I'd appreciate it if anyone with access to the 1881 British Census could check in Roxburghshire for entries pertaining to James O. MINTO and a wife (Margaret?) and possibly children Janet, James and Andrew. Thanks for your help. Bill Pryde Nepean, Ontario, Canada
Hi everyone, For many months now this surname list (at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/2039/) has been frozen and people have been unable to contact the list maintainer to add new surnames, update existing entries etc. For many months I've tried in vain to contact the maintainer of the list, using an email address that did work (unlike the one on the list pages), at least until today when her email quota seems full! I've decided now to take over the list and maintain it much like my existing Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire surname lists. The surname list for Berwickshire is very similar anyway - indeed I set up its original list pages in October 1997 and passed them onto the current maintainer to look after then. It shouldn't be too hard for me to run. It will take me several days to copy the existing surname list entries and put them up on a new website. I will also need to email all the people who have submitted entries to the Berwickshire Surname List in the past (who have entries in there already) to check that their email addresses work and/or if they want to update their entries. Some people who have submitted entries will have changed their email address so the address that I use to try to contact them will not work. If you fall into this category (i.e. have submitted an entry or entries, but the contact details for you on the currently frozen list are out- of-date) can you please email me to let me have your new email address. When the new version of the Berwickshire Surname List is up and running I will post a short message here, and also arrange for links to be made to it from places like GENUKI, GenWeb, Cyndi's List, etc. etc. Then I will be very happy to receive new entries to the list, especially from people who have tried in the past to submit them but without success. But in the meantime can I please ask for a little patience? Many thanks and best wishes. Viv Dunstan http://www.vivdunstan.clara.net/
William H KERSE(born c. 1848), the son of William KERSE Tailor of Leitholm, married Jane MITCHEL, possibly also of Leitholm. They moved to Kells in Ireland and had a family of 9 children. There are no birth/christening records in the OPR of either of these(or their marriage) or 4 of Williams siblings, and 3 of his cousins, all born in Eccles Parish over the 1841 to 1856 period. There was a non-conformist church in Leitholm at this period, and it is quite possible that their records rest her, ie at the SRO. I would be interest in any later information on the Mitchel family, ie the births of the children of those listed. Peter Kerse Wanganui New Zealand
I'm having some difficulty tracking my gg grandfather and ggg grandfather, both named John Darling and both from Berwickshire. Part of the problem is that family lore identifies the younger John Darling as having been born in 1824 at Kelso, while FamilySearch on the Internet says John Darling was born 11 May 1824 at Edrom to John Darling and Elisabeth Wight. Scottish Church records from the LDS say John Darling was born 11 May 1824 at Duns. Cemetery records at Aspdin, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, where the Darlings settled after emigrating about 1850, says the younger John Darling's mother, Elizabeth, was born in 1801 and died in 1888. FamilySearch identifies her as Elisabeth Wight, married to John Darling on 3 May 1823 at Duns. born about 1802 in Berwickshire and died in 1843 in Scotland. Her husband, the elder John Darling, is shown as born in May 1800 in Berwickshore and died 7 Jun 1872 in Vernon, Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA after a second marriage to Susan Bertram. Does anyone have any ideas about how to resolve these conflicts? -- Peterborough, Ontario, Canada family website - http://www3.sympatico.ca/roger.dray/index.html
I am looking of information on my g-g-g-grandfather William Black who married Isabella Stewart on 31 Dec 1833 in Neilston Parish Renfrew. William was born around 1804 and died between 1845 and 1851. His occupation was a Coal Miner. Isabella was christened 11 Oct 1802 in Ardnamurchan Argyll and died 22 Oct 1885 in Macks Land, Baillieston, Old Monkland, Lanark. As of this moment I know they had at least six children: Walter Black born about 1834 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton Hugh Black born 15 Jul 1836 in Campsie Stirling. Hugh married Agnes Teesdale on 12 Jun 1857 in Dalserf, Lanark. William Black born about 1838 in Campsie Stirling John Black born 28 Jun 1840 in Govan, Renfrew Alison Black born about 1843 in Shettleston, Lanark who married Robert Morton in 1859 and Alexander Munro in 1873. James Black born about 1845 in Shettleston, Lanark. Williams place of birth is unknown. However, according to the 1841 census he was not born in Lanarkshire, even though at the time he was working there. Any information on William Black or his descendants would be appreciated. ie. Birth, death, marriages, offsprings etc. Though the biggest part of my quest is in finding the parents and siblings of William Black.

