Just to add to the walls that seem to be springing up across the Borders region, here's mine: Alexander PRIDE and Mary PEARSON Both were born sometime around 1820 in Scotland. I'm assuming the location was in the Borders area since their children were all born in the Borders. I'm also assuming they married in the late 1830's since their first child was born in 1839. The children: George, b. 1 Jul 1839, Mertoun, Berwick William, b. 4 Jun 1841, Greenlaw, Berwick Alexander, b. 9 Apr 1843, Eccles, Berwick John, b. abt 1845, Roxburgh Robert, b. abt 1846 Ann, b. 22 Nov 1846, Chirnside, Berwick Thomas, b. 26 Apr 1855, Prestonkirk, East Lothian Based on information in son John's 1868 marriage certificate, it appears that Alexander died after 1868 and Mary before 1868. Any information on the family would be appreciated. Bill Pryde Nepean, Ontario, Canada Tel: 613-992-8213 Fax: 613-996-3746 bpryde@nss.gc.ca <mailto:bpryde@nss.gc.ca>
I have a reference to James Renton, Hind in St. Leonard's, married Helen Lothian. This was from an LDS Lauder microfilm (103227). Can anyone identify St. Leonard's? Is this a town? a parish? Where is it? Thank you, Gail Dowell
My brick wall belongs to one Andrew HAIG who was probably born in Scotland in 1793. My belief is that he was born somewhere around Berwick-on Tweed. I know that his father lived with his second wife at a place called Blackadderbank Farm just outside Berwick and was also called Andrew. BUT, do you think I can find any evidence of his birth or his mother's name - no show. I know his father's second wife's name, but can find no trace of either of their births. We have had professional researchers on the trail, but brick wall every time. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Raeanne.
Seeking parents of William Renton, b. 1705?, d, 1787?. He lived at Wisely Mill, Channelkirk Parish, Lauder, and had 9 children baptized at Channelkirk. Is this William Renton of Parkfoot, 1705-1787? I have some reason to believe his father was also William Renton, of Tranent, E. Lothian, but can't prove it. If anyone has a good handle on the Tranent Rentons - there are lots of them! - I would appreciate advice. Thank you, Gail Dowell
Hi all, I have been reading with interest all your postings re your brick walls. Sorry I can;t help you with any of these, but for those of you interested in Irish/Scotish research I can recommend the nir-down-list. I remember there was a big discussion a couple of moonths ago about the Ulster Plantation, which for those of you who don't know, is where Scotish families were voluntarily relocated to various parts of Ulster (Northern Ireland). You should be able to search the archive of this list for the above subject. By the way Dutch (from Nova Scotia) I'm married to an Irish Cunningham and my maiden name was Henderson (sorry no Smith's on either side of the family). :-)) My brick wall at the moment is Jane Gibson chr 14th May 1775 at Ladykirk. Can't find any information on her parents. Cheers, Kate
Hi Listers I have come up against a brick wall and hopefully some one will have some ideas. According to family bibles old papers etc the ancestor I am trying to find was born in Lilliesleaf Rox in 1853 and his name is James Brown mother Helen Dunlop father Robert Brown. I have found his sisters/brothers but no trace of him. LDS records have Lilliesleaf parish records from 1855. Does anyone have any ideas where to look next. I hae tried ORigins under all variations of what his name could be - nothing. ANy help gratefully received. I am visiting the borders in January from Perth Aus and want to try and find the family graves. Thanks Jean DUff Signup for your free Virtual Countries E-mail address at http://www.scotland.com

Hello Listers, Here's my brick wall: Robert Logan born about 1723 somewhere in Scotland. He may come from the Border area, or possibly Ayrshire, but these are only educated ;-) guesses. Anyway, he turns up on the Isle of Man around 1760's as a merchant (and possible smuggler) in Ramsey. He possibly has a brother, John Logan, who also settles on the Isle of Man and the 2 of them marry sisters (Jane & Elizabeth Christian) and settle at Dreemskerry, Maughold. I've lots of info on them from then on, but I'd dearly love to trace them back to Scotland. Any help, suggestions etc welcome. Regards, Judith Hoskins -- Judith Hoskins
Looking for any connection to Thomas LITTLE, b. May 8, 1854, in we believe the Dumfries area in Scotland his parents were Thomas LITTLE and Isabelle ALLEN. His obituary states that as a young child the family moved to England. We think that Thomas Little was probably from the Border area and his move to England was just across the border...so to speak. Thomas Little migrated from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, PA, September 28, 1868. He is on the ships passenger list as age 14, a miner, and traveling alone. He worked in the Southern Illinois coal mining industry ending his career as an Illinois State mine inspector. Family stories tell that Thomas Little's parents died and he left behind two sisters when he immigrated. Any help will be appreciated. Barbara Little
