As I recall, Daniel Boone was a magistrate for a large area in eastern Missouri for a time before 1803 when the Louisiana Purchase was negotiated; then he was disenfranchised by the U.S. government. As a matter of fact, when the Louisiana Purchase went into effect, he also lost large land holdings and had to appeal to Congress for regress. At his home in Defiance, MO there was a "Judgement Tree" under which legal arguments were heard and decisions made. The tree no longer is there, only a stump. Those of you who have visited Daniel Boone's homeplace will recall this. The above is from memory.
