    3. Hi Dianne and Brian! I can't help with the "hind" other than to say it also refers to a red female deer. However my ancestors are from Roxburgh also. My g g g grandfather is George RUTHERFORD who lived in Minto. In the birth record of his daughter, Helen on 3 Jan 1830, he is listed as a "farm steward". I suppose he was connected with one of the larger farms in Minto and as steward was in charge.Perhaps this is the occupation of your ancestor. If I am mistaken, please let me know. 3. Hi Dianne, A hind(or Hynd) was usually hired at the local hiring fair. He was a skilled farm worker, usually a ploughman, who was required to provide a women farm worker, often his wife or daughter. In return he recieved a home,a small garden for his use and a wage. I am researching in the same areas, have you seen the new "Maxton 2000" publication by Charles Denoon. I have just purchased and not finished reading it, ut it has two pages about Riddeltonhill, an estate in Maxton parish. Good luck in your search, Jane-Ellen Researching Handyside,Currie, Hardie and Hastie in the Maxton area. -----Original Message----- From: Brian & Dianne Dixon <bddixon@inet.net.nz> To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, October 20, 2000 8:36 PM Subject: Parish Records, Roxburghshire >Hi there, >I am currently reading a film covering the Lilliesleaf, Linton, Makerston and Maxton >Parish records, Roxburghshire. >The occupations for a lot of the men are listed as 'hind'. >Also, my 3 x G.Grandfather is listed as a steward at Riddletonhill. >Can anyone enlighten as to what these occupations were and can anyone help me find >Riddletonhill on the map. > >Thanking you,Dianne Dixon, >New Zealand. > > >==== BORDER Mailing List ==== >The Border Names Newsletter contact boglelodge@yahoo.com for details. >

    3. Hello Dianne: My Webster's Dictionary describes HIND as "a farm servant, esp. in parts of northern England and in Scotland." which is what I recall it meaning when I lived in the Borders in my youth.... and Webster's describes STEWARD as "a man employed... on a large estate to manage the domestic concerns, supervise servants, collect rents or income, keep accounts" On my UK OS survey maps , I could not find Riddletonhill but there is a small hamlet of Riddell near Lilliesleaf and it is not too much of stretch in imagination to conclude that there may well be a small hill nearby = Riddletonhill. As I have said at other times on this list, [UK] STREETMAP is a good tool to look for small map detail. For Riddell, see http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=352500&Y=625500&zoom=3 Regards Jim Arnott Victoria, BC, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian & Dianne Dixon" <bddixon@inet.net.nz> To: <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 20, 2000 8:48 PM Subject: Parish Records, Roxburghshire > Hi there, > I am currently reading a film covering the Lilliesleaf, Linton, Makerston and Maxton > Parish records, Roxburghshire. > The occupations for a lot of the men are listed as 'hind'. > Also, my 3 x G.Grandfather is listed as a steward at Riddletonhill. > Can anyone enlighten as to what these occupations were and can anyone help me find > Riddletonhill on the map. > > Thanking you,Dianne Dixon, > New Zealand. > > > ==== BORDER Mailing List ==== > The Border Names Newsletter contact boglelodge@yahoo.com for details. > >

I visited there quite a few years ago and the headstones were so black with lichen that they were unreadable. I wonder if anyone has found a way to decipher them. I am interested in the names Telfer, Telford and Bell who may have been buried in the Canonbie churchyard. Thankyou, Helen, Melbourne

    3. Hello All, I'm introducing myself as I am new to the list and to research in Scotland. I will listen and lurk and learn. My interest is in John Alexander CONNOCHIE, known as Jack, my father, and his parents, of whom the only one I know is his mother Mary K (Kathleen?), known as Min. I was adopted but dearly wish to do them deserved honour on my family tree. Both died and are buried in Leeds, West Yorkshire. John Alexander CONNOCHIE was married by 1956 to Amy formerly wife of George Hardy, lived in Leeds. son of:- Mrs Mary K CONNOCHIE was born 11 March in (calculated from age at death) 1892, and I believe came from Selkirk. I don't know her maiden name I only recall her mentioning Clan Cameron. In the late 1960's I had an Aunt Esmie in Kinlochleven, Highlands, and an uncle Ian CONNOCHIE who had the Queen's (or Royal) Hotel in Kirkcaldy, Fife. My granny Amy died while I was very young so I was brought up by Mary K. on porridge and haggis and neeps, (tasty) and frequently wore a kilt. That's me and mine, My Regards, Lynn Tennant in Sharlston, West Yorkshire

    1. Irregular Marriages & Cautioners? [RICHARDSON*STEWART*YOUNG]
    2. Margaret L Staton
    3. Hi Everyone: I just received some extracts of entries in OPR's from SCOTS Origins. I did read the information that someone had posted here (I think last month) on irregular marriages but would really appreciate it if SKS briefly explained once again the reasons marriages were deemed irregular. Was (as my hubby so quaintly puts it) "he-ing & she-ing" the only grounds, or would the fact that one or the other of the spouses was non-Scottish have been sufficient cause. Also there is a sentence in this exception that I can't fully decipher and would welcome suggestions. " The Session agreed upon their acknowledged [perment](sp?) of the irregularity to confirm their marriage & to continue there in the enjoyment of christian privilege." In a different marriage, appeared the following sentence: "William Young Weaver in Eckford-Mofs Cautioner for the Bridegroom & John Cranston in Eckford Caution for the Bride." First, I am guessing that "Mofs" means something. Is this the same as the double "s", and that this would then translate to Eckford-Moss? What would that be? Secondly, I think I can deduce what a "Cautioner" would be, but who exactly would be tapped to assume that role. Since the groom above is also a Young from Eckford, I would presume William was a relative. However, the bride was from Gordon in Berwick and her maiden name was Henderson. Would John Cranston merely be a parish member? Thanks for any input. Meg Landseadel Staton

    3. Hi Everyone. I just received the will of my g(x5) grandfather Duncan SINCLAIR who was a gardener at the Mellerstain Estate, husband of Christian TAIT. He did 1833. I discovered the following info on his children: Christian SINCLAIR married Thomas WRIGHT an Innkeeper in Edinburgh. Their issue was Christian (Christy) and Margaret. Janet SINCLAIR married John ANDERSON, a Mason in Kelso. Their issue was Christian, John, William, Jessie, George, Finlay and Margaret. Rachel SINCLAIR married Thomas MANDERSON in Edinburgh. Their issue was Christian, Margaret, Jessie and Rachel. Duncan's sons were John SINCLAIR, a gardener at Hackney in the County of Middlesex, and George, Nursery and Seedsman at the New Cross near London. Duncan could have had other grandchildren Finlay D. SINCLAIR, Jane SINCLAIR, Mary SINCLAIR, Sara SINCLAIR and Elizabeth SINCLAIR. Not know which belongs to John or to George. Duncan mentions an Uncle Duncan. Anyone recognize any of these names. I hope so. Thank you. Trish LEWIS Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia Canada
