After reading about this site in my local "Fiske Genealogical Foundation Newsletter" ( http://www.fiskelibrary.org ), I wanted to be sure everyone had seen it: http://nls.uk/maps which has been newly updated. There are over 1900 Ordnance Survey plans for 62 of the largest Scottish cities and towns. The plans were drawn up between 1847 and 1895 -- a bit late for my research, alas. Many of the images are at 1:1056 or 5 feet on the map to one mile on the ground, according to the article by Gary A. Zimmerman, contributing editor of the newsletter. In a few cities, the scale is 1:528 (10 foot scale)! These maps are just part of what is available in the map room of the National Library of Scotland. The National Archives of Scotland also has a large holding of maps, which according to the article does not duplicated much of the NLS collection. The NAS website is at http://www.nas.gov.uk/, and is described here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/intro.html Maps are one of my favorite resources, and I hope you find these websites useful in your research. Any help or suggestions?? Survival of records is patchy, but if you mean BMDs, they didn't start anywhere in Scotland until 1855. We mostly rely on church records (baptisms and marriages) before that, but only the records of the Church of Scotland are easily available. Other records MAY be in the National Archives. Hi: Although I have used Rootsweb for several years---answering requests for California data--I have never used it to search for my own needs. So--- perhaps I will be lucky in switching my role. My gg grandfather, William Brown, per 1841/51 (Darnick) Melrose, Rox., census, was born 1797 in Lindean, Selkirk. On 2 Feb 1819, he married Margaret Wayness in Melrose, and James, their youngest, was my great grandfather. In 15 years of searching, Selkirkshire has always seemed in relatively short supply of vital stat records. Any help or suggestions?? Thanks much. William Davidson born 1857, Woodhall , Pencaitland Parish. Illegitimate son of Janet DAVIDSON. By 1861 Janet had married Thomas LIVINGSTON, & William shows 1861 census, age 3 years, noted as " wifes son.". I cannot find William in 1871 census. What happened to him ? Janet died 1865. His birth Regd., does not name a father, however, Janet had had 2 children previously to Peter Montgomery, it is possible that William was a 3rd child of this liason. The Kirk Session records, have A Janet Davidson admonished , she had a child with Robert McIntosh, a Miner, of Cowdenfoot, Dalkeith. Either of these scenarios are possible answers. Has anyone any information about William ? Mary [email protected] New Zealand
