Hi! I have just joined your list and am hoping some SKS can help me locate my grandfathers birth and death, according to the 1881 census he was born in Carlisle 1877. His name is Henry Lawrence MORLEY son of John MORLEY b.c.1837 and Mary ?. Henry married Mary (Millie) Scott POTTS from Sorbie, Wigtown 1903. My father John William MORLEY b. sept 1906 was orphaned 1916-19 and sent to the Royal Caledonian School, Bushey, Herts. The school cannot find my fathers records so there are no clues from there. I do have some other people to look for which I will post later if I may but I dearly want to find out more about my fathers family as he didn't know much about his father either. Thanking you all in anticipation Helen Weddell Researching; POTTS + SCOTT + MORLEY = Wigtown, Glasgow, Carlisle, Leeds & Leamington Spa SCOTT + CARDY + GLASS + WEDDELL = Scottish Borders, Worcs & Lancs HOLTON + NUNN + L'ESTRANGE = S. dear listers, ...thanks to some very kind souls out there i have some limited information on what appears to a single family in the northumberland area. ...i have a marriage for micheal larwood and mary elcoat c 1799, newcastle-upon-tyne. ...i have an 1881 census listing for the household of a widow mary larwood: mary larwood w 68 F Spittal, Northumberland, Eng head michael larwood u 28 M Blyth, Northumberland, Eng son, labourer and a domestic servant, elizabeth cooper (53, blyth) ...do these individuals show up on any other easily accessible role? (tax, census, etc?) ...if not, what would be the suggestions of this group for attempting to ascertain where the original michael came from? and perhaps his trade? ...i would assume he came from the norfolk area, but it seems that the larwoods are a particularly common name there...and well, quite frankly, norfolk is large enough to hold a good many more than i can sort through one by one... :) ...any tricks of the trade i might make use of to find the family of micheal sr...? ...please, and thanks. ...HSBF!!! -xXx- mona larwood
Looking for any information and or connections to/ about this family, please. Thomas McDonald SUDDENS (b c 1836 in Edinburgh) and his wife Jane Martha WOODLAND (chr 1837 in Sunderland) I have some details of these two (Jane's family and Thomas' and what they got up to in NZ) but cannot find their marriage in early 1850's in Sunderland,England according to their death certs in NZ.. I have looked in the GRO and the IGI under SUTTON. SIDDENS, SIDDONS SYDDENS etc but no joy so maybe they weren't married or maybe elsewhere but have covered Scotland as well looking for Thomas' siblings and no luck. Children: Jane cannot find her birth, again looked GRO etc,(should be about 1854) came to New Zealand with parents and brother Robert in 1859 Margaret and Robert (GRO shows born 1856 and they did not come to NZ so presumably died young or stillborn) Agnes born 1857 died 1858 Robert born 1858 came to NZ in 1859 Other names in Janes family include WINTERSGILL and KILVINGTON. Thanks for reading all this and for any help Rochelle Suddens
I wasn't the one requesting the Newbigging list but you located my direct ancestor...Nichol Wetherston and Isabella. I had not yet tried to find them as I already had his parents but saved me some time. Thanks. Chris Johnson
>Does anyone on this list have access to the 1851 census, or perhaps have an >index of it? I am looking for ROBERTSON family, SCOTT family, CLEGHORN or >SHORT family names. Any help at all would be so very much appreciated. Dawn, >in southern CA > Sadly, only the 2% extract of the 1851 census is readily available in a computer-readable form, and as you'll know from recent messages, it's a hit or miss business whether your area was one that got selected (e.g. there's only 2 books for Whitsome, they picked the one I'm not interested in). The only way is to search the 1861 is by going through the films, and that's something you can do yourself if you have a LDS centre near you. HOWEVER, none of these names is rare, and Robertson is very common indeed, so you can't assume that all the people with that name are related. You would need to provide (or have) much more info (location, forenames, etc) than you've given here before a search became practical. Lesley Robertson
I wondered if someone would check the 1881 census for me for the farms of Newbigging and Newbigging Walls in Lauder, Berwickshire? I would like to know who was living there at the time please. Thank you very much, Alethea.
