Friends, I am the last person who would use these lists for a virus warning. They are not only off subject, but many are hoaxes and try to lure us into perpetuating them by sending them on. Today, I make an exception as I believe genealogists are particularly vulnerable to this one. Since this morning I've received 5 emails from the same person with whom I've never corresponded. Each had a genealogy related subject such as "pedigree chart," or "family group sheet," or someone's name like "Caleb Bostick." The dead giveaway that this is a virus is: 1 - each email contained no text, just attachments. 2 - there are always two, and only two, attachments. 3 - The first attachment is always named Part 1.1 4 - The second attachment always has the same name as the subject, and has double file extension - i.e., .xls.pif, or .doc.com, or .doc.pif. 5 - it takes a while to download the email as the total file size is about 200 KB. I have seen this pattern before, and I assure you it is a REAL virus. I don't recall the exact name of it, but think its a variant of one called Sircam, and its nasty. Do NOT click or open the attachments, just delete the email and you're OK. If you have received it and already opened it, download the latest virus update files for your virus software ASAP and scan immediately. My apologies for going off subject, but because of the nature of the subject line I thought it a particular threat to all of us.
