Hello Valerie, Thank you for extending your offer of look-ups for migrating Presbyterians! If there are any entries for the surnames VAIR or PATERSON, I would be pleased to see them. Katherine
Hi Jim, In your 11th Feb mail you say "...ANY note of Balmers would be enormously welcome" . I have an Elizabeth (Betty) BALMER marrying a James TURNBULL on 19th June 1803 at St Boswells. She was born abt 1785. No other details about her, I'm afraid, and she's the only BALMER in my tree so far. Regards, Ian Small
While doing look-ups for Presbyterians from the Scottish border counties in Northumberland I noticed the following : At Harbottle Presbyterian Church 1737-1754 : MIDDLEMIST, John; Selkirk 1742 If there is anyone on the BEW or BORDER lists who is unaware of the look-ups I have been doing on the ROX list, I am happy to extend the offer. For your information, there is a list of "Presbyterian Migration into Northumberland" in the Borders Family History Society Magazine No. 19 of June 1992. The introduction says "Printed on the following pages is part of a list of names extracted from the Communion Rolls of some Presbyterian churches in Northumberland. They contain the names of people who had moved from the Scottish Borders into the areas of the churches shown. Under the heading of each church or chapel, the names are followed by place of residence and occupation (where known), the place from which the person came, and the year. Our thanks are extended to the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society for their kind permission to reprint the list and also to Don Mason who researched the article for their Journal." Churches/chapels listed are : Lowick Presbyterian Church 1848-1860 Chattan Presbyterian Church 1850-1860 Harbottle Presbyterian Church 1737-1754 The article continues in the Borders Family History Society Magazine No. 20 of October 1992 which lists : Tower Hill Chapel, Wooler, 1843-1860 Clavering Place, Newcastle 1804-1855 and Westmoreland Road, Newcastle 1855-1860 Seaton Delaval Presbyterian Church 1850-1860 Falstone Presbyterian Church 1795-1860 Etal Presbyterian Church 1777-1783 The lists for each church/chapel range from about 3 (Seaton Delaval) to 90 (Harbottle) names. I am willing to do look-ups if you are willing to be patient. Valerie Henshaw Melbourne, Australia

<Very interesting! I am on a similar quest for the origins of Sir Robert de Hemmer [c 1257] who appears in the Bassenthwaite district of Cumbria> Thanks for your reply. Is a Cross Fleuri the same as a Fleur de Lis? My associating the family with the Knights Templar is purely historical as it was in the 12/1300's that they came to the Borders. All the records I have say the Graydons and their various spellings originated in Berwickshire, other that the de Graydene's who are said to have come from France. I quote 'Robert Graidene (lived Berwickshire c1530) descends from Walter de Graidene in the town & township of Graden 1288' Elizabeth Graydon NZ

His gravestone has a cross fleuri carved on it, which I take to be significant. Were your ancestors from that region? Any particular reason why you associate them with the Knights Templar? Hello list members For many years myself and others have been trying to trace the origin of Graydon/Graden/Gradon. Did they come from France with the Knights Templar? We have Peter, Thomas, Wallter & Hertbert De Gradane circa 1250-1320 descending 7 generations to William Graden c 1465 to Jasper Graden in Lanrig d 1573 and Edmund Graden in Grastanrig prior 1555, Eccles, Berwickshire. One who may have more records in Ninian Gradane in Grastanrig. Sheriff of Berwick d c 1605. Any leads welcomed Elizabeth Graydon New Zealand

Most unlikely that they married in a Church. I have had difficulty finding Gypsies marriages, maybe there weren't any at that time, or they had there own cermonies. Hello to everyone from cold Michigan! I'm attempting to solve an ancestral mystery..... Down through EVERY line of our ELLIOT family in Quebec, Canada and Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, USA - we have all been told that our immigrant Scottish ancestor Robert Elliot (b.? 1760? m. 1788 in Sorel, Quebec, Canada to Louise Josephte Savoie) came from "brete de coq" or "tete de coq" in Scotland. I was told, during a Clan Elliot International reunion that there is a Coq Island, and Coq River .... in Northhampton. But, unable to find a Robert Elliot there, I'm wondering if there isn't some landmark, landscape feature that might explain the "brete" or "tete" - in French, tete is "head" and I don't know what "brete" is.... Anyone have any ideas? Help? Thank you for any information you might give, Sincerely, Judy Muhn
