    3. Thank you for your response. I am only now begining to scratch the surface of the RUTHERFORD family history. The furthest back I have yet gone is a birth entry in Minto, Roxburgh showing the birth of my gg grandmother, Helen Rutherford to her father George RUTHERFORD on 3 Jan 1830. It states he is a farm steward. His wife Mina EASTON may have been the " ladies maid of the Countess of Minto." I speculate George may have worked at the Earl's estate and farm (Earl Gilbert Elliot). George RUTHERFORD had a son John who owned a major firm in HAWICK: Turner, Rutherford & Co. Ltd.. Established in 1880, it survived almost 100 years as a hoisey factory with offices in London also. I know little of this John RUTHERFORD other than his date of birth: 3 May 1833. Hawick, by the way, is the nearest big town to Minto. Your Thomas may be a brother to my George Rutherford or cousin from the dates you offer. Again, please stay in touch and thank you for your interesting response.@ J Gregory Barron Atlanta, Georgia, USA ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris & Sheila Hale <cshale@home.com> To: <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 22, 2000 9:20 PM Subject: Rutherford's > I have a Thomas Rutherford b. est 1816/17 at Hawick who married > my GGAutn Christian Scott in 1843 at Yarrow Selkirk. 3. Hello again! I'm happy you received many positive responses. I am fasinated that we may have a match with your Robert RUTHERFORD, farm steward in Riddletonhill, and my 3X great grandfather George RUTHERFORD, farm steward in Minto! I read in just the previous post about naming patterns and the 4th son was to be named after the father's eldest brother! And according to you, Robert's 4th son is named GEORGE. Before I get carried away, do you know of your Robert's parents and siblings? I would be happy to learn more. I have reached the proverbial wall on this incredible line. My 3x G.Grandfather recordered as living at Riddletonhill as a steward in 1829 was Robert Rutherford at the birth of his eldest son called Robert. We have similiar names. It is easier to read from approximately 1750 onwards and goes through to 1854. This is because in any address there might be a couple of ADAMS and a SMITH. The new reader just does a better job of searching the data. 3. When searching the 1881 British Census, using viewer 2, I have found that when you look for a name in Lancashire A-J Disc 1. called Layfield, it tells you to put in Lancashire K-Z Disc 2, this is normal However using Viewer 3 with Disc 1 Lancashire A-J, and using the following simple instructions: 1) When the search screen appears cancel it 2) Click on Search 3) Click on Neighbours - Advances Query 4) You can use Boolean Logic Searches and put in Layfield up comes about 80 families, so maybe there are quite a few names listed on Disc I that cannot be accessed by using Viewer 2 This also applies to York Disc 1 & 2 Check it out if you have Viewer 3 Max in Australia

    3. I am seeking information on the "Crooks" name in the Border region. My G-G-grandfather, Robert Crooks was married to a Jane (Jean) Turnbull at Lilliesleaf, Roxb. on March 10, 1832. He was registered in nearby Ashkirk parish, but I have been unable to find any trace of the Crooks name in that area. She was registered as being from Lilliesleaf, and her family is quite well documented in that area. They arrived in Ontario, Canada about 1842, and according to Ontario census data, they apparently came to Canada via Ireland. Apparently, at least two of their children are recorded as being born in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated. Lloyd Crooks Winnipeg, Canada

    3. Now they are starting to roll in. Accepted until Friday Oct. 27 and then posted on the 28th and the 29th. Then shut down. Again, I cannot respond to any entries individually. Just trust that your's was read. Please send only a common English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh name with its derivatives to follow it. Do not just send a bunch of names with no suggestion of a relationship. Do not send modern alternatives like Babs for Margaret. Just send those that we would expect to find on the rolls of a hundred or more years ago. When "Fergy" named her daughter Beatrix [help me out here...I think that is correct], I thought what an awful name for a wee bairn. But then I had my head slapped silly when I learned that it was a derivative of Elizabeth, the Queen's Christian name. Go figure. You never stop learning something in this genealogy business. It has been noted that there are other sites with this very same task already at hand...that is a good point. The list I am trying to make is one which is more--personal--to each family. A popular URL was given to me to check out. The name George and Georgina were not on the list. So, where as there are lists, a blending of them all would need to be done to catch all the names. 2. Mike Simpson
    3. Hi Dianne, A Hind was a skilled farm servant, especially a married man having charge of two horses, i.e. normally a ploughman. It would be expected his wife would also work on the farm, in return for which they would be entitled to live in a farm cottage. A farm Steward was essentially a farm manager, responsible for the day to day running of the estate. Riddletonhill can be seen on the 1863 map of the area on the old-maps web site. Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10roxbu811/HTML/fs_81008001d.htm find Maxton about half way down the left margin of the map, then scroll right and you will come to Riddletonhill which appears to be an estate alongside the railway line. 1. Re: young - Geo., et all, ROX ~1849-
    2. Hi Linda, Glad to see you on the list. I've been out of the genealogy loop for a while, taking about a year hiatus, and saw your post. YOUNGs of ROX are vast, yet we may find a connection, somewhere, if we can push our proven lines back a couple generations. I've a George as younger brother to my great grandfather, William. My George YOUNG (b.1860,Markerston, ROX) was not the one listed in what I presume was Kay's 1880 (?) census post, in response to your query. Possible links to our lines in the given names, though, they are all common names of the generation and locale. Along with his other six siblings, my William also has a brother, Oliver (b.1855, Jed. ROX), and sister, Mary (b.1853, Jed). William's parents were James YOUNG & Janet ROBSON (m. 1842, Oxnam, ROX). Too early to tell if all these folks are linked, especially with Haddington possibly in your equation, but I've seen the tracks our predecessors made 'round the isles, and they could get around, so one never knows... I'll keep lurking, reading and see if I can provide more info or clues. Private emails to me, from other than AoL should be addressed to my yahoo addy, listed below. Have you access to search the IGI from the FHC site? http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchigi.asp Very helpful resource. G'Luck to ya & Happy hunting!