My brickwall - Wilhelmina OLIVER also known as Menie and Minie or as I call her 'my Minnie'. She married William ANDERSON 13 May 1829 Lienassie, Kintail, Ross-shire; they then resided on the Isle of Skye prior to emigrating to Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. Wilhelmina died 11 Mar 1887 Ontario, Canada; age 78 thus, born c 1809. Source: Kintail Parish, Ross County (now Inverness County) 1829 Married on the 13th May, William Anderson residing at Lienassie to Menie Oliver housekeeper there. Banns served and fees paid. >From the obituary of her first born son James, it states the following: Mr. Anderson was born in Ross-Shire Scotland, on Nov 22, 1829, being the son of Wm. Anderson, a Dumfriesshire man, his mother before her marriage being Miss Wilhelmina Oliver, of Hawick. Children: James, William, John, Elizabeth, George, Thomas and Joan. Possible relatives: Thomas OLIVER, Robert OLIVER; possibly related to the SCOTT and/or LITTLE families. Any brick removed would be most grateful. Lynn San Jose, CA

Dear Listers, I am primarily searching the BRACK line, and RUTHERFORD too. There are very few BRACK's in the counties of Roxburgh and Berwick and I strongly believe that all the BRACK's are more likely to be related in some way. The old family bible lists William BRACK either born in 1741 or 1744 (can't clearly read the date) in Grubbitt Law, Roxburgh. He was supposedly baptized in the Parish of Morebattle, but unfortunately the records are missing from 1736 to 1760. William married Elisaabeth (Betty) RUTHERFORD who was born in Faummerton in December 15, 1756 and baptized in the Parish of Linton. They were married in June 26, 1777 in Clinkamin in the Parish of Sprouston. William and Betty lived in Lempitlaw and had ten children, out of them five died in childhood and are buried in the Parish of Sprouston Cemetery. William worked as a Steward (probably Land Steward) and died July 20, 1812 and is buried with his five children. Through his life, his five surviving children went on to marry. Some married in Scotland and some in Quebec, these three children married in Scotland. Isabella BRACK, oldest daughter born December 15, 1780 in Greenhead, married Adam AINSLIE. Marriage date and place unknown. They had six children and came to Canada in 1829 and settled in Granby Quebec. John BRACK, born February 21, 1786, in Greenhead, married Janet HENDERSON (born about 1785) they were married December 10, 1813 in Ancrum, Roxburgh. They had three children in Scotland, came to Quebec Canada in 1819 and had three children in Quebec. Agnes BRACK, born April 1, 1788, in Greenhead, married Peter McLEAN June 24, 1810 (born 1782) in Crailing, Roxburgh. They had at least one daughter named Agnes born in 1812 and probably other children. They came to Canada in 1817. After the death of William BRACK, his wife Betty and their son Alexander, along with Betty's Brother William RUTHERFORD and his family came to Canada aboard the PROMPT in 1817. William RUTHERFORD's wife was Agnes HALL. They had four children William Robert, Janet and Isabella. Prior to coming to Canada William had lived in Primsede Mill, Roxburgh. If you have a BRACK in your line I would love to hear from you. Terribly sorry about my long rambling post! Kathleen BROCK Edmonton, AB
Just adding to the brickwall postings. I have Thomas Wedderburn married Jane ? circa 1808 (Found reference to a Thomas Wedderburn and a Jane Crozier in the Lamberton Toll marriage index but haven't proved the connection as yet) Their children were David Wedderburn born cira 1808 Spittal and Peter Wedderburn born 1811 Spittal. I've traced David, but lost his brother Peter as well as his parents. Can find no other trace of them. They don't seem to have followed David into Northumberland so can only assume the stayed north of the border. So, if the name WEDDERBURN is familiar with anyone on this list, no matter how small a reference, I would love to hear from you. Cheers Gayle New Zealand
