REMINDER: This Rootsweb mailing list will become unavailable after Monday, March 2. I have set up our new list at groups.io. Thanks to so many of you have already subscribed and even participated. I have sent invitations to join to all the members of this Rootsweb group. If you don't see one, check your spam filter, or go to https://groups.io/g/BORDER to subscribe. You may also subscribe by sending an e-mail to BORDER+subscribe@groups.io Michael Thompson, list owner
If you have not yet subscribed to the replacement list at Groups.io, please do so at your earliest convenience. After 2 March 2020, Rootsweb will no longer accept messages to this list. Archives will still be available, but who knows for how long. If you have information in some of those messages that is important to your family history research, it would be a good idea to retrieve that data and store it somewhere. For information or to subscribe to the new list, go to https://groups.io/g/BORDER/ The notice that listowners got about Rootsweb ending the list suggested an Ancestry discussion group as an alternative. There wasn't one for Border discussions, so I requested that one be created. Ancestry rejected my request, claiming that Border discussions was too narrow of a topic. They suggest the general Scotland group at https://www.ancestry.com/boards/localities.britisles.scotland.general/mb.ashx Stop by and check it out if you're interested.

The archives will remain, and we can even point people to the new groups. However, your idea of each of us downloading our own posts is excellent! Thank you, Valorie
Since Rootsweb is going away, I have set up a replacement at Groups.io. This service gets good reviews and should be an excellent vehicle for sharing our family history adventures. I have sent invitations to join to all the members of this Rootsweb group. If you don't see one, check your spam filter, or go to https://groups.io/g/BORDER to subscribe. You may also subscribe by sending an e-mail to BORDER+subscribe@groups.io I am trying to bring over our content from Rootsweb, but they seem to be having technical difficulties with the archives, so I can't promise anything. Might be a good idea for each member to download any messages you have received containing information useful to you. As always, any advice, suggestions, or additional information appreciated. Hello folks, I'm not the listowner here, but I am a long-time subscriber and own the East-Marches, SCT-Middle-Marches, West-Marches and SCT-Selkirkshire lists. All going away as of 2 March 2020. Hi folks, there was a recent exchange about a possible common Border ancestor here on the list. Please, if you are mentioning a specific person, provide at least a few details such as birth & death years and location -- preferably simply put and in the subject line of the email. In addition, if it is about a DNA match, mention where you saw the match, such as FamilyTreeDNA (and if Y-DNA, Mt-DNA, or atDNA), Ancestry, 23&Me, MyHeritage, LivingDNA -- or Gedmatch. If Gedmatch, mention your kit number, perhaps in your signature. Also mention if you are part of a FTdna group such as the Scottish Y-DNA Project where you found the match. Other such groups of interest are Cowan (my father's surname, which was in the Borders for some centuries), the Scottish mtDNA Project and Border Reivers. There may be others; feel free to inform others on the list about them. You can also link to the person's record on FamilySearch which is free for all to access. For instance, this is my immigrant Walter Cowan 1778 – 1878 born in Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland died in Galt (now part of Cambridge}, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L5YV-FCM Valorie Zimmerman Gedmatch M186808

Did you ever get an answer on this Armstrong.question? I have been researching Tbomas Armstrong today because a DNA hit.of mine had Thomas in their tree.. I finally found the record of his marriage.in Falstone. My 3x grandfather James Armstrong was born at Wolfelee and his birth registered at Chester's in Southdean Abbotrule. 1829 to John and Helen Armstrong. I am working through my matches tree to determine.if.she and I have Thomas as the common ancestor.or an Elliot. I will be getting my brother to do.a y DNA test.
