Hello, I have just resubscribed to the list after a few months leave. Can anyone tell me if anyone has indexed the 1851 census for the Berwick Upon Tweed or Tweedmouth areas? Or, could anyone do a look up for me?? I am searching for ROBERTSON family names from Berwick Upon Tweed and Tweedmouth. Does anyone have any connections to William ROBERTSON, born around 1834 in BuT, or his sons Adam ROBERTSON, born around 1859 in BuT, Alexander ROBERTSON , born around 1865 in BuT, or William ROBERTSON, born around 1868 in BuT? My grandfather, James ( their younger brother) was born in Edinburgh, so apparently the family moved to Edinburgh sometime between 1868-1872. I am also looking for SCOTT family members, also from Berwick Upon Tweed. My great grandfather William ROBERTSON ( the one born around 1834) married Isabella SCOTT, sometime around 1858-9. There are also nieces and cousins with the last names of CLEGHORN and SHORT all from Berwick Upon Tweed. If anyone has any connections to these families, Please, please, please, let me know. Thanks, Dawn, southern CA.

Hi everybody, I must confess that I'm not sure that this is the best list for me to be on. However, my STEELE and YOUNG families must have come to Cumberland from somewhere so maybe it was the Border area. If I may, I will monitor the list as well as the others and hope for the best. Just reposting my own wall. I have the Bible of a forebear Hilenor BEATTIE of Kirndean, Liddesdale. The Bible was printed in 1767 but I have no idea whether it belonged to Hilenor as a young girl or old lady. It came to me from my known BEATTIE family who lived in Alwinton and close by in Northumberland from the 1790s onward so I suspect that Hilenor was from previous generations -- but I dont know !! One heartbreaking fact about the Bible -- Hilenor wrote in the date 'February 22nd' -- but not the year !! Peter in NZ

James TROTTER Sr. was purportedly born in Scotland, circa 1725. According to our information, his parents were: William Trotter of Scotland and Caroline Dill/Hill of England. James Trotter went to Virginia before 1743. He was married to Ann ____, in Brunswick, Virginia in 1743. Any information that anyone might have would be appreciated. Just a theory, but it is possible that he lived in the Fife area, near the family of David PEEBLES and Elspet MACKIE. These are David and Elspet'children who stayed in Scotland: Christian, Criston, Thomas. Captain David PEEBLES/PEEPLES/PEOPLES, left Scotland and settled in Virginia, before 1655. His son, William, also settled in Virginia around that time. It is possible that some members of these PEEBLES or MACKIE families may be able to give us information about the TROTTER family. My ggg-grandfather, John Jardine, was, according to census records, born in Jedburgh about 1795. He died in Kirkhope, Selkirk, 21 Dec 1865; according to his death certificate, his parents were William Jardine & Mary Anderson. I haven't been able to locate any information about the parents, marriage, or other children of William Jardine & Mary Anderson, and would welcome any & all suggestions. Anne Hupert Chicago, USA
I am looking for the marriage of George SCOTT and Margaret WAIT. According to an entry in the IGI this was 'about 1780 at Ayton' Berwickshire and the source was LDS Temple records for deceased individuals. George and Margaret's first(?) child, Mary, was baptised in Ayton in 1781. Then there were 2 children baptised in Coldingham - Janet in 1783 and George in February 1785. Then they appear to have settled in Clappers where George was a blacksmith. They had 4 more daughters baptised in Mordington: Mary in November 1785, Margaret 1788, Elizabeth 1790 and Alison 1792. I do not have access to a Family History Centre at the moment - it closed down last year for extensive repairs to the building and hasn't re-opened since. Any help in finding out where he come from would be extremely useful. Best wishes, Rosemary, Northumberland

Hi list, My brick wall is with Walter CAVERS, who emigrated to England prior to 1826, from Scotland (& married Jane MARTIN in Arnold Nottingham). on the 1841 census, his age is given as 40, and I took his age as subject to the usual variation, however, I've read the book "A Clearer Sense of the Census" which states that for the ages, householders were told "For persons it is sufficient to state within what period of five years their age is, writing down the lowest number of that period: thus, for persons 15-20 write 15, (and so on) BUT the exact age MAY be entered if the person prefers"! So, Walters age could be between 40 and 45, however a further clue was on the 1851 census, which gives his age as 50. this gives his birth year as between 1796 and 1801, but, I feel, 1800-1801 can be relied upon. Viv Dunstan has helped me with possible baptisms in Kirkton, but based on prior to 1800, and I've used the Scottish Origins website. On looking back, I can't find a matching birth in Kirkton, 1800-1801, so I can't find his parents. I've looked at the marriage record, but doesn't give parents, I've tried finding his grave stone but can't find where he is. Anyone any thoughts? I know that there are research tools I haven't used, (mainly because I'm unaware of them) If you have an insight, please contact me. Rod Smith rorysmith@mail.com
