Hello Listers, I'm looking for help in identifying a cemetery in Jedburgh. It is situated above the town, overlooking the Abbey. It is adjacent to a building that looks like a castle, but was actually a jail. If anyone knows the name of this cemetery, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Thank you, Jim Richardson
Is it possible to obtain a copy of the above census ? I have heaps of rels from this area but with a name like Oliver, & to make matters worse they all share the christian name of Adam. kind regards Peter.
Hello Dianne Only one Rutherford stone, which reads a bit curiously 14. James Storie spouse to James Rutherford 9/11/1728 53 years. son James Rutherford d. 11/3/1721 5 yrs. No Boyds. There are a couple of Olivers, again in C18. The MIs are for the Old Churchyard and there are only 66 stones recorded. Do you think the family could have moved to Cavers after the birth of the fourth child? The Selkirk parish records record the baptisms of five Laidlaw children who were born and baptised in other parishes, following their return to Selkirkshire. Margaret

Hello Peter: Afraid I cant tell you anything about your HUNTERs. However, as you ask about one of Gods Little Green Acres (In my humble opinion), I thought Id take a moment to draw a few points of interest to your attention. Hi Margaret& Listers: Question of the day<G>. While searching Scots Origins website last night, I found what I originally thought was a duplicate. BUT, Mungo Young appears to have married Margaret Henderson in Eckford, Roxburghshire in March of 1791 and then turned around and was also married in Gordon, Berwick the following month. Can anyone think of what may have caused this duplication in efforts? Meg Landseadel Staton

Hello List, I thought these list were not supposed to have advertisements. Ruth Edwards
I can't answer your question but I have a suggested alternative to transcibing. Instead of transcribing the will, it could probably be successfully photographed with a digital camera. I know a lady who uses one to record census entries from microfiche readers with excellent results. Of course, you do need a person with a digital camera to do it for you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trish LEWIS" <trishlewis@sprint.ca> To: <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2000 5:12 PM Subject: Request for assistance in transcribing will > Hi Everyone. > > Hope this isn't a faux pas asking this, but does anyone know of someone who > I could contact to transcribe a will for me at the Thomas Thomson House in > Edinburgh that wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg. > > I just received information from the Scottish Record Office that my > (5x)great grandfather Duncan SINCLAIR left a will and inventory, but they > can't photocopy it for me because the volume it is in is"unsuitable for > photocopying due to its physical condition". Hi Everyone. Hope this isn't a faux pas asking this, but does anyone know of someone who I could contact to transcribe a will for me at the Thomas Thomson House in Edinburgh that wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg. I just received information from the Scottish Record Office that my (5x)great grandfather Duncan SINCLAIR left a will and inventory, but they can't photocopy it for me because the volume it is in is"unsuitable for photocopying due to its physical condition". They said however I could make arrangements to view the book and transcribe it myself. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada, so it's impossible for me, but I'd like to hire someone to do it for me. If someone could contact me off list please with a name or two I would really appreciate it. I'm very anxious to see what this will has in it that may provide clues for me. Thank you. And I apologize to the list and list owner if I shouldn't have asked this through the list. Trish LEWIS Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia Canada trishlewis@sprint.ca

Dear Harold, Thanks for responding. I have an Agnes Smart SCOTT b. bet. 1875/1890 daughter of Robert SCOTT and Annie Mary GLASS. My Annie is reputed to have married Jack ORMROYD. As Agnes is such a common name I don't suppose for a minute that they are the same but I thought I would throw it into the pot as it is quite often the long shots that pay off. Dear Margaret, I read with interest your reply to Rod Smith as regards to the Cavers parish. I too have an interest in the Cavers parish. You mention that you have a copy of the MI's for this parish. Could I be a cheeky genealogist and ask you to look up and see if there are any Rutherfords and Boyds buried there when you have the time. My 3x G.Grandfather Robert Rutherford and his wife Betsy Oliver may possibly have lived there before the birth of their 4th child as the last 4 childrens births have been recorded at Cavers as well as in the Parishs of their actual births. I can't find the marriage of these two and it may be that their families originally come from this area. I find it very puzzling that the births of the last 4 children out of 8 altogether have had their births recorded in this way. Has anyone got any views on this. Thanking you, Dianne Dixon.
Does anyone out there have any information on the history of the Philiphaugh Estate, located just outside Selkirk. I am looking for details on its history and chronology of ownership. As an aside, I grew up at Philiphaugh Gardens in the 1950s and 60s but had no interest in estate history in my youth! Jim Arnott Victoria, BC, Canada
In reply to Barb. Andrew The M.I.s for Yarrow have:- Erected to the memory of ROBERT BRYDON who died at East Redfordgreen on 30 May 1847 aged 41 years, also of his son JOHN BRYDON who died at Redfordgreen on 1st Nov. 1844 aged 18 months: also of his son JOHN BRYDON who died at Redfordgreen on 2 June 1849 aged 4 years; also ISABELLA ANDERSON, his wife who died at Redfordgreen 14 May 1883 aged 70 years. These should be the parents of Elisabeth. Nearby is a stone for ROBERT BRYDON, late tenant in Easter Redfordgreen who died at Easter Buck-cleugh (sic) on 22 Dec. 1840 aged 82, and HELEN HALL, his spouse 8 Oct 1843 aged 73, and three children who died young. Possibly the parents of Robert, born 1806. Ithink this Robert, born 1758, is the son of WILLIAM BRYDON born 1718 and CHRISTIAN LINTON born 1729 . Theirs is the next gravestone and includes children ADAM, MARION, JAMES and WALTER. Their daughter AGNES and her husband JOHN PATTERSON (my 4xg grandparents) and two children are in the next grave. Let me know if you would like more details. Margaret Sullivan, Brisbane.
I am researching ancestors of families Sword and Douglas of Jedburgh, in particular John Sword Douglas, christened at Mervinslaw estate, near Jedburgh, in 1835, son of Andrew Douglas. Does anyone have information about this estate during the period 1835-1850? Also, any details of Sword family burial plot at Jedburgh would be appreciated Robyn rpcant@bigpond.com Australia
Re Rod Smith's query There is a "new" church and an old one at Cavers. I am sure I would never have found the old one without the help of Marjorie Gavin. In 1996 the churchyard was very overgrown, and no hope of finding my Lillico graves. I have a copy of the MIs for Cavers Old Churchyard, recorded in 1972 and obtained from St Mary's Mill at Selkirk, am happy to look up any names for you. Margaret Sullivan, Brisbane.
