Nicole, having recently indexed the 1841 census for Yarrow, I can tell you that Thomas Waugh was not recorded anywhere in the parish. No Waughs at all. Those at Whitehope had names of Ballantyne, Cowan, Stoddart, Gray, Little and Brunton. Where did the 1851 census give as his parish of birth? I know that here is so much to see & do there, & I intend to make use of every minute. (Special thanks go to Lesley Robertson & to Nancy in Australia.) While searching around the internet for Scottish sites, I discovered a wonderful new site. (New to me anyway.) Here there is much interesting text information along with many fine photos of the Borders area. Here is a good place to learn about Border Rievers, most of it new to me. I have lots to learn. If you have tried to find him on Scotland's People, and he's not turned up, it is possible that he was from one of the other denominations (not Church of Scotland) in which case the registers might be in NAS. You can email them now and ask if them have them. Unless there's a good reason not to, I would head for GROS at New Register House - you can get all all the censuses from 1841 to 1901 there. You can also look for death certs for him and his wife . get her 1855 death cert - 1855 certificates are the most informative of the lot (they got carried away as it was the first year). If nothing else (it shoudl show all his kids), it will show whether she died a wife or a widow. Go and visit the Scottish Genealogy Society up near the Castle in Edinburgh - they have a good collection of books for sale including memorial inscription collections and lots of other info. I don't have their URL here, but you'll find it on GENUKI. Apart from anything else, if your guy left a MI, you'll find it in there, and then you'll know it's worth searching. The Borders FHS is in Galashiels (down the road from Melrose) - they're helpful and have a good range of material. I THINK the Borders archives are still in Selkirk. Do take a bit of time out to see the Border Abbeys, though. My favourite, although it's a bit off the beaten track, is Dryburgh. Queen mary's house in Jedburgh is also worth seeing. Above all, enjoy! That there's no mention of them in the MI list is not a surprise since they also don't show on the lists of members of the parish church. These don't start until 1834, and as they were so careful to get their kids baptised, I would expect them to appear. One source I don't have (haven't found yet) is the registers of the Free Church, but again, these people bap their kids into the Kirk, so I don't think it would be useful anyway. I assume that this is the couple who married on 24 May 1794 in Ecclesmachan, West Lothian? If so, there's another child - James bap 15 Oct 1797 in Bathgate W.Lothian. (She was baptised 27 Mar 1808 at Swinton & Simprin, daughter of William JAFFREY, mill-wright, and Elizabeth LOGAN whose marriage banns were promulgated at both Bunkle & Preston and Swinton & Simpron in August 1801.) I haven't found a record of Alexander and Helen's marriage although there is an entry in the IGI, probably a patron submission, which says abt 1831, Duns. I've only found three children of the union, born between 1832 and 1842 at Duns and Edrom. They were : Elizabeth bap. 30 Jan 1832 Duns; Margaret bap. 27 Feb 1836 Duns; and Alexander born 26 May 1842 Edrom. There are probably more to be found. Grateful for any help or suggestions.
