Trying again for Gilbert BURN from about Yetholm and Elenor (Ellen)YOUNGER, probably from Wooler, who married in Carham in 1796, came to Australia before 1833, married their daughter Jane to Alexander MACINTYRE in Sydney and then vanished from the Australian records. They had two other children, names as yet unfound. We haven't found then back in the UK; perhaps they returned to the Borders? With apologies for this repetition to those people who have already been helpful but this is our brickwall. John Edmonds Moriac Vic. Australia

Hi Anna, I have Cairns in those areas. My Janet Cairns was born about 1805 in ?? Berwickshire, she married George Aitchison 1822 Greenlaw, her father was Thomas, she had a brother Alexander, also I think, a sister Catherine and Alison. Anything sound like a connection. Ruth Edwards

Hi Ann, Thought I would also answer to the list as I know others are on this name. The name Alison also got my attention. I have a James Watherston, died 28 Jul 1800, 76y in Greenlaw and his wife Alison Brack, died 23 Mar 1806, 79y from Greenlaw MI's. Only son I have is Nicol born 1752 and marries Janet Fairbairn, 29 Nov 1783, Longformacus. Now, of his children are James,1787, thomas,1791, and Nicol, 1793. As you see, an Alison fits very nicely in abt 1789 esp the name. If your Gardiner down line has any Nicols in it since it is somewhat less common, I think we are on to something. Let me know what you think. Chris Johnson
Hello Borders Listers. I think that there may be a problem with the Peebles-Shire list. I think that in some way the site is DOWN. Being a newbie to rootsweb.lists I do not know what I should do next. My ownly thought at the moment is to copy my listing to Peebles-shire list to the Borders list and keep my fingers crossed. There is a second listing to follow. Subject "Robertson". Hello Peebles listers This is my first time on this list. I am looking for contact with some kind soul who may be able to help me to find more of my g.grandfather's family. He is ROBERT CLEGHORN b. Peebles 1826, the son of ALEXANDER CLEGHORN the veteran of Waterloo, who was at one time Burgh Officer in Peebles, and ANN RODGERS. At the time my grandfather William Wallace Cleghorn was born in 1880, and on census night 1881, Robert and his family were living in school Brae, Peebles. ALEXANDER CLEGHORN was born in Drumelzier in 1782, and at that time his family had been living in Drumelzier for several generations. I have managed to find seven other children born to his parents and I would now like to find out who they married and who their descendants are. The parents of Alexander are JAMES CLEGHORN and JEAN WATERS. In the OPR I have found many other references to the CLEGHORN(E) name which occured in Broughton, Dolphinton, Eddleston, Innerleithen, Manor, Newlands, Skirling, Stanhope, Stobo, Traquair, West Linton, and a number of other places which I have not yet found on a map. Some of these references go back to the very early 1700s, and even earlier. I would like to establish whether or not these records are of one extended family or whether these records are of a more distantly related "Clan". Is there any out there willing to help or guide this KIWI in his search for his Scottish roots. I will be pleased to hear from anyone. If you have enquiries you would like done in New Zealand in return for help given, then give me a try. I will help if I can. Regards to all from Greg Blackburn in Paekakariki, New Zealand

