I am researching the BORDEN BOWNE connection thanks Audrey Bowne seattle gregbowne@earthlink.net
Christopher Borden born abt 1760 TN was in Green Co. TN prior to 1800 with these other BORDENS: John, Adam, Augustine, George. Then around 1800 and just after they were in Knox Co. Ky. Christopher was married to Sarah.........? They joined the Barbourville Baptist Chruch in Knox Co. Ky. They migrated to Lawrence Co. AL early 1800's and Christopher must have died after 1840 as he is not seen after that. I have names, births, etc of children of Christopher and Sarah. Their dau. Melinda b abt 1801 TN is my ancestor. She married William JEFFREYS. Other children married into these families: Aldridge, Pate, Blankenship, Flannigan, Skidmore. What is his relationship to the other Bordens in Knox Co. Ky and Greene Co. TN with him????? Who are siblings and parents of Christopher???? If anyone has any answers to these 2 questions, please e-mail me. I would really appreciate it. Margie.

I'm sure Phyllis has our best interests at heart, but please know that this "warning" is a hoax, and do not forward it to anyone else. I have attached some information below. Leslie archive of legends & netlore Bill 602P - U.S. Postal Tax on Email Originally posted: 05/22/99 Here's an item straight out of the hoax recycling bin. A "new" email forward claims that the U.S. Postal Service wants to levy a 5-cent federal surcharge on every email delivered within the United States. Far from being new, however, this message has been zipping from modem to modem since May 1999. A <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/blemtax.htm">virtually identical message</A> circulating one month earlier claimed that exactly the same thing was happening in Canada. False, in both cases (see <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/#comments">comments</A> below). Comments: Compare the above to the <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/blemtax.htm">Canadian version</A> of April 1999. It's essentially the same message. Some copycat prankster merely localized the original for U.S. consumption by replacing Canadian references with United States equivalents. No points for cleverness or originality there. Here's an excerpt from the U.S. Postal Service's <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.usps.gov/news/email.htm">published response</A>: > A completely false rumor concerning the U.S. Postal Service is being > circulated over the Internet via e-mail. The e-mail message claims that a > "Congressman Schnell" has introduced "Bill 602P" to allow the federal > government to impose a 5-cent surcharge on each e-mail message delivered > over the Internet. The money would be collected by Internet Service > Providers and then turned over to the Postal Service. No such proposed > legislation exists. In fact, no "Congressman Schnell" exists. > > <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.usps.gov/news/email.htm">'Email rumor completely untrue'</A> The Washingtonian: > <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.washingtonian.com/about/emailhoax.html">'Email hoax'</A> CNET News.com: > <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.news.com:80/News/Item/0%2C4%2C37852%2C00.html%3Fowv">'Email hoax clutters lawmakers' inboxes'</A> Roy Betts, manager of media relations for the Postal Service, put it more bluntly in person: "It's obviously a hoax." Er... evidently not so obviously to those who keep forwarding the rumor to everyone they know. Those tempted to believe this nonsense should visit the Library of Congress Website and <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://thomas.loc.gov/home/c106query.html">search House bills</A> for "Bill 602P" (hint: that's not even how House bills are numbered). Or examine the <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://clerkweb.house.gov/106/mbrcmtee/members/mbrsalph/oalmfram.htm">List of Representatives</A> for a "Congressman Tony Schnell." You won't find them, because they don't exist. Moreover, more than one bonafide member of Congress has issued a <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.house.gov/holden/is%2Dusps.htm">statement</A> decrying the "Internet tax" as a hoax. The Washingtonian, accused in the email of publishing an editorial in support of the tax proposal, has also issued a <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.washingtonian.com/about/emailhoax.html">disavowal</A>. Rumors of rate hikes or surcharges for Internet access, no matter how preposterous, never fail to generate hysteria among rank and file users. Witness the furor over the similar <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.urbanlegends.com/classic/modem%5Ftax.html">modem tax</A> legend of a decade ago, or the more recent <A HREF="http://www.urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/weekly/aa012099.htm">per-minute access charge</A> rumors that have swamped the FCC's offices with protests in recent years. Updates: Protests Result in Congressional Action - Ironically, the U.S. House of Representatives, reacting to calls, letters and emails protesting the nonexistent "Bill 602P" over the past year, passed a real bill in May 2000 prohibiting such a tax from ever being enacted. Even though I might in all likelihood do a much better job of posting my results tomorrow, I'll do so tonight, aware that you're highly interested. While scribbling on my notepad, I was approached by a gentleman whom I presume was the Church caretaker. "Jim" was watering the foliage adjacent to tombstones. As I've said before and cannot repeat enough, this cemetery is so well maintained that you'd