Hi all; My brick wall is pretty solid at this point--no chinks in the morter even yet!! :o) I have a HALLIDAY family in Dumfries, more specifically Sanquhar. However, despite there being many HALLIDAYs in the area, none seem to be mine. I have a KETLEY (various spellings) that no one seems to have in this area (some in England) I am looking for Richard HALLIDAY, wife/commonlaw (don't know for sure) Jean (Jane?) KETLEY (also spelt KETLAY, KETLAW, KEIGHTLEY, and likely other variations!). Richard and Jean had at least two children: Agnes, born 1843, and Archibald, born 1847. Jean remarried (or living commonlaw with someone else?) to a Maurice WELSH, and had a son with him during 1851; George. In the 1881 census George WELSH is the head of the family, Jean KEIGHTLEY is listed as his mother, Agnes HALLIDAY (daughter from first marraige/commonlaw) is listed as sister, and Janet HALLIDAY is listed as Agnes,s daughter. I have not been able to find Richard HALLIDAY at all, birth, living, or death records, except for his name on his two children's parish records, and name on his son's marraige certificate. Jean later had a daughter, Margaret, born (1884) that carried her surname of KETLEY. Archibald moved to England before 1871, and was a soldier at Chelsea Barricks in the 1871 census. He married later that year, to Harriet HUBBARD, and spent the next 10 years living in Suffolk (Lowestoft), or Chelsea. His youngest child is born in the Oulton, Suffolk workhouse. His wife and three children are living in the workhouse in the 1881 census, but no sign of Archibald at all. In fact a couple kind people have checked the 1881 census, but could find no Archibald HALLIDAY anywhere that seemed to fit the bill. He is buried in Lowestoft, with a death date in the 1900's. No idea where he went in the interim. Perhaps he returned to Scotland??? Any leads for this family would be greatly appreciated. Take care, Cindy Gilbert Sylvan, Ontario, Canada
Kate, where would we look for this Ulster Plantation list? ----- Original Message ----- From: Gordon and Linda Beckett <boglelodge@a-znet.com> To: <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 25 August 2000 18:32 Subject: Post your brick walls Hello Listers, My brick wall(s)are the family of my grgr grandfather Thomas HALL and his wife Janet HENDERSON. We have been unable to find their marriage along with any baptisms of their 8 children. My brother has looked at LDS films for Oxnam and Morebattle without success. Last week I was looking at the LDS film for Southdean in the hope that I had tracked them down, but to no avail. They were more than likely Presbyterians, but I do not know where to find their records. I have been unable to find them on the OPR's on Scots Origins. Thomas HALL was baptised at Birdhopecraig Presbyterian, NBL 8/2/1801 son of John and Betty HALL of Cottonshopeburnfoot, NBL. Janet HENDERSON was born 17 Nov 1800 at Belford Mill, Morebattle, ROX., daughter of Adam and Janet HENDERSON. Our next sighting is the 1841 census for Oxnam, Hindebank-Townfoot, ROX. with four of their children (John,10, Janet, 4, George, 3 and Betty, 6 months, all born Oxnam) and a servant Janet SCOTT aged 75, Oxnam. The 1851 census for Oxnam, Phaup, gives Thomas's birthplace as Elsdon, NBL, (the parish he was born in)working as a Shepherd, along with his wife. At home were children, William, 16, Shepherd, Janet, 14, Scholar, George,12, Scholar, Elizabeth, 11, Scholar, Isabella, 9, Scholar and Thomas, 7 along with Elizabeth TELFER, 19, House Servant, Oxnam. In 1841, both William and my gr grandfather Adam, 8, were with relatives at Morebattle, Kelsocleugh, and in 1851 Adam and John were with relatives at Morebattle, Corbett House. The death cert. for Thomas gives no relevant information. Adam's wedding and death certificates cannot shed any more light. Are there any indexes for Scotland similar to the GRO indexes in England? How can they be accessed? Does the Scottish Record Office release Birth certs. if you only know the year your ancestors were born? Any help or clues will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Gil. Hall. Hello, I'm glad that some interest has finally been sparked off- where were you all? Here's where I am stuck: Thomas Runciman born 1791? in Berwickshire/ East Lothian. Married Mary Ridpath in Innerwick 1812. He was noted to be at Newbigging as a hind on two of his children's birth records. I know my problem would be on it's way to being solved if SKS would check the 1841 and 1851 censuses for me to find out where they were. His children were: Catherine Runciman c. 10-10-1813 in Oldhamstocks, m. 17-2-1837 in Coldingham to Ninian Carre. Thomas Runciman c. 21-5-1816 in Coldinham William Runciman c. 16-4-1828 in Coldstream m. 10-12-1850 in Ohio, USA Mary Runciman c.8-5-1821, Innerwick m. 22-3-1850 to John Wood in Coldstream Jean Runciman c. 8-5-1821, Innerwick m. 30-5-1844 to George Smith in Chirnside John Runciman c. 25-10-1818 in Innerwick m. 7-2-1840 in Ladykirk to Isobel Palmer (Pilmuir) I would be greatful if someone could check the 1841 census for John Runciman and isobel palmer in berwickshire- Ladykirk, and the 1851 one. Also my brickwall is findin where thomas runciman and Mary Ridpath were. Newbigging seems to crop up n the birth records so I don't know if he can be found on the censuses of the two farms- Newbigging and Newbigging Walls for 1841 and 1851? Please, please, please can someone have alook for me??? I am certainly hitting that wall hard now. Thank you and best of luck with your own searches, Alethea
