This one is a Welsh one and only gives her husband's name. I have searched through MIs, etc. in the hope that some of her family might show up - as have other distant relatives in Canada for the past 20 years! The only extra piece of information that might be of use is that her husband's brother called one of his daughters Esther Carson Burgess. Why was this? Could the minister have got totally confused (i.e. parents written as Samuel Burgess/Euphemia Colthard rather than James Burgess/Jean Carson), am I missing something? Does anyone know of a manufacturing firm called Carson or Crae/Mcrae near the border? Apart from place and cause of death, the Eng & Wales death certs are really very little help to family historians. Why oh why did most of my Scots ancestors die in Eng & Wales ;-) Judy
Hello, everyone, Apologies if you see this more than once. I am "elnalexjoe" and folk who know me on these lists will know me as Eileen in Hampshire. They will also know that I would not send any request for authentication with any "malice aforethought". I will explain to you what I think has happened. I downloaded a free trial spam blocking programme from the internet but it was too time consuming to set it all up so I decided to delete it completely from my computer. I have just checked again this morning and it is not listed in my programmes so as far as I am concerned it is no longer there. Why all these messages have been sent out to everyone in my address book - I just do not know as I have not activated anything and the programme does not exist on my computer, well, not that I can see. Hopefully, it will not happen again - or perhaps someone very knowledgeable about computers may be able to tell me where this "deleted" programme may perhaps be lurking on my machine. I am sorry that some folk seem to have been upset by this but I did smile as one of the messages to someone in my address book was responded to by a programme which does exactly the same thing! Hopefully, the show is now over, Thanks, Eileen in Hampshire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIGHT BACK AGAINST SPAM! BlankHi Everybody, I have just joined your list. I am hunting for "Kennedys". I am from Hawick, though now live in Oz. So far I have traced the following: My gggrandfather was Alexander Kennedy b1846 in Dumfries, he married Catherine McGoay (McGuie) 11/6/1875, he died 10/5/1899 at 10 Ladylaw Place, Hawick. They had 3 children - Alexander who married my ggrandmother Margaret Cowan Catherine born 5/12/1875 in Hawick don't know who she married, she had left the family home by 1891 Jane born 28/12/1877 in Hawick, she was with brother Alex on 1901 census. Unknown who she married or where she went after this time. If anyone has any of these two women on their tree, I would love to hear from you. My ggggrandfather was James Kennedy (b. 1807-20/1/1871), married Jane Garland (1812-15/11/1892) They both lived in a close off the High Street in Dumfries. Apart from Alexander they also had 4 other children - James b.1839 married Marion Grierson 17/4/1865 Mary b. 1842 married Alexander Riddle (unknown date) William b. 1848 married Agnes Bradley 16/1/1868 Menzies b. 1854 unknown If any of this means anything to anybody, again I would love to hear from you. James Kennedy's parents on his death certificate are Menzies Kennedy and Margaret McBride, I am unable to access a death cert for these two until Scotlandspeople provide new searches, which I am waiting for with baited breath. Just read the book by Vic Tookley on the Yetholm Gypsies, their is reference in it of a Alexander K and his tribe from Lochmaben having a fight with the Taits on a brig in Hawick, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were not connected to these Kennedy's after all McBride is a "tinker name". Again if anyone has any insight please let me know. Hope to hear from anybody soon. Fiona Also researching Cowan Family from Lochmaben
Hello List I wonder if anyone can help me with a bit of a dry stane dyke: My ggg grandmother was a Jane/Jean Carson born circa 1786 - all censuses record her birth as 'Scotland'. She married a James Burgess in 1807 in the parish of Kells (New Galloway, KKB). On the marriage entry it says that she was 'from Kirkmabreck'. The only record that I can find for there is a Jean Culloch Carson b. 1786 to Esther Crae/MCrae and William Carson. None of her many daughters were called either Esther/Hester or Crae. One was called Ann Smith Burgess. In a piece on her descendants, published in a pamphlet in Arran Township, Ont, Canada it states that she 'was from a wealthy manufacturing family living near the border' - which side is not stated. She refused to go to Canada apparently because she wished to stay near them. James and Jean were never wealthy, so I'm not sure what happened. They eventually moved to a farm near Bala,Wales in 1833. She died in 1870. Grateful for any help, ideas, advice. Judy
Hello Everyone Happy New Year to you all. I have updated the above list earlier today, which is an interim measure as I may not have included all updates received since 1 December 03. Can anyone out there help with a look-up of the 1841 Census of Heriot Parish, Midlothian? I am searching for a Walter WHITSON age 50, born Innerleithen Peeblesshire and his wife Jane (NIVEN) aged about 49 and any issue. Walter was working as a shepherd at Blackhope Farm (on the Blackhope Water) in 1824.... it is a long shot but I am hoping that he may still be there (unlikely as shepherds did move around a lot). Circulating this to the BORDERs list as well as there is a Blackhope farm near Kielder Forest on the Scottish side of the border....however, I do not believe that this is where Walter was shepherding in 1824, but I may be wrong! Look forward to your responses. Thank you. Jim Arnott

Hello All, my New Years resolution is to get back into researching my family tree so here goes :- I have recently found information on a new line of Armstrong's and would be interested to see if anyone else has a connection. There seem to be connections to Murray's and Cowans again as there are with my direct line It starts off with George Armstrong born 1803 at Draper Croft, (father Thomas mother Jane Renwick), Near Falstone in Northumberland. George is the younger brother of my Great,g,g,g, Grandfather Francis Armstrong. He farmed at KerseyCleugh very near to Kielder for most of his life but latterly moved to Newcastleton where he died in 1882 and is also buried at Castleton. He married twice firstly to Eleanor Nichol from Ovenshank, Roxburgh, Scotland in 1826, they had four children 1 Elizabeth 1827 2 Thomas 1829 3 Robert 1832 (He moved to Glasgow and became a wine and spirits merchant) 4 Francis 1833 Eleanor died in 1834 George married again sometime in the 1840's to Jane Elliot and they had eight children born between 1845 and 1860 :- 1 Agnes 1845 2 Jane 1846 3 Gideon 1847 4 Mary 1849 5 George 1851 6 William Murray 1853 7 Margaret 1858 8 Helen (born 1860 died 1848 Bellingham, Northumberland) I have quite a few details on some of the children, too much to list here, but there are some of the farms that the children were involved with, they may trigger someone's memory. Kersey Cleugh, Northumberland High Green, Northumberland Deadwater, Northumberland Ovenshank, Roxburgh Pleaknowe, Hobkirk, Roxburgh Langsidebrae, Cavers, Roxburgh Hallrule Cottages, Hobkirk, Roxburgh Tythehouse, Hobkirk Langburnshiels, Hobkirk Lustruther, Southdean, Roxburgh All the best for the New Year to all on the list Regards Michael Armstrong (Northumberland)

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me how long it should take for a request to the Berwick-Upon-Tweed Record Office to be dealt with. I sent a letter and cheque from Australia in mid-June asking for a search to be done of Irregular Marriage records and so far have had no reply. I assume I would still get an answer if the search proved negative. Thanks, Sue Researching : HENRY (Roxburgh), THORBURN (Selkirk), ELLIOTT
I just want to thank everyone for their emails supporting me in what I said about some fellow researcher that ask, get, but do not know how to thank. You have all restored my faith. Have a great time over the holidays Regards Nicky Young
