    3. Kerry If you wouldn't mind, I would very much appreciate your help in finding a birth/baptism record for my gt gt grandfather Matthew SPENCE, apparently born in Cornhill in 1823/4. Father's name Robert SPENCE, mother Jane. It would also be interesting to hear of other SPENCEs you might come across while you're looking. The mother Jane was from Scotland, but I don't know any more about the origins of Robert SPENCE who was already dead when I first find Matthew, his wife Margaret (MOFFATT) and his mother Jane in Carham in the 1851 census. Many thanks - good hunting! 3. Kerry, in your trawl thro' the parish records, if you come across any TEMPLE's, I'd be obliged for the information. My "brickwall" is trying to trace the birthplace, parents and siblings of my G.G.Grandfater, George TEMPLE, born c.1775/6. His wedding entry at St. Cuthberts, Elsdon, Northumberland said he was a Husbandman of Camphouse, Jedburgh parish. Also a John TEMPLE (possibly George's brother), a farmer of Camphouse, Jedburgh parish, born c.1764/5, who married a Mary ------ of Camptown, Jedburgh parish about 1795. Regards, Mike Temple, Spain. ----- Original Message ----- From: "kerry" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2004 1:16 AM Subject: [BORDER] Cornhill parish records > I ordered the parish records for Cornhill via my local LDS Family > History Centre. 3. Hi Jim, I've looked at the Foulden parish register a few times on microfilm by ordering it in at my local LDS library. $AUS6 for four weeks and you can look at it any time that the library is open. I'm curious about the names you are researching there, as they are like old friends to me. I have some printouts from the very early years of the register as members of my family were there in 1682 when the register began, and were there up to the late 1800's. Try this page of the LDS website to see what church records they have filmed for Foulden. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp ?display=localitydetails&subject=3056&subject_disp=Scotland%2C+Berwick%2 C+Foulden&columns=*,0,0 Regards, Judy -----Original Message----- From: Jim Smith [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, 27 January 2004 8:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [BORDER] Foulden Parish register Morning Listers I wonder if anyone could advise me how I might check an entry in the Foulden Berwickshire parish register as I've never as yet needed to access any Scottish records! The index is already there, so you can check if the entry is there. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ The IGI (extracted records) is based on the OPR so it might be worth having a look there first http://www.familysearch.org/ BUT make sure that you check that the data you find is extracted from the records and not patron-submitted. Also, I've found entries in SP that aren't in the IGI. Even if you don't use the SP database, have a look at their web site - bottom right of the front screen is a very good "getting started" section which will tell you what's available. 3. Hi all It has been some time since I sent out a query for information on my ancestors. My gggrandfather was John Cleghorn b. 1769 in Roxburghshire. His wife was Isabel Oliver b. abt. 1777 in Hawick Parish the daughter of John Oliver and Agnes Ekron. They were married by a Mr. Paton in Ettrick, Selkirk, Scotland on June 14, 1799. They lived for many years on Falnash farm in the upper part of Hawick Parish where we believe John was a shepherd. They emigrated to Guelph, Ontario, Canada in 1831 with 7 of their 11 children. The 4 girls who stayed in Scotland were: Janet b. 1800 (infant death); Helen b. 1804 m. to Walter Laidlaw; Elizabeth b. 1806 m. ?; Eliza b. 1810 m. ? John and Isabel carried a letter of introduction with them to Canada from their preacher Gavin Turnbull of Carlenrigg Chapel, Hawick dated May 17, 1831. We don't know what port they left from in Scotland or came to in Canada and haven't been able to find any ships lists showing their names. If anyone has any ideas on where we could find this information it would be greatly appreciated. We are especially looking for siblings and/or parents of John. If anyone thinks John or Isabel (or any of the girls who stayed in Scotland) may be a part of their family tree I would love to hear from you. Thanks Mary Ellen (Cleghorn) Pilmer

    3. yes, I think the best strategy is to get hold of the films for Jedburgh, including the non church of Scotland records. I notice on the IGI there are a couple of TEMPLEs of an age to be siblings to your George, at Southdean. It would be worth getting the Southdean film too I think. (As an alternative, you could spend a bit of time & cash on Scotland's people, assembling local TEMPLEs into family groups) The advantage of looking at the films is all the extra stuff you get along the way. You get a feel for what is going on in the parish, and if you are very lucky, some extra note or scribble from the minister referring to your family. Still cant work out what that church or chapel is doing on the map before the Church of Scotland one was built. Is it something to do with the Edgerston estate I wonder? Feu comes from feudal, and is the folding of land under a feudal "supervisor" - the payment might have been quite small but was usually made to someone whose family had been the local landowner at some period in the past. Ownership of the land, and of the feu, were not the same thing. It had nothing to do with wartime, but was, as you say, a form of land rent. The feuar was the person who had the land and had to do the paying. Under its index heading "research tools" Scottish Documents http://www.scottishdocuments.com has a collection of old scots words and a list of old occupations with definintions which you might find useful. 2. Mike Simpson
    3. Hi Wilf, A search on google for Feuar gives the following:- The scheme of land tenure in Scotland by which an area of land or feu is held by a feuar (sometimes known as a vassal) from a superior for a fixed annual payment of a sum of money (known as feuduty) following an initial payment. In strict feudal theory, the Sovereign is the universal landowner. All other landowners hold their feus from the Sovereign. In Scotland sub in feudation is possible (it has been unlawful in England since the 13th century). Accordingly it is possible for a vassal who actually lives on the feu to hold of a superior which superior is in fact another person's vassal. The feudal system creates a chain or pyramid with the Sovereign as ultimate owner at the top and the intermediate positions being taken by the Sovereign's vassals who are ipso facto superior to those further down the chain, or at the base of the pyramid. The feuar has all the rights of an owner subject however to the burdens or conditions imposed by the superior. Originally the burdens might require the vassal to perform personal services, such as military service or other forms of feudal duty, or to provide food or other necessities to the superior. Most services have been converted to a payment of feuduty, although some important services are still performed as originally intended. "Feuar": someone who rents ground by payment of an annual fee - the feu. Best regards - Mike Simpson, Penrith, NSW, Australia http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~agene
