Hi, Just a snipet of information that may be of use. My old primary school, The Burgh School in Galashiels is celebrating 125 years & in one newspaper article I found this: "Back when the school was founded in 1875, Mr Thomas Bain, from Tranent, was appointed head teacher on a wage of £200 per year, with his assistant slightly down the scale at a mere £70." Regards karen in Cheshire, UK
Hello Micki, Might your SANDERSON family from "Tullylagan, Scotland" have hailed from the parish of Tulliallan in Fife (or Perthshire, depending on the timeframe of interest). If so, then you'll find information about the parish at: http://www.rocinante.demon.co.uk/klhg/kinhisty/histy8.htm Best regards, Steve Karner (sugarglider@cox-internet.com, Texas USA) In BEW I like BLACKADDER, CAMPBELL, COSSAR, ENNERWICK (& a few more) - it's in the blood!
Could some kind soul provide the link to the scanned interactive map. I overlooked to bookmark it. Thanks Peter Kerse Wanganui New Zealand
Hello! I believe my SANDERSONS have their origins in Border, however, after a generation born in 1550 in Preston, they are all listed in the IGI as born in Tullylagan all the way up to 1800! I cannot find this town anywhere in Scotland. Could this be the name of a farm? The IGI has them listed as _________Sanderson, born_________in Of, Tullylagan, Scotland. Perhaps the "Of" is a clue... Thanks so much Micki L. Sanderson Researching: MELDRUM, GORRIE, DORWARD in Forfar/Angus SANDERSON in Borders/Berwick MELDRUM in Fife
Hello again Elizabeth, I'm posting this to the list as the content might be of use to a past/present/future subscriber. In my reply to your query re MILLERs from Duns, I transcribed some parish register entries that referenced the parish of Abbey St Bathans. If you recall, these were for MILLERs other than the family of John - whom you were seeking. If, by chance, these other MILLERs connect with your family you might want to keep the following information at hand. In looking through the book entitled: 'The Churches and Churchyards of Berwickshire' by James Robson (published by J. and J.H. Rutherford, Kelso, in 1896) I found the following monumental inscription for a headstone in the burying ground surrounding the church at Abbey St Bathans. I quote from Robson: 'A medium-sized stone, though comparatively modern, is curiously inscribed in very rude lettering thus- "Here lyes Thomas Miller who died in Desmbr 6th 1778 aged 77 years as also hise spoues Isbel Trotter who died in dsmbr 24th 1763 aged 85 years as also there sone who died jenry 24 1762 aged 19 years." ' I have triple checked my typing above, and it appears I have written exactly as printed in the book (spelling and all). Personally, I find this entry intriguing as the ages and death dates don't seem to gel very well (especially the description of 'there sone'). I hope this might be useful for you. Best regards, Steve Karner (sugarglider@cox-internet.com in Texas, USA) In BEW I like BLACKADDER, CAMPBELL, COSSAR (& a few more) - it's in the blood!

Hello Tom Aitchison, that was my Grandfather's and G Grandfather's name, but no alas, I don't know if they came from Roxburough way. My George Aitchison married in Greenlaw Berwichshire to Janet Cairns in 1822, thats as far back as I have gotten with either of them, he was dead by the 1851 census and the 1841 only says he came from the area, and by that time he was living in Oldhamstocks in East Lothian. It wasn't me who had the book mentioned, but Diana Leitch, and she offered to do lookups of Greenlaw. I would be most interested to hear more of your Aitchison's I know my Grandfather had relatives in Canada but don't know any more than that, I also know that Granddads brother Peter Aitchison went to America to somewhere near Boston, but that was about the 1920's Cheers Ruth Edwards Australia

I am a recent subscriber and am looking for connections to the family of William McKENZIE and Janet BROWN, who had two sons born in Bowden, Roxburghshire - George born 9 February 1808 and James christened 3 June 1810. There are a few BROWN graves in the church graveyard at Bowden, but no McKENZIEs. George McKENZIE married an Isabella LOSH (born 1800 in Wigton, Cumberland) in Leithkirk and subsequently they moved to Otterburn, Northumberland where three children Elisabeth 1839, George 1841 and Janet 1843 were baptised in the Presbyterian church there. Before that they had William LOSH McKENZIE born 1831 in Edinburgh and baptised at the United Sessions church. He married Ellen ELLIOTT in Heworth, NBL on 25 December 1857. George died in Leithirk in 1883. Any connections or leads on William McKENZIE and Janet BROWN their ancestors or other descendants. Hi Doug, Don't know if this is any help or not, but I ran across the Blackadder surname in the LDS film for the OPRs for Sprouston and Stitchill & Hume Parishes. Entry was a birth of a William Blackadder b. 1784 in Stitchill, sorry I didn't take note of the parents names.