think the decedents passed away recently! Of course, some of the stones are illegible, the inscriptions having been obliterated by weathering over time. Nonetheless, the vast majority are in excellent condition. I was told that there is a huge project underway at Christ Church, to map the cemetery and to identify the occupants of each grave. Apparently, longstanding records can fail to represent names in accordance with actual interment sites. Nonetheless, what follows is a listing of surnames on tombstones I copied today, Oct. 7, 2000 from the headstones of graves in cemetery of The Old Christ Church, Shrewsbury, NJ. I have taken the liberty of posting in addition the most prominent, salient inscriptions of some graves I selected, simply because of the personal impressions they left with me. Anne Hunt HALL, b. CA 1820 married Benjamin Wiley PEARCE. Benjamin earned a law degree from what is now the University of Alabama and served as Lieutenant Governor and Acting Governor of Louisiana during the latter stages of the Civil War after retiring from the service with a medical discharge. They had one son that I know of, William Joseph "Buck" PEARCE born Dec 12, 1847 in Ouachita County, Arkansas, then to Bienville Parish, Louisiana, and finally to Shelby County, Texas. Anne Hunt HALL is supposed to have "descended from a prominent Alabama family whose English ancestry is traced back prior to Columbus' discovery of American through the BOLLING and BORDEN family lines". I am descended from the BORDEN family on my Father's side but just found this connection on my Mother's side. If anyone out there recognized Anne Hunt HALL I would love to correspond with them. Hi! Just to let you know I am going back to BellSouth as I had too many problems with freewwweb.com. I couldn't get through to anyone in WV and when I finally did reach Wade's brother this afternoon, I discovered his brother-in-law had had an operation on his shoulder. We are hoping to leave May 3l or June 1 to head to VA, WV, and Anderson, In to Camp Meeting which begins June 16. At the moment we have our granddaughter, Jennifer from Arizona and her best girlfriend visiting so we have been trying to entertain them. At the same time I am trying to keep down stomach pains which I think are coming from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. At least the Doctors have ruled out Cancer and Krohn's Disease. This one is certainly bad enough as for pain and inconvenience. If you get this message, let me know. PHYLLIS
My name is Jason Phelps. My Borden line is on my Maternal side. Eli Borden(1825-1907) married Martha J(1829-1908 had son Dave M. Borden(1845-1898) married Jennie Stewart(1863-1913) had son Walter Eli Borden(1879-1951) married Nettie Estelle Stem(1883-1963) I don't have any places except they are in the USA and eventually came to Texas. I need any information that you have on this family.
Using www.findagrave.com and a national cemeteries listing at www.cwc.lsu.edu/cwc/projects/dbases I was fortunate to document the burial sites of two 9th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment BORDENs who were my g-g-grandfather's brothers: NATHANIEL BORDEN (1837 TN-8 January 1864), who left Rhoda Moren, a widow was with Company D, 9th KY Infantry; died during siege of Chattanooga of chronic diarrhea. Nathaniel Borden is listed among those buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery, 12 Bailey Avenue, Chattanooga, TN, section D grave #12536. JOHN Y. BORDEN (1844 TN-2 JANUARY 1862), buried at Mill Springs National Cemetery, Nancy, Pulaski County, KY. The date of death listed is 1 January 1862 vice 2 Janauary 1862. ( www.findagrave.com) See also www.cwc.lsu.edu/cwc/projects/dbases/ncmillsp.htm which lists "BURDEN, JOHN Y. 1 JAN 1862 PVT 9 KY INF Listed as 'Among the Unknown'". Their brother, CLAIBORN BORDEN (1833 TN-2 January 1863), was shot at Stones River and is unlisted and presumably buried in an unmarked grave. Anyone working on this branch of the Bordens is welcome to e-mail me (off-list) to exchange information. I keep wondering if no one knows there were some German Borden's that came to the Shenandoah Valley - our ancester, the first we know about arrived at Port Philadelphia on October 27, 1738. His name was Reinhard Heinrich Borden (I met a man in the Congressional Library in Washington, DC who tried to tell me all the Borden's are English.) With a name like that, I hardly believe he is English but may have had some English ancestors who moved to Germany at some earlier date and stayed there long enough to change the spelling to the German spelling. I think the name may have been "Burden" and was changed when he arrived in America. If someone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it. I got some of my information from Mr. Duane Borden in Denver, Colorado who was working on all of the Borden's in the United States but mostly stuck with the German relatives. I had gotten back to my great, great grandfather who moved from Woodstock, VA where Reinhard Heinrich Borden settled, to Rockbridge County, VA and I have a lot of information from there forward and Mr. Borden in Denver was kind enough to give me what he had on my line. I have not gotten my line put on my computer as yet, but have quite a bit of information. Also, was not aware that I needed to quote where I got all of my information at the time I was copying it down, but perhaps someone else can verify it farther. I got much of it from living relatives or their decendants who I was able to locate. I do not have too much time to work on it, but will be glad to give out information to anyone who requests it.