Hello Peebles listers, This is my first time on this list. I am looking for contact with some kind soul who might be able to help find my g.grandmother. She MARY HUNTER ROBERTSON. She is the daughter of GEORGE ROBERTSON and ISABELLA BEATTIE. She was born, 1939 in Selkirk(this on 1881 sensus). She married ROBERT CLEGHORN in Innerleithen on 13 Dec 1861. She spent nearly all her married life in Peebles where she died 25 Nov 1898. Her father had died before her marriage day, but her mother was still alive. One of the witnessess to the marriage was George Robertson, who may have been a brother or a cousin. This is all the information I have about Mary. I have been trying to progress research on this female line of my ancestory for over three years now with nothing to show except for what was found when I found my g.grandfather. I will be pleased to hear from anyone. If you have enquiries you would like done in New Zealand in return for help given, then give me a try. I will help if I can. Hi Greg, Seeing the distinctive name CLEGHORN, I've been tempted many times to tell you that there is a well known photographer in Cardiff with this name. I know that this is a modern connection, but it may lead you to other avenues of research or fill in a few unexplained gaps. Mark Cleghorn, 374, Cyncoed Road, Cardiff. Tel. 029 2076 6800. It's the only Cleghorn listed in the central south Wales June 2000 phone book. Hello folks, I'm a little late with the 'Brick Wall' theme...but, better late than never. We are really stuck with my 4G-gfather, William PATERSON, who was one of the first settlers to Tasmania in 1804. We know a lot about his Australian history and where he married his second wife. The issue is that we do not know where in the UK he was born (we do know he was born ca 1754). Travelling to Tasmania with him was an adult daughter, Janet PATERSON, who was born ca 1784 (mother unknown). Janet's birthyear predates the second marriage for William (1803, London). The early history of our William PATERSON has stumped generations of our family researchers, including myself, for many years. This is a situation where we have very little information to work with in order to determine William's origins. One of my research activities is to see whether potential candidates can be ruled out. My 3G-gfather (a Tasmanian-born son of William) married Mary COSSAR, who hailed from Duns. We have established Mary COSSAR's origins without question, yet Mary's appearance in Tasmania is a mystery unto itself (but, that's another story). One hypothesis that may explain the origins of William, and the mysterious appearance of Mary COSSAR in Tasmania, is that our William PATERSON knew the COSSAR family back in "the old country". Hence, to test the validity of such a theory I have the following query. From the Scottish OPR indexes I note the baptism of a Janet PATERSON to a William PATERSON and Elizabeth PURVES on 2 May 1784 at Eyemouth, BEW. While I cannot find the relevant notes, I recall that this same couple had another child (a son, possibly John??) baptized in 1774 at Ayton, BEW. Does anybody on this list have knowledge about the above PATERSONs from Eyemouth and Ayton?? If so, I would dearly like to learn of the details. If there is a known story and conclusion to the lives of the above individuals from Eyemouth/Ayton...then I can scratch them from my list of candidates. Any assistance/information dealing with those PATERSON baptisms would be immensely valuable for our family's research. TIA, and best regards to all. Hello Rob, On Tue, 5 Sep 2000 you wrote: > John Paton and Alison Trotter married in Edinburgh 29th March 1804. > Alison daughter of William Trotter a mason of Berwick > They had at least on son, Peter in 1818 > > I think > Alison was born in Duns, Berwick on 4th April 1782 > Parents William Trotter and Elizabeth 'Betty' Henderson > Other children Peter 1778, Janet 1780, Thomas 1784, William 1786, > Betty 1788, Margaret 1793 and Jean 1796 all born in Duns. It took me a little time to find them for you. However, from the Duns parish register there are the following entries for the above family: ----------------------------- (The following from OPR 735/4 pp. 26) 1. SINTON, Wm TROTTER ----------------------------- I noticed that there is an IGI entry for Alison TROTTER born 4 April 1802. I did not see such an entry in the registers, and realised that the IGI entry is merely a Patron submittal. Hence, it is likely the Patron Submittal is in error. Along that line, I notice that the 1778 entry for Peter TROTTER is a Patron Submittal. This is another entry that I did not see in the register. I must point out, though, that the parish register for that time period is a little messy. Hence, I may have missed the baptism entry for Peter. It would seem that there are some interesting things that may develop for you, if these entries are your family. First, William TROTTER's occupation is consistently listed as Mason. From that, it seems to me there's a good chance the Alison at marriage is the same person as the Alison baptized Duns 1782. Second, I notice from the IGI that James SINTON was married to a Jean TROTTER. Coincidence?? Third, there were various other entries in the register for children of a Peter TROTTER...and another entry for a Peter TROTTER, son of John. I'll let you figure these out <grin> Actually, if you are interested in these - let me know. I hope this helps. Hello Listers Somewhere in the deep dark recesses of time there glimmers a faint spark of memory, which tells me I found a website where I read about the forth comming publication of a book Titled "THE BARONY OF CLEGHORNE". That is not the full title of the book, there was a date in there was well. 1260 or 1206 or something like that. An email address was given so that those who had an interest in the Family Name could enquire about pricing and delevery. That has to be all of 3 years ago. I have forgotten the location of the website, the email I sent has bounced back, and I don't know what to do next. Is there anyone on the list who has any knowledge of this publication. If it is available I would appreciate, a website, an email address, or full title, author and sbn number, which ever is easiest. Thank you in advance all help is appreciated.
