    3. Hi list members, I admit I have been completely overwhelmed by the response to my requests regarding my Family History. I will list what information I have, especially regarding John Ritchie and Isabella (Carlyle?) which seems to be the back bone of my current investigations. 1851 Census for Middlebie.(Transcription from my English cousin and since confirmed via Dumgal) Kirtlebridge: John Ritchie Head age 23 Farm Servant Born Annan M Isabella Wife 22 Gretna M Walter Son 1 Halfmorton S 1861 Census for Middlebie.(Transcription from cousin) Eaglesfield Sunnybrae: John Ritchie Head age 33 Carter Born Annan M Issabelle Wife 32 Kirkpatrick M Walter Son 12 Halfmorton S William S 10 Kirkpatrick S John S 7 Cumb.UK S James S 5 Middlebie S Thomas S 1 Middlebie S 1871 Census for Caldewgate,Carlisle,UK.(Transcription from cousin) 10 or 17 Peel St. Carlisle: John Ritchie Head age 44 Carter Born Scotland M Issabella Wife 43 " M Walter Son 22 Carter " S William Son 20 Carter " S James Son 14 school " S Thomas Son 11 " " S David Son 7 " Carlisle S Mary Dtr 1 Wens Mill? 1881 Census for Caldewgate,Carlisle,UK.(Family search.org etc.) 9 Byron St. Caldewgate: John Ritchie Head age 52 Labourer Born Scotland Isabella Wife 51 " Thomas Son 20 " " David Son 16 " Carlisle Robert Son 7 Scholar Carlisle Note: Walter (my Gr Grandfather),William & James had obviously moved on. I had not picked up on Jane Ritchie that a couple of people have suggested may belong. Walter had married Ann in 1872 (Carlisle 10b622).I have my grandfather's Marriage cert (1894),which lists Walter as Deceased & Carter by trade. I have a death for a Walter Ritchie (Carlisle 10b317) but the age,26,looks a year out. 1881 Census for Caldewgate. 49 Rigg Street, Caldewgate: Ann Ritchie Head age 28 Heddle knitter Born Carlisle Widow Tamar R Dtr 8 " * John R Son 6 " Elizabeth R Dtr 4 " *John Ritchie is my Grandfather. Notes: Regarding the Mary, listed in the 1871 Census at 1 yr old,I have a death in Dec.1874,at 4 the right age.(Carlisle 10b357) And then there are the elusive twins,Catharine & Isabella,Christened on 7th August,1853 at Carlisle,Christ Church (same church as John,Christened 15 Apr 1855),born to a John & Isabella Ritchie (IGI),after which they apparently vanished. I'd better leave it there or I'll completely squander my welcome. If I have missed any fine details of my info or have not quoted sources I apologise and plead ignorance. Ian Ritchie

    3. Dear List Members, Please bear with me whilst I assimilate all the information sent via the list regarding my forbears. Some of It know whilst other info is very interesting but,at present,my brain is in overload. I've been used to meandering through snippets of info from time to time and suddenly I need three extra gears. My thanks to everyone. Ian Ritchie

    3. Thanks Gwenda, I'm amazed by your rapid response and the depth of your information. I'm certainly living in amateur hour here with what I am managing to drag out of the Internet. My cousin (in uk) did tell me that the John Ritchie who married Isabella had the middle name of 'Lottimer' although I have been unable to locate a 'John' with that middle name. Now I'm wondering whether I'm following the correct John and,for that matter, the correct Isabella (Carlyle). I think you are pushing me back to the drawing board Gwenda. Do you get this information from the net or do you have access to a CD? When I was in Tassie a couple of years ago I spoke to a man who was giving a demo of black smithing in a tourist area near Port Arthur and he was very interested in the Scottish Lowlands from whence his forbears came. He said that his daughter (or grandaughter) was compiling a family history but,at that time,I wasn't interested enough to exchange names. Ian

    3. This is my first contact with a mail list so I'll begin with a simple query. MyGreat Grandfather,Walter Ritchie,is listed in a marriage by FreeBMG but is quite alone on the page. I know his wife is called Ann but is there any way of connecting them or must I send for a marriage certificate and hope she is on there? I feel rather guilty asking for help without offering anything so I'll explain that I am researching the Ritchie family between the Annan area and Carlisle and have, thus far, traced John Ritchie and Isabella (Carlyle?)(married in Half Morton,1849) who had at least 8 children, including Walter listed above. I suspect they were also the parents of twins (Catharine & Isabella),born in 1853 in Carlisle,of whom I can find no further trace. They apparently didn't make it to the next census. John and three brothers were (presumably) the sons of Walter Ritchie and Martha Carruthers who lived at Allalee Farm in early 1800s. Earlier than this a John Ritchie of Battle Hill,Annan had 3 sons and 3 daughters but,to date,I have no proven connection to my tree. I shouldn't be to greedy for information but I'm sure everyone will understand. Ian Ritchie.