My family and I are planning a trip to Scotland, with the idea in mind that I can do some firsthand researching. My gr-gr-gr-grandparents were marrried in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, and I have found births registered and listed in autobiographies in Bowden, Earlston, and Roxbury. Is anyone familiar with the Borders and their seasons, et.al. Since I want to use my air miles, we won't be traveling during the peak season (Jun-Sept). Also, I have arthritis and cold/wet affects all my joints adversely. What are other good seasons for traveling in Scotland? Are there any left <Grin>? Can a "fur-renner" like me get into libraries, record centers, etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hello Margaret, My wife and I spent several days in the Borders area in 1999 right at the end of May. The weather was very pleasant and everything was a lush green. We spent a total of 29 days on vacation and drove throughout both Scotland and England. I would say that from May 15 forward would give you fairly warm weather and you will miss the big crowds that begin arriving about mid June. You will need to plan to drive or take a bus from one of the major cities because there is no train service to the Borders area. The Borders History Society has a research room in Galashiels. If you are interested I will get you the address. If you want to visit there you will need to plan, because they have limited hours. We drove all over Scotland, except the far north, and the Borders is probably the most beautiful. Rolling hills and green, green, green. Does anyone on this list have access to the 1851 census, or perhaps have an index of it? I am looking for ROBERTSON family, SCOTT family, CLEGHORN or SHORT family names. Any help at all would be so very much appreciated. Dawn, in southern CA

Hello all, my brick wall has been my Martin side of things. I have Michael Martin marriage to Margaret Burk in Galashiels in 1855. There parents were Andrew Martin and Mary (Morrey) both from Kilbred parish Ireland and Richard Burk and Ann (Shandley) both from Killgliver county Mayo Ireland. My problem lies with I can not find death certificates for any of them. I can not find any more births of other children that might be brothers or sisters to Michael or Margaret. Any one with any ideas or information greatly appreciated. Regards Mary Walker
I haven't posted for a while. Have been trying to find a direct link between the two spellings DUMMA/DIMMA. I have a lot of Dumma and Dimma names from the UK and Germany. Has anyone made any connections between them? I have James DUMMA married Helen HAY Oct. 30, 1818 in Eccles, Berwick, Scotland. He was born 1790 in Kelso and she was born about 1800. They had 7 known children: Adam b. May 18, 1819, Stitchel, Roxburgh Jane b. Aug. 11, 1821, Stitchel Janet b. Nov. 22, 1823, Stitchel William b. June 7, 1826, Stitchel John b. Aug. 14, 1829, Stitchel d. June 12, 1889 Edinburgh Helen b. ? Isabella b. 1836, Coldstream, Berwick I also have many descendants that are too numerous to list here. Does anyone have any information on James &/or Helen's parents? I'll be very grateful if you do. Shirley Dumma Madeira Park, B.C. Canada sdumma@dccnet.com
I've just discovered I had the KAK worm virus. (have cleaned it now) I realize that this mailgroup has a virus "firewall" but if anybody has received an off list message from me please do a search for *.kak. If you find this file go to http://www.cc.ukans.edu/~acs/virus/kak.shtml. They explain how to clean it. I apologise for inadvertantly sending a virus. Apparently this is a nonclick email attachment activated by date. Worse, I ran PC-cillan and it was not picked up. Sorry Gayle
Hi, Was wondering if anyone has a copy of the Scottish Genealogist - September 1980 - and if they could be kind enough to check something out for me. I found a ref. to my GGGGrandfather in the National Library (New Zealand) the source being the above magazine - would love to know in what context he was written about. John HISLOP born 1821, Edinburgh Thanks in anticipation. Pam
I don't know if I am in the right list for Wigtownshire. If I am not please let me know what list to subscribe to. My surnames are--BONE and MILROY. I have a marriage between Thomas BONE and Margaret MILROY on 16 Nov 1825 at Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire. Do these names ring any bells? Jean Rush jeanrush@ccinet.ab.ca

My brickwalls lay between: 1) Henry Brough OLIVER and his parents 2) Sarah Jane BELL and her parents I received the following marriage information re: my ggg grandparents from the Carlisle Record Office: "The index to Brampton marriages records that Henry Brough Oliver, bachelor of Brampton and Sarah Bell (whose mother Jane was her guardian) were married by licence on 22 October 1798. In addition the marriage licence bond records that: Henry was a gentleman; Sarah was a minor of Brampton; the bondsman was Thomas Bell, innkeeper who swore that Jane Bell was Sarah's mother." Also, where would I be able to find any books about Brampton that would cover this time period? Also, can sks educate me in the terms "marriage by licence" , "marriage licence bond"&"bondsman" in the above context? Thanks, Walter Lee Edmonton, Alberta Canada
