First, the 61 and 71 are not indexed, second these are common names - without ages or birth parishes, how could people identify them? What you're asking would take a lot of work, especially for a place the size of BoT, as somone would have to go through all the enurmerator's books. May I suggest that you locate your nearest LDS Family History Centre? They have the 19th century census on film, and you can search it yourself there. Apart from anything else, it's fun and you never know what you might learn from looking at the neighbours (I once found the next generation back living next door to the people I was looking for!). Looking for information on a CARMICHAEL family. John CARMICHAEL married Mary St. Clair MacDOUGALL in 1884. John was the son of Robert CARMICHAEL and Helen HENDERSON. John was in the "whisky" business. He, his wife and family were quite well off. John & Mary had three daughters, Ethel 1886, Edith 1886 and Evelyn 1892. They had one son John 1894. Evelyn married Henry Arthur SMITH in 1931. Would love to find their children if they had any. John St. Clair CARMICHAEL enlisted in the Indian Army in 1919. He was with the 1st Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (old 91st Highlanders). The family lived at Bellevue, Coldstream and had a summer home at The Crescent, Spittal, Berwick-on-Tweed. Just wondering if anyone recognizes any of these names. Thank you, Trish LEWIS Nova Scotia Canada

I have the impression that a few people are underestimating the size of Clan Douglas. It's nearly as common a surname as Robertson! Have a look here for background... http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/dtog/douglas2.html Lesley Robertson _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. The short answer is no. The name Douglas was mentioned by another reader in connection to Timpendean estate near Jedburgh. My interest is with residents of the estate after the time of the Douglas family, who apparently sold it in 1843. > Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2003 08:50:09 -0700 > From: "Brian Douglas" <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: <[email protected]> > Subject: [BORDER] Douglas of Timpendean > Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" > > Hello Katherine: > > Are you searching the Douglas surname in the Border area ?? Can you or any other reader tell me a bit more about the DOUGLAS family connected to Timpendean estate? I posed the original request for information because my gr-gr-gr grandfather Francis PATERSON died as a resident of a cottage at Timpendean in 1868. His daughter Margaret was married to William (Will) Scott who farmed there. The son of the aforementioned Francis Paterson, also named Francis (b 1832), went to Edinburgh to work for the railway as a Grease Manufacturer. He married Christina WHITE in 1856, and among their children was a daughter named Maggie Douglas PATERSON, (b 1867 - d 1868). Perhaps there is a link to the DOUGLAS family, though I have not yet found one. Or possibly the name is just a tribute to a past friendship. Would documents regarding the sale of Timpendean estate in 1843 be available for perusal in Edinburgh, or at a more remote location? Thank you for any further information that may result.
