Just jumpling on the irregular marriages bandwagon. I suspect that Matthew SPENCE and Margaret MOFFAT (both born circa 1824) were married in this way around 1850 or so (1853 at latest). They were from Cornhill & Carham so the Coldstream Bridge might be most likely, but I would look wider than this if I had access to the material. Anyone able to help? Hi Bob, Do these places have a separate record of the marriages that took place there? If one couldn't find a marriage in the OPR, for example. (these would be Border Scots not English) thanks, Peggy
Hi All Can anyone check in the irregular marriages, if JOHN WRIGHT and CHRISTIAN HUNTER were married 1800c . HI JANICE, I have received you ever welcome e-mail dated 10 March 2003, and I thank very much for the information. It looks as if my ancestors managed to impress their activities into the history books. All I now have to do is to find out where Geo Jas GUTHRIE and Charles GUTHRIE fit into the picture. I will e4xpect that they are children of George GUTHRIE, and brothers of David, who married Euphan AIR Once again thank you very much for the information, and please continue with any other information that you come across, it will be very welcome. Best wishes and kind regards Noel GUTHRIE

My brickwall is as follows : I am searching for the marriage of William Johnson and Frances Lough, both of the Spittal/Tweedmouth area, who probably married about 1820-1825. I have not been able to find them in parish records as yet. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Cecil Johnson.
Does anyone have an interest in the Douglas name from the Annan / Cummertrees area ?? Some of my ancestors made it to Bowness-on-Solway, Cumbria and then on to Canada. Brian J. Douglas in B.C., Canada
Hello Wally: There is a Lamberton Toll marriage record that fits your query: 13 April 1845. Lamberton Toll. John Anderson and Isabellea Watson, both Berwick. Witnesses David Grant and John Anderson. In case you're not familiar with these, many Engish couples crossed the Border to be married by a "priest" at a marrying place, such as Lamberton Toll, Mordington Toll, Coldstream Bridge, Gretna Green, etc. These were "irregular" marriages in that they didn't take place in a church, but they were legal in Scotland. For Noel Guthrie and other interested GUTHRIE researchers, (Noel GUTHRIE's ancestor, David GUTHRIE married Euphan AIR at Coldstream) I have just received, from my cousin, keeper of the archives of the AIR family, some certificates, issued to my ancestor, Alexander Cummings AIR, of Coldstream, Berwickshire, which are signed by two GUTHRIEs.... The first is a certificate from the Royal Westminster Opthalmic Hospital, Charing Cross, London - the signatures are G.J. GUTHRIE and Charles GUTHRIE, dated 1841. The second is a certificate of enrollment to the Royal College of Surgeons in London, dated 19 February 1841 - there are ten signatures on this document, being those of the President and Vice Presidents, one of whom is Geo: Jas GUTHRIE - I presume that this is the same G.J. GUTHRIE of the other document. I know that my ancestor also studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, under Robert Knox (the anatomist of 'body snatchers' fame). I am still searching for the marriage of William AIR and Isabella WEATHERHEAD - the family Bible gives the date of their marriage 17 March 1775 but I am unable to discover where this took place. All of their seven children were born in Coldstream. Regards Janice Wood North Yorkshire researching AIR (Coldstream up to 1830s, Edinburgh to 1850s) WEATHERHEAD pre 1775 (possibly Coldstream) FOSTER (Coldstream boot and shoemakers 1770s-1850, then Glasgow)
Does anybody have any information on the above, I have been led to believe it was somewhere in the borders area

I am a descendant of William (B?) Inglis (b. Scotland), through his son James, (b. in the US). I think WIlliam was born in Douglas, Lanark in 1749, but I can't find any confirmation of that. William's wife was, I think, Grace Davis (Davisson or Davidson). I am trying to find records confirming his birth, marriage, emigration to the US, and death. Most important of all, I am trying to trace the line back in time from William. Does anyone have any records of him or his parents? Any records of their forbears? Thanks Sandi in Boise, ID, USA [email protected]
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I'll find the Parish of Heriot Scotland Bob
Jane, Your, "1851 Fogo William WATSON H Mar 38 Ag lab Buncle,Ber Christina WATSON W mAR 42 Buncle,Ber their children and Agnes REA sister-in-law W 28 Visitor Buncle Mary STUART Serv W 18 Farm Servant Lauder" engaged my attention, since I am always interested in Rea / Rae and Stuart / Stewart in the area. Does the "W" indicate widow? Two very young widows in this case. Patricia.
My copy (1974 paperback edition) has a 22 x 15 inch fold out map of the Borders, with a 9 x 7 families map printed on the reverse, both in black and red. Is this what you are looking for? If so, how many dpi do you want, what file format and do you want colour or b & w? Jim Balmer
I found the book at the library, but I think the maps are a disappointment. Only the frontspiece (on the inside of the front cover and the next blank page) and the same in the back are truly maps, with a few illustrations inside. The cover maps have a wide tape across the binding in the center, so that section is missing on both the front and the back covers. What a pity. Clan Map of Medieval Scotland It's small but readable, I suppose. Antique Maps Of Scotland Scottish History and Biography I'm sure there is something out there in cyberspace on the border countries.
