Hi all I recently had the address of an on-line genealogy newsletter sent to me which covered the Borders and had "classified ads" for people tracking family. Naturally,I deleted the address as soon as I got it : o). Does anyone out there have this newsletter? Whilst I'm here I'm researching my ggg grandfather's family----he was ADAM WEATHERHEAD , bc 1812 in Tweedmouth. He married a Jane Sprot also bc1812 in Tweedmouth. I';m trying to find details of Adam's parents (and Jane's family naturally) Many thanks Phil

Chruch records generally 9but not always) contain the names of the bride and groom, and sometimes where they were living (e.g. John Brown of the parish of Whatever, and Jane White of this Parish). Irrgegular marriages are more of a problem - some of the men carrying them out kept registers, others didn't. Some registers have survivied - for example the Scottish Genealogy Society sells copies of a register from Lamberton Toll. Entried show the names of the bride, groom and witness and sometimes where they were from. Irreg marriages could have happened at any of the Border crossings - bridges, tolls, etc, so you'd have to be lucky to find the,. Many tks. to all who answered my query in regards to Coldstream Wedding. Best Regards Rob Douglas.
Greetings ! My brickwall is the marriage of William Johnson & Frances Lough, both born in the Tweedmouth area about 1803-1805. I have Frances Lough's baptism in the Spittal U.P. church in July 1805, but no baptism record for William Johnson, nor their marriage. Their first six children were baptised in Tweedmouth Parish Church, starting in 1825. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Cecil Johnson.

Hi Heather Lough, Such a long time since I contacted Borders, but here I am again. My query: Could you give me a name and address to contact for school records in Swinton and any Hamilton records for the 1870 time period in Swinton ? What about Church records for that time also in Swinton ? Best regards and thank you, Dorothy Rothwell
Please delete me from BORDER-D Digest until further notice. Thank you. [email protected]

Rob Douglas. Certification was only just getting going in 1857, and some people were missed. However, it's also possible that they made a mistake with the date, or the spelling was eccentric, so I would suggest that you head into Scotland's People and have a look for yourself before you give up hope. In your place, I would check +/- a couple of years, and any likely (and less likely) spellings. If the family moved a lot, I would also check the neighbouring parishes. People weren't as obsessed with dates and records in thoses days, and frequently guessed when faced with an official demanding information (look at how ages vary from census to census). You can imagine the conversation "let's see now, our Jimmy is 5, so we must have married in [year], or was it [year]...... Different officials presided at the Irregular marriage ceremonies, and some were more careful than others about keeping records...... If all else fails, ask the Borders FHS. Mine is my father-in-law, a Norwegian by birth, living in Fla. 101. Passed his driver's test at 100, exercises 1 hr. every morning, has a mind like a steel trap. Too bad I don't have his genes.
