This is the second time of posting this - I think I had the wrong address. Hi folks. This is my first time on this list. I have a little piece of family history written in October 1969 by one of my ancestors. It states that George ALLISON born 1831 (place unknown)(my gggrandfather)came from Berwick-on-Tweed. He was the son of a grammar school headmaster who held a University degree. George went to London and became a civil servant working in Somerset House. This is as far back as I can get on George's side of the family. I know he married Julia Augusta WHITWORTH in London and I have gone back another two generations on her side of the family. Is anyone out there able to recognise anything from this scant piece of information that may put me on the right track to locate maybe his birth or even his father? THANK YOU. Cheers Wendy NEW ZEALAND Researching:ALLISON,JONES,SETREE,TEAGUE

Hi all, had this message sent from my brother... it looks like the scam is ongoing as I saw a similar message when working at Zeneca last year...be careful... Chris Subject: Security Message I have had the following information sent through to me. Just to make everybody aware in case we get any of these types of call... ARTICLE FROM THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NEWSLETTER Telephone scams > We have been informed of the following scam, which is targeting females in particular. They received a phone call from the PostOffice asking them to confirm their company postcode. When this is given, they are told that they have become eligible for some gift vouchers for their co-operation and are asked to provide their home address and postcode in order to receive the vouchers. So far 90% of the women who have provided this information have been burgled as it is assumed that their homes are empty during office hours. The police are aware of this scam and the Post Office have confirmed that they are NOT conducting postcode surveys. Also, it has been reported if you receive a telephone call from an individual who identifies himself/herself as being an AT & T Service Technician who was conducting a test on that telephone line, or anyone else who asks you to do the following don't. They will state that to complete the test the recipient should touch nine, zero, then hash (90) and then hang up. To do this gives full access to your phone line, which allows them to place a long distance international or chat-line calls billed to your account. The information which the police have, suggests that many of these calls are emanating from local jails and prisons. The information has been checked out by th police and is correct DO NOT PRESS 90 FOR ANYONE.

The IGI is pretty reliable in this time period as the data is taken from the BMDs, but it only goes up to 1875. I imagine that this indicates that James was a younger child as he doesn't appear (I also searched for "James son of Robert" and only got 2 very early 18th century boys). Hello- I am new to the list but Alistair encouraged me to jump in and ask my questions-so here it goes. I am looking for any info on James Donaldson from Midlem, Scotland and his family around 1756-1794, or so. He and his family immigrated to America around 1794-1797. His son John lived in Earlston, Scotland before immigrating with his family (mother, father, 2 brothers). If anyone has any info, I so look forward to hearing from you!! Kaye Donaldson-Asbill

Hello again Listers: I know that my g. grandfather William Turner ARNOTT was killed 29 June 1900 whilst trying to put a railway engine back on the tracks at Stanhope Bridge, near Broughton during the construction of the TALLA WATER WORKS - the engine rolled over and crushed him to death. At the time he worked for a Mr. John BEST, a general contractor from Edinburgh who took over the construction work of the Talla Reservoir on 27 January 1900. What I am trying to find out is where and when William Turner ARNOTT worked prior to 1900. In 1888, he worked as a coalminer (recorded on his marriage certificate to Alison SOMMERVILLE). Further anecdotal information received today, indicates that he was present when they sank the Polton and Rosewell pits. On the 1888 marriage certificate, Williams father, James Turner ARNOTT is listed as an engine keeper. If William worked with his father, this might explain the anecdotal information of his being there when they sank the aforementioned pits -- working the engines used to drive down the shafts. My question to these lists is: 1) where can I obtain records of the history of the above-mentioned coal pits to pin-point when they were sank. Thanks Jim Arnott Victoria, BC, Canada c:\famtree\arnott\8wtarnot\pithis1.doc

Has someone worked up the complete genealogy of the "Halls of Dunglass"? I have some bits of information from various books, but haven't been able to find a complete listed source of this prominent and interesting family that lived in Cockburnspath with an estate along the coast reaching down to St Abb's Head region. The Halls of Dunglass started with Sir John Hall, 1st Baronet (1687), a wine merchant and Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who lived at Craigcrook Castle, then moved to his new estate at Cockburnspath. I have gleaned some information from a recent book by Sally Smith: "Cockburnspath". Please contact me direct if you can be of assistance.
