    3. Hello everyone, and compliments of the season. I don't want to sound like an old "humbug", but I am a bit discouraged at the lack of response from people who put a query on this list, and then after me going to a bit of bother to find out something, they fail to reply. Just a courtesy email would only take a few minutes. Alas, from now on, I am only going to reply to folks I know, who will at least acknowledge my response. Nicky Young

    3. Carter/coachman - or carrier maybe? They used carts. My 1838 almanac tells me that the Wooler carrier put up at the George Inn in Edinburgh. Since there were arrivals and departures on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, it sounds like there were at least 2 of them. Other listings put the George Inn in Bristo St. which might be a clue because there was a secession church there. Not sure when it was built. Maybe some kirk session records in the National Archives of Scotland. Just a guess tho as secession members wouldnt necessarily use the nearest chapel. 2. Alan & Anne Middlemass
    3. We have a dead end in one of the research lines that has only a reference in the census to a birthplace of Scotland. The name recorded is spelled as PITTILLO and PITTILLA but in IGI appears to be grouped at times with PITLOH The relevant ancestor had the forename Gideon and this appears to be a recurring name around Harbottle in Northumberland and in Presbyterian records. There is a christening that we read today in the Harbottle transcript of a grandchild to a John PITLOH where he is described as a native of Jedburgh. Whether co-incidence or otherwise there is a Gideon in IGI with a Jedburgh christening in 1714 although much too early for the 1808 birth of my Gideon. Our enquiry of the list is whether anyone has come across the forename/surname combination Gideon Pittillo [and variations] or can tell us if there are substantial gaps in baptismal/christening records in IGI or other publications for Jedburgh and that area in south and south west Roxburgh? 1. [BORDER] Re: Annie Tully
    2. Katherine Paterson
    3. Thanks for your interest in the name Annie TULLY. I searched for the marriage of your Robert & Agnes TULLY on the IGI and found it as 5 May 1828 in Edinburgh. I did not find any listing of children born to this couple on IGI, so I cannot make a link with them for my Annie TULLY. It seems unlikely that her parents would have been married in Edinburgh. I have Annie's birthplace as being Sprouston, Roxburgh, about 1834/35. This is info from the 1881 Census at Stitchel, Roxburgh, where she is listed with her husband Francis Paterson, their children, and a person named Betsy TULLY, age 74, identified as a "relative". If we speculate a bit, Betsy could be an aunt or aunt-in-law of Annie's. Annie TULLY and Francis PATERSON were married on 11 Aug 1853 at Nenthorn, Berwick. They had 10 children, the first named Harriet (likely Annie's mother's name if the traditional Scottish naming system was used) who died in infancy, & the name was used again for another daughter. I shall keep your e-mail on file, and if I do find any links, I'll get back to you. James moved to Manchester by 1852 and married Emma SENIOR. They moved to Birmingham where their children Elizabeth Ann 1865, James 1859, Helen 1861 and Isabel 1863 were born. But Francis was born in 1794 as mentioned in my previous message, his wife Helen's birthdate is still unknown, and I don't know if Francis had a sister (or paternal aunt) named Helen. Francis & Helen PATERSON lived near Jedburgh in a cottage at Timpendean Farm, where he was farm steward. Their children - John b. 5 Sep 1823 Roxburgh marr. 3. Hello Ave, Re: the John PATERSON mentioned in your will - I am a descendant of Patersons from the Roxburgh area of Scotland. My oldest known ancestors of direct line are Andrew PATERSON & Margaret SCOTT who married on 6 May 1790 at Oxnam, Roxburgh. Their known children are: John PATERSON b. 27 Apr 1792 Linton, Roxburgh - no other info known Francis PATERSON b. 25 Sep 1794 Linton, Roxburgh, d. 13 Feb 1868 Jedburgh, Roxburgh marr. Helen CLARK 27 May 1821 at Ancrum, Roxburgh (my direct ancestors) James PATERSON b. 24 Aug 1796 Linton, Roxburgh marr. Harriet ANDERSON? Only known child, a son Francis b. abt 1830 marr. Annie TULLY Susan PATERSON b. 9 Nov 1798 Linton, Roxburgh, d. 1 Mar 1873 Ladhope, Roxburgh marr. John BLACK 21 Mar 1824 at Crailing, Roxburgh All males that I have mentioned were farm workers or stewards, so the ironmonger profession of your John Paterson of Peebles doesn't seem to fit into this family's heritage. If you think there may be a link between your John Paterson and the family listed here, I would be happy to exchange information with you. Katherine Vair Paterson [email protected]
