Hi Tim, If you go to the old maps site at http://www.old-maps.co.uk and look for the county of Haddingtonshire, then Pencaitland in the index, you will be taken to a map of the Pencaitland area. If you scroll through the surrounding maps, you should find your Milnton. I had a quick look and only found a Wilton, but the scale is very large, so a bit of looking should bring you to the correct place. Last week, I offered a lookups to any listers wanting information on their Family Groups from the 1891 Census of certain parishes in Rox. I overlooked the last two parishes on the LDS film I currently have on loan - 787A ECKFORD and 787B EDGERSTON. If anyone would like a lookup in these two parishes, just let me know your details (names, ages, possible birth place). I have the film until Nov. 3. Jim Arnott Canada

Hello, I understand that there is (in Kelso?) a monument to a man named Armstrong who was hung for theft although he only committed crime to help others. Possibly the monument would say something about a 'silk rope'??? I would love to know the story in detail. Thanks, Jacqui --------------------------------------------------------------

Does any reader have a transcription of MI at CARHAM Cemetery? I have recently seen a photo the tombstone of William and Martha Cassie CURRY but unfortunately the words are not clear enough to read. It seems there are also children buried with them and I would dearly love to be able to enter the details in my family records. Bev.
Dear Heather, An English birth certificate will give both the mother's given name and maiden surname, so it sounds as if you may have the wrong entry. Keep in mind though, that the mother could be in a second marriage. Have you tried the 1881 census to see if the baby was born then? I think the census was taken in April. Judy -----Original Message----- From: Heather & Dana Canevaro [mailto:caro@sk.sympatico.ca] Sent: Saturday, 28 October 2000 2:24 AM To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Eng. Cert. Help?? Hello All, I haven't done much research in Eng. and am looking for a bit of help. I have an entry from the St. Cath. index for 1881 from Newcastle/T. I e-mailed the Newcastle Registrars office and gave them the names of the parents I thought might be listed on the cert. They replied that the father matched but the mother didn't. Did these certs. for this time list the mothers maiden name or just her first name and then her married surname? Thanks, Heather Canevaro Canada ______________________________
This morning I found a very useful site on the internet with the IGI Batch numbers for the various regions and parishes in Scotland. There is page on this site that explains how to search the www.familysearch.org using Batch numbers. I believe this method of searching returns the most results if you know where your ancestors were located. I know I have located a few more records that I had been able to locate before. The site is at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/8333/index5.html Good luck, Dee

Looking for John MOFFAT (MOFFITT) (b. before 1780, Norham) who may have married in Norham in c. 1800 Ellen "Nellie" DAVIDSON. The family had at least two children [Agnes (b.1815) and Andrew (1823)] born in Lanton where John and Nellie settled. Eventually, most of the family emigrated to New Brunswick. Would like information re the MOFFAT and DAVIDSON families pre 1815. Were they from Lanton or Norham? Parents? Other children?
Hi Cyril, Most would travel be sea from Berwick-upon-Tweed. Only the rich could afford travel by Stage-Coach, however the 'Berwick Smacks' carried passengers as well as cargo.. The fares around the time you are interested in were one pound ten shillings in a cabin or one pound steerage, children 7 shillings or 14 shillings, depending on age, dogs 5 shillings. This would have been a very uncomfortable and dangerous voyage in the winter. Details above were taken from the book 'Recollections' or 'Incidents culled from the lives of some of our sea-faring men.' Published by Martins of Berwick in 1908. Thanks listers for such terrific information - it seems my ancestor Christy (Christian) Sword b 1807 at Southdean had a son by an Andrew Douglas (not identified) and he was christened John Sword Douglas on 8 March 1834, at Mervinslaw Farm by the minister of the Free Church of Jedburgh. In 1841 aged 5, John lived at Larkhall Farm 1 mile west of Jedburgh with grandmother Betty Sword, a widow, and her son Thomas aged 20 (agricultural labourer, probably at this farm). His mother Christy Sword was a servant to Robert Pringle at Bairnkine Farm about 2 miles to the south of Jedburgh and quite near to Mervinslaw. Christy died at Denholm in 1880 of 'general decay'! Could anyone with census lists say where Christy Sword resided between 1851-1880? (dau John Sword and Elizabeth). What level of education would young John have had in 1840's? He was successful in Australia, leaving 'many farms'! Robyn Melbourne, Aust.