    3. Hi Katherine, " Rutherfurds Southern Couties Register and Directory" originally published in 1866, was reprinted in 1990 by the Borders Regional Coucil and the Borders Regional Library. I think it is out of print but it is likely available in many of the libraries. It also might be available second hand at a second hand book site. It is a very useful publication since it contains descriptions of the communities. If you havent used it, another good site is the Statistical Acounts of Scotland that gives a good description of the communities: http://edina.ac.uk/cgi/StatAcc/StatAcc.cgi Cheerio, Jane-Ellen, [email protected] Doubt Family Pages: www.ocis.net/~jedoubt/

    1. Re: [BORDER] Old Learmouth

    3. Hi Mary I wonder if there could be any connexion between our families. My 3xgreat-grandmother was Ann (or Agnes depending which record you read) EASTON born about 1787 at Cornhill (according to Census Returns). She married Charles BLYTH - don't know where or exactly when but they had the following children: James BLYTH born 1811 North Learmouth Eleanor BLYTH born 1814 Paston Jane BLYTH born 1816 Mardon Jessie BLYTH born 1820 Newbiggin, Norham Stephen BLYTH born 1822 Sunnilaws John BLYTH born 1824 Newbiggin, Norham James BLYTH born 1825 Ancroft George BLYTH born 1828 Thornton Isabella BLYTH born 1831 Norham (my 2xgreat-grandmother) As you can see some of the names of Ann's children are similar to your family - James and John - also the Jessie you mentioned you had found. Ann was probably the right age to be a sister to John. I have been unable to find a baptism for Ann - although I do know that her father was named Stephen from baptisms of some of her children at Crookham Presbyterian Church. Also baptised at Crookham during the 1820s were children to a William SMITH and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Stephen EASTON, who I presume was a sister to my Ann. I am presuming Ann and Elizabeth EASTON were presbyterian and that is why I am having difficulty finding baptisms. I did find a couple of burial entries in the Cornhill registers for a Mark (1783) son of Stephen EASTIN, Tilmouth and William (1791) son of Steven EASTEN, Cornhill - which suggests they may have been brothers to my Ann. I would welcome your thoughts on this I have been stuck with this line for a few years now. Did your John have any other children - are any of the names similar to the BLYTH names above? By the way Learmouth (East and West) is just South of Cornhill, I think in Carham Parish and Hagg is a little further South again. 3. I am new to the list. Has there been discussion on any of these surnames: Rutherford; Douglas; Wallace; Johnson? So far these relatives all seem to be from Berwickshire, Scotland. Looking for the marriage of John Rutherford (b 1783?) and Isabella Douglas (came to Canada in about 1837 with 8/9 kids).... where they lived, children Walter Rutherford (son of John above) married Janet Johnson at Cockburnspath Parish in 1841. Were there Wallaces in the borders region? A couple Wallaces married Rutherfords in Canada. I can't find the origin of the Wallaces so thought they might have come from the same regions of Scotland. 3. Forrest, Greetings from London. I'm not sure whether I had the will of Joseph Manning (born Thrapston, Northants, lived most of his life and died in Spalding, Lincs 1773). He was a gardener who left use of his cottage to his housekeeper for life, then to Thomas Bullen of Ringstead, Northants. At Northampton Records Office I looked at Thrapston parish records, but the quality of the film was dismal. I hope soon to see the film held at the Soc. of Genealogists library in London. If anything of interest crops up, I will surely be in touch. It has been a tough week with the bombings in Saudi Arabia and Morocco. One of Ian's cousins lived in one of the compounds in Riyadh that was bombed. He was not injured, although his apartment was only 200 yards from the explosion. Ian flies back to Australia this week to visit his elderly mother and many relatives. His mother and my father were from families of ten, which have multiplied several fold. Time for the BBC Ten O'Clock News (the main bulletin of the day). Good wishes Rosemary --------------------- London, UK [email protected]

So here it is once again http://www.censusfinder.com/england.htm There are by no means entries for every County but there is enough for a good read. (Try the Scrapbook page) There are also other useful links from this site inc. the Leicester Universtity site that has many old trade directories which are searchable and a link to the Domesday Book. However in answer to the lister below I can only assume that the correct URL was not used (make sure you have .com/england.htm) and NOT ancestry.com Hope this clears up any misunderstanding.
