    3. Hi Vicki, It is very definite that the Rutherfords from the Borders, certainly moved to other parts of the world over the last 300 years. Only my Great Grandfather,George Rutherford arrived here in 1890 and later his younger brother, James Oliver Rutherford arrived 1906/7. It is quite possible that other family members may have emigrated to Australia, Canada, USA or other parts of N.Z. Dianne Dixon, NZ.

I don't know how often it was originally published, but the 1866 edition was re-published by the Borders Regional Council in 1990 (isbn 0951675605). In it, the publishers mention that their first edition was 10 years before. Apart from frequent mention of the activities of this Kelso branch of the firm (and pages of wonderful adverts), it gives gazetteer-type info on each town and village in Berwickshire, Selkirkshire and Roxburgh, then adds lovely info such as lists of businesses, registered voters, amenities (number of shops, library, inns, etc). I've never seen new it in the shops, but it does turn up in the second hand book shops. Lesley Robertson

    1. Margaret Ann SMITH
    2. Howard Davies
    3. My grandmother Margaret Ann SMITH was born on 4 November 1859 at Chapel Street Berwick, together with a twin sister Mary Jane. Her mother was Ann nee HINDMARSH and her father was named as William SMITH, Police Officer. In the 1861 Census mother and daughters were still at Chapel Street but the father was elsewhere. The next trace of Margaret was in Walworth, London in 1883 when she married my grandfather William DAVIES, giving her father's name as James SMITH, Police Constable. No marriage certificate has been found. No record of PC William (James) SMITH's service has come to light, though he was not one of the three police constables in Berwick around 1859, nor did he serve in the Metropolitan Police. Nor is anything known of Ann or Mary Jane's whereabouts after 1861, or of Margaret's until her marriage in 1883. If any of these names ring a bell I should be glad to know please or for any ideas for tracing them. Howard Davies

    3. Thankyou everyone for the help and suggestions posted. I have certainly taken note of these. Hello Russell, New Zealand, It is great to talk to someone else researching Rutherfords from the borders. Yes, we may be related back in Scotland. I am not immediately related to the North Canterbury Rutherfords, or the Rutherfords from Nelson, but perhaps back in the Borders region in the 1800's. First of all I live in Christchurch and my maiden name was Rutherford. I have been researching my family history since 1981. My G.Grandfather, George Rutherford,b 17-11-1863, Edinburgh arrived in Lyttelton 1890. His parents were James Rutherford,b16-7-1837 Galashiels, Selkirk and Susannah Boyd, b c1841 Ayr. These teo were married 16-4-1861. James parents were Robert Rutherford and Betsy Oliver. Their children were :- Robert b c1829, Thomas b c 1830, John b c 1832, George b 5-1-1834 Maxton, James b 16-7-1837 Galashiels, Oliver b5-1-1844 Selkirk and Helen b 7-2-1846 Selkirk. My research is concentrated on Robert and Betsy. It is puzzling that the birth registrations of their last four children are also recorded at Cavers. Did they originally come from Cavers?. The information on the town Rutherford etc came from Gary Harding. Regards, Dianne Dixon, New Zealand.

There was another son George b.1851 who married a girl from Manchester Emily Ellen Smith b. 1849, he had already moved to Lancashire in 1881. 3. Hello, I am trying this for a third time. I am very new to the use of this web site. To Gary, thankyou for the information on the town Rutherford and the family history. It was just great. I am currently researching for the deaths of my 3x G.Grandfather, Robert Rutherford, b 1805 Maxton and his wife Betsy Oliver, born 1807, Jedburgh. They were still alive in 1874 when their son Oliver got married in Edinburgh to Mary Marston. I am trying to find them on the 1871 census.I have also been unable to trace their marriage which would have been in the late 1820's in Roxbourghshire. Their Grandson, George Rutherford, came out to New Zealand in 1889/90 and settled in the port of Lytellton in the South Island. His father was James Rutherford, 5th child of Robert and Betsy ( Elizabeth ). Has anyone come across this family from Roxburghshire ? Dianne Dixon, New Zealand.

These are large photocopies and are detailed enough to all individual houses to be seen. The same maps are on line at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ from where they can be downloaded in sections, free.
