cairnside/ness. I'm not too sure exactly where but am fairly certain it was Berwickshire. I really need to find out who his parents were and particularly his mother's maiden surname. I know they went over to America around the mid 1850's and have loads of info after that time. I would be greatful if anyone would do this lookup for me as I do not have access to the census return for Scotland and my FHC does not hold them either. Thank you very much in advance, Alethea Watson. Researching RUNCIMAN and various spellings, and want to know any links that people have with the name.