Hello Listers, I am new to the Border listings but have traced many of my family through other Rootsweb sites. I am trying to find any details of my ggrandfather William Henry Blackadder Thompson and his parents David Blackadder Thompson / Margaret Hogg who resided in Northumberland. I understand that David Blackadder Thompson was head coachman for Sir Henry Askew MP at Pallinsburn House. I have information which makes me believe that William may have been born circa 1841 but have been unable to find any record either in St Catherine's House Index or the Scots GRO. On his Son (William's ) Marriage certificate in NSW Australia his father and mother (David Thompson / Margaret Hogg) were reported to be alive in Northumberland in 1881. David Thompson's occupation was specified as a farmer. What I am specifically looking for is any BDM records or Census information which may help me to trace these three persons. I believe Palinsburn House is in Ford Parish, Crookham Constablewick. If anyone could could provide any information which may help me find this my people it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I'm researching my 3x great grandfather Alexander MORTON (a gardener) and his wife Margaret GOWAN/COWAN (daughter of Charles, a weaver). They married at Edinburgh, St Cuthbert's in 1806 but were in the area around Jedburgh and Crailing from then until around 1812. In 1812/1813 they moved to Alnwick, Northumberland where I believe Alexander worked for Henry Collingwood Selby Esq. They later moved to Causey Park, Northumberland then Newcastle upon Tyne. They had children baptised: David (at Crailing, 1805 or possibly 1806), Mary (at Crailing, 1811), Henry Collingwood Selby (at Alnwick, 1813) and Margaret (at Alnwick, 1815). The Scottish OPR index wrongly lists David and Mary under the surname MARTON, but the registers clearly show the name as MORTON. The OPR index also lists the baptism at Jedburgh of John MARTIN, son of Alexander MARTIN and Margaret GOWAN - they may be "my" family but I haven't been able to check the original register yet. I'd love to hear from anyone with MORTON connections on either side of the border. Over the last few years I've been compiling a database of MORTONs in Northumberland (I'm now going to extend it to South-east Scotland) and I'd be happy to search it for anyone. Additional entries from your family histories would also be most welcome. Can anyone provide me with further information on Crailing? GENUKI gives a little, but I'd like to know who the major land-owners were? Which families were likely to have employed a gardener in the early days of the 19th century. Neil Morton

The Whitsome OPR index shows a James Miller son of John M. and Mary Spark bap. 2 mar 1818, and Isabella to the same parents 5 Dec 1821. There's also an MI for James Millar died 1855, born about 1819 from the age given. No bap. or marriage for John/Mary, but there is a Mary Spark bap. 4 Jan 1778, dau. of James (no indication of mother). Very many thanks to everybody who helped me re the above. It seems there are 2 streams of that name - one that rises in Alemoor Loch in Roberton and another which is a tributary of the River Eye in Berwickshire. The first is the one I was looking for and I am still interested to know: 1. Whether there is any online information on it? 2. Whether there are any books or papers published on it and it's inhabitants in the 18th and early 19th centuries? Peter Stone stone@futurest.co.za SOUTH AFRICA
Hi Peter, The Ale Water is a tributary of the Eye, it rises on Coldingham Moor in Berwickshire and enters the Eye about a mile inland from Eyemouth. The only parish it flows through would be Coldingham passing between Coldingham village and the hamlet of Cairncross. A large scale map of the area can be found at www.old-maps.co.uk and look for Berwickshire then Coldingham. No doubt someone on this list can advise regarding parish registers etc for the area. I am currently researching my wife's grandfather and his origins in Greenlaw. His name was William Rennie Wood Feeney. We thought that his mother (Agnes Aitchison Wood) and father (Daniel Feeney) married in 1892 in Duns, which they did. William however was born in 1887 in Greenlaw, and was registered as illegitimate, under the name William Rennie Wood. Does anyone know whether this name would signify that his father was William Rennie. A lad of the same age as Agnes appears in the 1881 Census in Greenlaw, the son of the station master. Therefore Daniel would have married a single mother and presumably 'adopted' William. Would thee have been any paternity suits at that time in this area, and if so where would the records be? Also would love to hear from anyone with interests in these names in this area of Berwickshire. Thanks Tim Wilcock Farnham, Surrey,England
