    1. [BORDER] SKELTON family
    2. Harry Gardiner
    3. Hello all: I am new to this list. I'm looking for information on George Skelton, his wife Elizabeth Watson, and their daughter, Matilda Skelton (my gggrandmother). The Skelton family I am pursuing is from Wiberfoss, England. George (my gggranfather) was born about 1800 and Elizabeth (my gggrandmother) about 1810. Matilda was born in August 1832. She married James Francis on July 12, 1851 in Shippen, Tioga County, PA. She later married her sister's widower, Simeon Bacon. George's parents (my ggggrandparents) may have been Richard Skelton, born March 27, 1758, in Brampton, Cumberland, England who married Jane Hetherington on May 30th, 1782. If you have any information on any of these Skeltons or believe you may be related to them, please send me e-mail at the address on this message. Thank you for any help. 1. [BORDER] Irregular marriages and missing records!
    2. Gary Newbery
    3. My gt. gt. grandmother Isabella Smith made an "irregular" marriage to James Watson on the 8.11.1832 and were rebuked before the session at Hutton , had their marriage confirmed and paid a fee/fine of 2s1d. Sadly James was killed in an accident at Huton Miller Bridge in Aug. 1836, and on March 21st 1839 "Widow" Watson married Robert Allan, again irregularly. This time they were rebuked before the session 5 months later on Aug. 25th and fined the enormous sum of 6s2d. Perhaps not surprisingly none of their subsquent children were baptised at Hutton church, although Isabella's previous children had been.Robert died in 1898 and Isabella in 1904 both in Paxton village where they had lived all their lives. I knew there would be no stone but consulted the burial registers at Dunns to find out where they lay, only to find no entries at all for 1898 and no evidence that either had been buried! They aren't at Ladykirk either. So can anyone tell me what exactly an irregular marriage was, and why they bothered when they had to face rebukes and fines. If there would be other records of baptisms in the 1840s and what happened to the bodies? Sloppy book-keeping or what? Hope someone will enlighten me.There is a photo of Isabella taken about 1902 looking very stern, but it's nice to know she was quite a lass and cocked a snook at the establishment! Mary N.

    1. [BORDER] Interests: Goodfellow/Thomson; Meek/Angus; West/Bryce; Smith/Ireland
    2. Marjorie Goodfellow
    3. I would appreciate hearing from people with interests in the following family groups. Robert Goodfellow, born in Roxburghshire about 1796, married Janet Thomson, daughter of John Thomson and Janet Pow of Innerleithen, Peebleshire. The couple was living in Valcartier, Lower Canada, in 1821. I have not found the marriage and would appreciate knowing more about them and their ancesters. The Goodfellow background is particularly puzzling, despite the amount of research that I personally have done in Edinburgh. William Meek, probably the son of William Meek & Janet Weir, born June 19, 1784 in Jinkabout Mills, Bo'Ness Parish, Linlithgowshire, married Margaret Angus, date and place unknown. They emigrated to Quebec about 1820. His brothers, John and Thomas, also came to Quebec initially but later moved on. I would appreciate learning more about them and their ancestors in Scotland. John West, Linlithgow, born about 1782, married Ann Bryce, born about 1789, in Ecclesmachan in February 1808. I am interested in knowing more about them and their ancestors in Scotland. William Smith, born about February 1807 in Bulmer, Yorkshire, was married to Hannah Ireland in Quebec in 1832. She was also born in Yorkshire, the daughter of Francis Ireland and Hannah Hopper, early settlers in Valcarter, near Quebec City. Again, I would appreciate knowing more about their Yorkshire origins. The Smith family is a particular challenge. In all cases, I have information to share about the families in Canada. 3. Hi Judy, I found a similar note on a registration of interest to me. I asked Scotlands Peoples on line help and was told it was a correction of an error or additional information. Most often it is the addition of a cause of death from the coroners report. The date and volume refer to the records correction in the register. As of a few months ago these images were not online and had to be requested in writting to the registrar. Hope that is some help. 3. Listers, Further to my epic sending regarding my tree herewith a few further observations. A couple of people have mentioned a Jane Ritchie which I had missed so I must look for her. Joanne mentioned that Jane's mother is listed as Isobel so I'll see if I can dig that one out. Gwenda doesn't think my Isabella Carlyle fits but I really like the sound of it. I admit that I don't have the definitive connection but I'm trying. Linda,on the other hand, who is researching the Carlyles seems to like it. Incidentally Linda, when I discovered the possible connection to the Carlyle name I admit I bought a biography of Thomas Carlyle (by Julian Symons;Publ.Victor Gollancz Ltd - 1952) only to discover that he and his wife,Jane Baillie Welsh, remained childless. I did uncover the Thomas that you mention and his spouse,Katherine Kirkpatrick, but couldn't connect him to his famous relative.I also purchased a copy from the Old Parochial Register of the extract showing the marriage of John Ritchie & Isabella Carlyle, married July 6th,1849 but, unfortunately, haven't been able to decipher the name of where they were married. That's why they have transcripts of course but I couldn't resist getting a copy of the old document. To Frank - thanks for looking up Martha Carruthers although our Martha was still alive at the 1841 Census. Irene I think I confused you with the jumbled way I presented everything. The Walter who married Martha Carruthers was an older ancestor,my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather if the connection is legitimate. Thanks again everyone. Ian Ritchie
