    3. Dear Kathy, Yes that is the original couple but it is the possible second marriage I'm interested in and can't find on the igi. I think though that there may be details at Selkirk. Thanks for responding though. mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Nemaric" <knemaric1@cfl.rr.com> To: <border@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 06, 2006 1:00 PM Subject: Re: [BORDER] William Allan and Elizabeth Fairington, Paxton > Mary, > > The IGI on www.familysearch.org lists the marriage of a William ALLAN and > a > Mary PAXTON in Chirnside, Berwick - 04 December 1798. 3. Thanks, Arthur, for your enquiry. Howver if it is Norham you think she came from, that is on the English side of the Border and I only have access to Scottish records at Scottish Borders Archive & Local History Centre at Selkirk. I looked up the Index to the pre-1855 Old Parish Records for Berwickshire, but Douglas is a popular name round here and I could find no entries for a Margaret and Isabella Douglas, with the same parents. living near the actual border. Berwick upon Tweed Record office should be able to help with Norham records. Hope you manage to find out. Susan. -----Original Message----- From: border-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:border-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of S&A Sent: 05 September 2006 04:37 To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BORDER] Margaret Douglas G'Day all. 3. Dear listers, I wonder if anyone could help me find a marriage for this couple about 1832/3 or earlier? I am descended from a William Allan and Mary Paxton. Mary died in the early 1830s and on the 1841 census for Paxton there is a William Allan, shoemaker, aged 63 and an Elizabeth 44 with children Adam 8 and Agnes 6 who were the children of William Allan and Elizabeth Fairington. At the moment it is supposition but it is certainly possible that this William was previously Mary Paxton's husband. I had not put 2x2 together when I was at the record office in Selkirk, and am now kicking myself. If anyone can clarify or disprove my theory I'd be grateful. Best wishes, Mary

If you go to Scotlands People, you will be able to search for his birth certificate or look for the family in the census http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ . However, be warned - these are not rare names. If the only identifying feature you have is that he was a twin, you're going to have to check a lot of people. Lesley Robertson

    3. Hi Gail I have the notes somewhere. From memory these was the Misses HOLLAND who are probably the same as the ones who previously had the shop on the other side of the Market Place at the top of the Canongate. But the I S HOLLAND obviously matches up with the forenames of your relative. I think the shop/s dealt in fancy goods and haberdashery, that kind of thing. I traced quite a lot of the local businesses using advertisements and retiral notices from the local paper. I will see what I can dig out. There was an exhibition on local shops at the Jedburgh Castle Jail not so long ago, but I don't know how detailed it was. By the way, was it you who asked if there was a connection with the ROBERTSONS? I am pretty sure there was a HOLLAND-ROBERTSON marriage, again I would have to have a dig in the files. 3. Hi Judy! Thank you so much for your response to my question. Yes, it was me asking about the Hollands - Robertson connection and it was a result of your reply to my question about Christina Hollands and William Beaufort Robertson that led me to your really neat book. I was just sitting looking at the cover after I had gone through the whole thing that I noticed the Hollands name on the cover. If it is not too much trouble I would love to be able to get my hands on whatever information is available. Even if you would be able to advise me how to track it down myself. Thank you again. One of the shops, the fifth from the right, says I. S. Hollands. I believe that would be Isabella Stevenson (Stoddart) Hollands who was married to George Hollands. It was raining somewhere in Scotland every day. But for us, we saw the sun every day and was pleasantly warm. I am warm blooded so all I needed was shorts, a sleveless shirt, and a brollie (unbrella). My wife, bless her heart needed a down vest, rain coat AND an umbrella. ALWAYS carry an umbrella with you every day. You can go through three seasons in one day depending upon where you are. Have a wonderful trip. You'll be getting a preview of what heavon looks like!
