    3. Hi Lesley I too have roots in Hutton and I am trying to connect my indirect line now. I have a Jane Porter born 8 Dec 1821 - father David Porter and mother Elizabeth Cairns. All of their 10 children were born in Hutton. I only know what happened to 6 of them. Do you think she may be your Jane? Regards Heather from Australia

    3. Lesley, the Temple name caught my eye, so I checked the Ancestry B.M.D./ GRO records that are on line, and there was only one Jane Temple married in England & Wales in 1845, and that was in Driffield (were ever that is ?) in the December quarter of 1845. Are you sure about the marriage date ? Mike Temple, Spain. 3. Dear Lesley, I will look this up next week when I am at Scottish Borders Archives. The information could be on the Old Parish Records, but it wa not compulsory in Scotland to register BMD until 1855, and researchers often find they come to the proverbial brick wall at this point, if nothing can be found. The records are those of the Chruch of Scotland - not other denominations. Hope to respond with some positive info. Susan, Hawick, Scottish Borders. -----Original Message----- From: border-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:border-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Lesley & Terry Ruppel Sent: 15 September 2006 13:26 To: border@rootsweb.com Subject: [BORDER] Temple Hutton Berwick Hi Listers, I noticed someone looking up information about people in Hutton Berwick. 3. Dear Susan, Thank you for looking. I suspect a second marriage so may have to look through collections sometime. The other William was son of the first William and Mary. Seems maybe both died. Did you have a note of who Adam was living with? Best wishes and many thanks for your trouble, Mary PS I think all the other Allans are mine as long as they were shoemakers! Susan Donaldson <susanpdonaldson@btinternet.com> wrote: Hi, Mary, I have looked up info. for you on the Index to pre-1855 Old Parish Records for Berwickshire and also the Census Returns for Hutton but found the results a bit confusing: * I found the William Allan & Mary Paxton marriage in 1798 at Chirnside and also the following children born to them: Moses christened 26 Nov. 1803 at Hutton Mary christened 17 May 1814 at Hutton * I could not find a record of the marriage of William Allan and Elizabeth Fairington. I found no reference to Paxton at all, though Paxton is in Hutton parish. The family were at Paddy Mill Cottage, Hutton in 1841. * I found the christening entries for their children: Adam - 17 May 1833 Agnes - 27 June 1835 If the tradtional Scottish naming pattern is followed then the eldest son would be named after the paternal grandfather and eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother, but I could find no entry for a birth/christening for William & Elizabeth, born c.1778 and c.1797, according to the 1841 census entry. * I looked up the 1851 census for Hutton but there were no entries for William & Elizabeth aged 73 and 54 However I did find their two children: Adam was a pauper, Ag. Lab aged 17 a lodger in Hutton village Agnes was a servant, aged 15 at the Union Bridge Toll, Hutton with the family of the tollkeeper * It started getting confusing because there was another William & Elizabeth Allan. He was also a shoemaker in Hutton, but born Chirnside and his wife was an Elizabeth Patterson. They had 7 children in the 1851 census including a Moses, who I traced in the OPR index. There were only three Moses Allan's in the whole of Berwickshire listed, so somehow I feel there must be a connection when your William Allan also had a Moses with Mary Paxton. Your "Moses" was not in Hutton in 1851. There were plenty of Allans, shoemakers of Hutton in the census. If you want any printouts from the above recrods, do let me know and I will send my address. The centre charges 40p per printout + postage - large A4 envelope. Hope this helps, even if it falls short of what you really wanted. I enjoyed looking it up. Howver if it is Norham you think she came from, that is on the English side of the Border and I only have access to Scottish records at Scottish Borders Archive & Local History Centre at Selkirk. I looked up the Index to the pre-1855 Old Parish Records for Berwickshire, but Douglas is a popular name round here and I could find no entries for a Margaret and Isabella Douglas, with the same parents. living near the actual border. Berwick upon Tweed Record office should be able to help with Norham records. Hope you manage to find out. I have been looking for a birth of Margaret Douglas 1820/1824 for years now, It appears from her daughters birth certificate she may have been born at Stobbs Cross Shorewood, yet the census suggests, her place of birth, may have been Norham. as was her husbands Thomas Ingles. the only other information is in her irregular marriage, a witness being Isabella, I suspect this to be her sister. I would be very grateful for any help clear this branch up! 3. Dear Susan, That would be great. I didn't see them in 1851 unfortunately as that would have given me William's birthplace too. Eliz and children must still be around somewhere. I'll be away next week but should be picking up emails whilst away. Thanks for your help. Hope they show up. I am descended from a William Allan and Mary Paxton. Mary died in the early 1830s and on the 1841 census for Paxton there is a William Allan, shoemaker, aged 63 and an Elizabeth 44 with children Adam 8 and Agnes 6 who were the children of William Allan and Elizabeth Fairington. At the moment it is supposition but it is certainly possible that this William was previously Mary Paxton's husband. I had not put 2x2 together when I was at the record office in Selkirk, and am now kicking myself. If anyone can clarify or disprove my theory I'd be grateful.
