WISHING EVERYONE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR Jerry W. Scott
If you take the word riparian in the records of Tate's Creek Baptist Church minutes in the contexted of the sentence the word probably was repairing. Most of the early settlers would have spelled the word as it was said in their vernacula. Thus repairin would have become riparian. My wife believes it's a misspelling or transcription of the word "repairing." Also, drop the comma. Therefore, it would read "... what they think necessary to be done in REPAIRING the meeting house, by next meeting." If she is right, it demonstrates the inherent risks of using secondary sources and the importance of reviewing original (primary) sources. Below is an entry I missed last night from (sub-title) "Selected minutes of Tates... ." Does anyone understand the use of the word "riparian" in the statement below? Since a riparian is an edge of a water body or stream, could the statement be addressing the development of a plan to protect an eroding stream bank near the church? Just a guess. Chet, Thanks for posting this information. By chance, do you see the names Bradley, Grimes, Bryan, Sharp, Frank, Logan, or Alexander listed from the pages you copied? My ancestor Leonard Keeling Bradley married Mary "Polly" Boone, daughter of Samuel Boone and Sarah Day. Their oldest son Terry Bradley (my gggg grandfather) married Nancy Bryan Grimes, granddaughter of Mary Boone and William Bryan. I am also descended through L.K. Bradley's son Squire Boone Bradley who married Lucetta Estes Sharp. Additionally, I am researching my gggg grandfather Timothy Logan who migrated from North Carolina with the Boone family (or so the "legend" says), and married Sarah Boone. Mary Louise, I have seen the name Boon spelled both ways in my husband's family. My husband is related to George Boone, Joseph Boone, Squire Boone's brother. Yet when I found his great-grandmothers maiden name I have seen it Boon and Boone. So it goes to show you have to look at Boone and Boon in order to figure out how to spell it to locate your Boone family. I have had to look at other spellings on other family surnames. Kathryn, et al. You are likely right about the subject Squire Boone being the son of George and Nancy. According to Spraker, this Squire married Mourning Grubbs in 1808 (Madison Co., KY - location of Tates Cr.). Mourning was the daughter of Higgason and Lucy Grubbs, and according to Reflections, Higgason Grubbs was a trustee of Boonesborough in 1787 and a member of Tates Creek Baptist Church! Good circumstantial evidence. Please note that I only photocopied a few selected pages from the manuscript. I don't remember if it was bound (though I think it was), how many pages it contained (photocopy margins on the selected pages indicate about 50 pages), or if it was copy righted. You need to contact KY Historical Society, where the manuscript is held (100 w. Broadway, Frankfort, KY 40601), for the correct information. Chet ****************** Following are all of the Boone related quotations from Reflections. Reflections in the Wind, Reliving A Memorable ERA in Northern Madison County by Guypsie Lee Cosby Jones (written below her name in pencil is: 460 Whitlock Rd., Richmond, KY 40475, 606-623-3289) p. 2 - Gives the 10 trustees of Boonesborough in 1787 (from Richmond Register, July 31, 1982) - seven of whom are members of the Tates Creek Baptist Church. Grubbs is listed as one of the trustees. The church was found by Andrew Tribble, a pastor from a Baptist church in Albemarle Co., VA. "He found congenial spirits in Samuel Tate and George Boone already settled in Madison County, and organized the Tates Creek Separate Baptist Church at Shallow Ford in 1786. Prominent among the pioneer members were the Boones, Hoys, Chenaults, Jarmans, Newlands, Woods, Tinstalls, Grubbs, Goodloes, and Lipscombs. Besides Andrew Tribble, its pioneer ministers were George Boone, Thomas Jarman, David Chenault, and Richard Morton." p. 3 (Title) "Minutes of the Eightieth Meeting of the Tates Creek Association of United Baptists Held with the Red Lick Church, Madison County, Kentucky on August 26, and 27 Days 1873 by D.A. Chenault." (Subject Title) "History of Tates Creek Church" "I find ... two Tates Creek churches designed: Tates Creek log and stone meeting houses, in the same vicinity. The log under the protection of the Tanner Station, the stone the Hoy Station, whose base was about seven miles from the old Boonesborough Fort." [I believe "I" in this sentence is Gypsie Jones and not Chenault.] "The Tates Creek stone house church, some of whose most noted efforts I propose to notice was constituted about 1786; Andrew Tribble, appearing as her officiating pastor, and continued to serve her in that capacity until 1819... ." p. 7 (Subject Title) "Selected minutes of Tates Creek Baptist Church, from the original handwritten minutes at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky." [I did not copy all "selected minutes" below, but only those relating to Boone.] "June the first Saturday, 1789 George Boone restored to fellowship. Ebenezer Parks restored to fellowship. James Berry - Clerk." "July the first Saturday, 1799 A committee was formed to discuss a brothers conduct and said, the brothers conduct was unseemly and from a review of his ministerial character, could not be countenanced by those who love the interests of religion. signed by, Christopher Harris-Moderator Squire Boone - Clerk" p. 8 "1802 Nancy Boone joined by letter." "February 1805 Nancy Boone granted a letter of dismission." p. 9 "August 1805 A charge against George Boone by John Turner but not investigated. George Boone against Archibald Wood laid over for further investigation." "August 1809 A charge leveled against George Boone for bringing suit against Bro. Talbot and Brethren Josiah Phelps, and John Weigle appointed to cite him to attend next meeting.' "January 1810 Bro. George Boone is acquitted by the church. The Bro. George Boone is granted a letter of dismission." "1816 John Boone joined by experience." Janice, There may be no e on the end of Boon, now, but someone could have changed the spelling someplace along the way. So don't discount the e when posting and post on both Boon and Boone message boards. I have seen my Boone ancestors name spelled both ways especially depending on who it was doing the writing or reporting. The name changes were census, land deeds, wills and other documents. Thanks. Could the Squire Boone at Tate's Creek Baptist June 1799 be another s/o George & Nancy Linville Boone? Squire-2's sons said: "In '80 - '81, he acted as a justice, & married several couples at the old Station in '80." Moses Boone "Never made a profession of religion - though so inclined: could not, as Ths. S. Hinde says, have been at the great Cane Ridge meeting in 1802, & converted there. Was generous - too much so for his own good; very indifferent about property, money, &c." Isaiah Boone "The ancestry were Quakers & Squire Boone (my informant's father, seemed to share in that faith - so E. M. Boone thinks was his father's belief)." Enoch Morgan Boone, to LCD 1858 [Enoch was Baptist] Chester, maybe you could give us the details of what the book said about George & Squire? Kathryn
Dorothy Thanks for your excellent suggestions. I think you are right, but it still leaves a couple of questions about Nancy. Why would Nancy (Ann) BOONE (George's wife) join the church so late (1802) since her husband was an initial members of the church in 1786? This is especially confusing when you consider, according to Reflections in the Wind, that George BOONE was one of the church's ministers. The Boones may have left the church because of troubles with it or they left the area for a period (before moving to Shelby County) because George was "restored to fellowship" on June 1, 1798. Though Nancy left the church in 1805, it seems that George continued (?) to be a member until 1810. In January 1810, George BOONE (know as "Bro.") was acquitted by the church for bringing a "suit against Bro. TABLOT and Brethren Josiah PHELPS" and granted a letter of dismission. This may be the time that George and Nancy moved to Shelby Co because according to Spraker, George and "Anna" or "Ann" were living in Shelby in 1811. More pieces for the George BOONE (1739-1820) puzzle. The Squire BOONE mentioned in Reflections on July 1, 1799, as a committee clerk for the church could be Daniel BOONE's brother who when to Missouri with Daniel in September 1799. Well, at least the timing is right. But, according to W. Fred Conway in The Incredible Adventures of Daniel Boone's Kid Brother - Squire, Squire lived in Shelby from 1795-1799 before joining Daniel's Missouri move. Maybe Squire was visiting George before leaving with Daniel, and since he (Squire) was once a Baptist minister, the church might have asked him to serve on the committee??????? Just throwing ideas around. I wish the Boone's had been a little less family traditionalists and more creative in naming their children - just look at the designer names given to many of our football players! Ha! It is possible that the Nancy BOONE granted a letter of dismission Feb 1805 is Nancy Ann LINVILLE b 1744 d 28 March 1814 spouse of George BOONE.b 1739 . They had a son John b 1769 who in 1818 went to Callaway Co, MO. He maybe the John BOONE who in 1816 "joined by experience." Anyone else have any Boone's they think Chester could be referring, too. I don't know if this is who you are referring to but it could be. My John Boone was born abt 1795 in Adams County, Ohio. He is the son of Joseph Boone Jr. and Mary DeHart. The 3 of the children of Joseph Boone and Elizabeth Warren were Jacob, Ovid and Thomas, Boone were known to travel with their cousin Daniel Boone on his trips to Kentucky. Jacob moved to Limestone now Maysville, Mason County, Ky in 1786. with his brothers, Ovid and Thomas and Daniel Boone. Jacob Boone settled in Limestone now Maysville, Kentucky. He owned a tavern and operated a ferry to cross the Ohio River. Jacob had a son John Boone and a sister Nancy Boone born 14 Sept 1775. Nancy married John Mitchell born 1761 and he died 4 Dec 1830 burial Pioneer Cemetery in Maysville located behind the Historical Library on Sutton Street. Nancy Boone was born 14 Sept 1775 and died 30 June 1821 in Maysville, Mason County, Ky. Dear Brd While reading Reflections In The Wind; Reliving A Memorable Era In Northern Madison County by Gypsie Lee Cosby Jones (held by KY Hist. Soc. in Frankford), I noticed that George, Squire, Nancy, and John Boone are mentioned as associates of the Tates Creek Baptisth Church (found 1786) in Madison Co., KY. George and Squire are surely the brothers of Daniel, but who are Nancy and John Boone? The minutes of the church give the following: June 1, 1798 - George Boone restored to fellowship July 1, 1799 - committee clerk Squire Boone 1802 (before April) - Nancy Boone joined by letter Feb 1805 - Nancy Boone granted a letter of dismission 1816 - John Boone joined by experience I would appreciate your thoughts. Chet PS: Let me know if you would like the few details about George and Squire Boone that I did not describe above.
Does anyone have information about James Boone listed on the Hertford County 1779 tax list? He is not on the 1790 census but Mary Boone is with 1m 16 & up including heads of households, 2 m under 16, and 2f. I believe this James and Mary Boone could be the parents of my Bryant Boone who was born in Hertford County 15 Dec 1789. Mary Boone, Bryant Boone and his family moved to the Nashville, TN area in the early 1800's and then to Graves County, KY where he died 21 Jan 1837. Mary was still living and age 98 on the Graves County 1850 census. There is a remote possibility that Mary's maiden name was Hare. DNA has shown this Boone family comes from the Isle of Wight County, VA Boones. Mary Louise Outgoing mail checked by Norton AntiVirus
Hello, Starting back again on my husband's Boone ancestry ... His g-grandmother was Lily Boone (b. abt. 1861 accoring to the 1900 census) who married George Kennedy and lived in Harrisburg, PA. In the 1900 census, it has what looks like "Martha" Boone living with them (b. 1822) and listed as mother-in-law. HOWEVER, I cannot find any Martha Boone in any U.S. census (via ancestry.com) that would even remotely fit. I do find a Lilly Boon, age 3, in the 1860 census in Reading, PA. I also find Lillie Boone in the 1870 census (same person) age 12 in Reading. I believe this Lily is my husband's gg-grandmother as there are no other Lily Boones to be found (and even though it looks like a "Martha" on the census to be her mother). This Lily is the d/o Samuel Boone (b. abt. 1820 - I'll call him Jr.) and Almira Van Horn (found Almira's parents living with them in the 1850 Spruce Ward, Reading, Berks Co., PA census and this is why I know her maiden name). I then looked for all Boones in Reading in the 1850 census. I found a Samuel Boone (b. abt. 1795 - I'll call him Sr.) and wife Sarah (b. abt. 1800) whom I believe is Samuel Jr.'s father due to the fact that James Vanhorn is living with him (James being Samuel Jr.'s brother-in-law - he was born in the same place as Almira and her parents - New Jersey). Also living with Samuel Sr. is Joshua Boone (b. abt. 1889) whom I am assuming to be his brother. I then got on ancestry.com and found that Samuel's wife's name was Sarah Snyder - and he and his brother, Joshua, were the sons of Joshua Boone and Hannah Griffith (or Lee?) - and Joshua being the son of James Boone and Mary Foulke. I would love some feedback/information on the above. Thank you, Linda Smith
