    2. Several of the courthouse records are completely destroyed as a result of Katrina. The catastrophe of Katrina has taught us all valuable lessons. One thing we can do for ourselves is scan all of our important documents, papers and pictures (copy driver's license, SS card, deeds, wills, vehicle titles and etc.). Burn EVERYTHING to CD's and put everything into CD cases. Give copies to different relatives, put a copy in a safe or safety deposit box. If you know someone who does not have a computer or scanner offer to do their documents. Although most people will never be in a hurricane there are other natural disasters such as a fire or tornado which can occur. Patti

    3. Several folks have written asking for a copy of the list of migrators I am working on. As soon as I get something "formalized", I'll ask the ed. of the Boone Society "Compass" to publish it, and I also plan for it to be an appendix to a book I'm working on. Right now, my list is not ready -- it is rather amorphous & a lot of it is in my head. Thanks to the folks who are adding names, and reasoning or proof behind those names. Kathryn

    3. Judy, there is a book titled OLD KENTUCKY ENTRIES AND DEEDS by Willard Rouse Jillson. It may be of help to you. It does show in the Lincoln County entries that Squire had 400A on Silver Creek in 1779 and 500A on Little Benson Creek in 1780. In the Fayette County entries he is shown with 500A in 1784 with no watercourse and over 20 entries in Jefferson County. 1. 1779 Migration, NC>KY
    2. Kathryn Weiss
    3. Hi Folks, I am currently working on a list of families who likely accompanied the Boone and Bryan (and Grant, etc) migration from Old Rowan & Surry (& other neighboring areas) - kinsmen and neighbors who left out together in the autumn of 1779. The typical description of this trek says "it was like an army coming out," and estimates run to several hundred people "led by Boone." Of course, quite a few of these same people (particularly the Bryan clan) returned a short year later, devastated by their Kentucky losses, so it's difficult to know just who was where when during this part of the RW. And, many people traveled back and forth quite a bit, from what I can tell. I have identified quite a few of the names, but not nearly all. Although I have "a pretty good list," I am unsure of some of the grown children of the Bryans & Boones, and other collateral families or heads of households. "Single riflemen's" names are also helpful! I am specifically looking at the autumn 1779 trip to KY, and at the return to NC in Sept. 1780 -- does anyone have names to add? Thanks, Kathryn

    2. Daniel Paxton
    3. Hi, Does anyone have any documentation on the relationship between Daniel Boone and William Wells Brown? William Wells Brown escaped from slavery in Kentucky in 1834 and went on to be come the an abolitionist orator and author. He was said to be the son of a slave who was the daughter of Daniel Boone. Also, did the Boone family own slaves (in North Carolina and Kentucky)? If so, does anyone have an information on the identity of these people? Thanks, Daniel Paxton

In a private ceremony in his office, Gov. Ernie Fletcher plans to sign documents that designate U.S. 25E in southeastern Kentucky the Daniel Boone-Cumber land Gap Wilderness Trail. "This is a great day, not only for the Boone family, but also for everyone who appreciates the sacrifices and accomplishments of our pioneer ancestors who settled this great commonwealth and this great country," said Rochelle Cochran, president of the Boone Society, a national group of descendants of the explorer. During a previous gubernatorial administration, the Daniel Boone Parkway, which winds through the mountains of southeastern Kentucky, was renamed for U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, who has represented the area for more than two decades and, at the time, had managed to earmark $13 million in federal funds that allowed tolls to be removed from the state road. Rogers, who was not consulted about the name change in 2003, has stayed out of the fray for the most part. The gesture, though, did not sit well with Boone descendants and others who bemoaned the sacrifice of history for a few federal dollars. "You may as well melt down the Liberty Bell," Cochran, who claims to be a long-removed niece of the explorer, said at the time. Since then, several attempts have been made to restore Boone's name to the road or find an alternative. At one point, the late Gov. Louie Nunn offered to have his name taken off a different toll road so Rogers could get the honor. A proposal in the 2004 General Assembly to have the parkway share the names of Boone and Rogers failed. Fletcher's office confirmed the change would take place today but provided no other details. In an e-mail to the Associated Press, Cochran said she planned to attend the signing in Fletcher's office along with at least two other Boone descendants. Boone is the stuff of history and lore in Kentucky, credited with opening the west to exploration by crossing the Cumberland Gap and opening the Wilderness Road. Boone, who lived from 1734 to 1820, has his name on towns, festivals, businesses and even a national forest. U.S. 25E goes from Interstate 75 to the Cumberland Gap tunnel into Tennessee virtually at the point where the two states intersect with Virginia. Coincidentally, the burial place of Daniel and Rebecca Boone at the Frankfort cemetery is on a bluff overlooking the Kentucky Capitol, where the signing ceremony will take place.
