To those folk interested in the above farms in the Jedburgh area. In the 1881 Census I found the Pleasesnts, 2 families of Fergusons and a Fred Galloway b Edin. 1852, living Pleansants Schoolhouse , Schoolmaster of Elem. Pub. School. don't know where his pupils were. I would say the locals said Pleasance, Census place was Jedburgh. Someone else wanted to know about Under Hindhope, it is next to Upper Hindhope near Oxnam. both large farms 2000 acres & 3000 acres with a few shepherds. These are near the Scottish/English Border with the sheep roaming the moors. I would think that the Hindhope farms are there. My brick wall is Adam Kedzie, and his wife Margaret Stewart. We know nothing about Margaret Stewart other than she was born somewhere around Hawick, Scotland, in the year of 1746. She married Adam Kedzie July of 1770, and she died in 12/29/1820 in Delhi New York, and buried in South Kortright cemetary. Both were born in around Hawick, married, had all 8 of the children in the Hawick, Roxboughshire, area. In 1795, they boarded a "boat" bound for New York, and arrived in the USA, in the spring of that year. Finding their names on ship's list has not been accomplished, even though they traveled with Robert Hume family. In Scotland however, is another matter. We do not know the name of their ship, and cannot find parents of either one. Margaret Stewart, because of her very common name is almost non-existant. I may have found Adam's parents but the christening is so distorted it is very hard to be sure. So if anyone runs across a "Kedzie" while looking for others, please let me know. Thank you in advance. Jeanette
Have tried everywhere with this fellow and still no luck - James Morris Waddell subsequently with added name of Taylor born "out of wedlock" Stow, MLN 1876 living in Galashiels, SEL by 1891 as James Taylor. Last heard of in same place in 1892 as informant on father/stepfather Joseph Taylor's death registration. Mother Jessie WADDELL, daughter of Andrew Waddell and Alison Howieson. Any help appreciated - thank you. Eileen
Seeking information on descendants of John Fulton, who may have been a blacksmith in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, around 1795. He had at least one son, William, who died in Hawick, in 1875. James D. Fulton
Hello Listers My brick wall - over the past 50 years or so, many people in my family have tried to get over this wall - and failed - wouldn't it be good if we could demolish it now, with the help of this list!!! I have the family Bible, dated 1849. I accept that some of the early information in it is from memory at the time and memories handed down from one generation to the next do not always remain accurate - but this is what I have: William AIR and Isabella WEATHERHEAD married on 17th March 1775 Now, I know that they lived in Coldstream after their marriage, and I know that all of their children were born there. I know that William AIR is the correct name, as I have seen documents with his signature on - also something addressed to him as Wm. AYR - but I have never been able to discover where they were married, or if we have the correct name for his wife. All the baptism records for their children only give the father's name - apparently this is common in Scotland - Well, we have tracked down a lot of their descendents, all over the globe, but it would be so good to be able to progress just a little further back. William AIR was probably born about 1735. He died in 1791. With your help - I am hopeful :-) TIA Janice Wood, in North Yorkshire

I believe my brick wall is immoveable because of such a shortage of information, but will post it anyhow. Isabella SHORT, born 1775 in Carham (no proof of this). This list is very quite, where has everyone gone? I like to read what people's interests are to see if I have any connections. Can people re-post themas I may have missed some and it would give us all something to talk about. Alethea
I have Scots ancestors who lived in Ireland. Is there a way to find when the left Scotland to go to Ireland and where they came from in Scotland? The names are MOFFATT and MORRISON. Elizabeth (Bessie) MOFFATT, daughter of Robert and Mary Moffatt, was born in Tullylig, Northern Ireland in approximately 1815. Elizabeth (Bessie) MOFFATT married Robert MORRISON of Tullylig, son of William MORRISON. I know both of these families were originally from Scotland. Where? When? Who parents? Many thanks, Joan
Hi, everyone I'm new to this board and have been "listening" but not writing because I haven't really started doing Scots genealogy yet. I have Scots ancestors who lived in Ireland and wonder if it will ever be possible to make a breakthrough as to where they came from in Scotland: Patterson Kirkpatrick Watson Would be interested to know if anyone has made progress in this area? Thanks. Patty, NY

My father used to talk of the Pleasance, which I am sure is a farm near Jedburgh, it could be The Pleasant pronounced in the usual Scottish way. Not really near Sprouston Marion
I was wondering if SKS could do a census lookup for me please. I need to find out if there was a family of Runciman's living on Newbigging Farm, Lauder or Newbigging Walls Farm, Lauder (I believe that they are both farms). I need the 1841 census checked and the 1851 census checked also. The 1831 census would be good- if there was one? I think the head of the family would have been Thomas Runciman and wife Mary Ridpath. I would just love to know anything at all about these farms and who worked on them at the time of the censuses. Thank you once again, Alethea.
Hi Alethea, There were a Newbigging and Newbigging Walls, apparently farms at Lauder, Berwickshire in the 1881 census Best regards - Mike Simpson, Penrith, NSW, Australia Email: agene@bigfoot.com HomePage: http://www.bigfoot.com/~agene
G'day Trish, The Pleasance is a street in Edinburgh close to Holyrood Park. You should be able to find it on one of the streetmap sites (http://uk.multimap.com/map/places.cgi/; http://www.streetmap.co.uk; http://www.mapquest.com etc). Can't think what the other queries might relate to. Are you sure that BAKER is a surname in this instance and not an occupation? If it was the occupation of Thomas GRAY (and Gray is more of a Borders surname than Baker), then "Leod" might refer to the occupation of John Colquhoun. Good luck!
