    1. [BOONE-L] The Boone Society Reunion July 31-August 4, 2002
    2. The Boone Society Reunion July 31-August 4, 2002 Tentative plans so far (a year ahead of time) are as follows: 1- Thursday, Aug.1__ Dr. Jim Tompkins, Professor of Oregon History at Portland State University, will be our tour guide for a bus trip on the Columbia Gorge portion of the Oregon Trail. We will stop at Multnomah Falls around Mt. Hood and at Timberline Lodge at the base of the mountain (we are investigating a possible lunch there). We will then travel west down Laurel Hill where wagons, oxen, horses and emigrants were lowered by rope. Previous to 1846, travel to the Willamette Valley was by the Columbia River, a treacherous and dangerous route. Some of Jim Tompkins’ ancestors came this way. 2- For an evening program, we will be honored with the presence of William Cannon, the only Revolutionary War soldier buried in Oregon, portrayed by Tom Laidlaw- actor, writer, historian and master storyteller who holds a BS Degree in Theater Arts from Portland State Univ. He has been a volunteer blacksmith and interpreter at Ft. Vancouver, WA for five years. 3-A report on historian Ken Kamper’s work with the Daniel Boone and Frontier Families Association will include their efforts to protect and preserve Boone history and locations, as well as a program on the many Boone sites in Missouri. 4-Friday, Aug. 2 __A trip to the Oregon Coast. 5- Saturday, Aug. 3__An afternoon tour of the Oregon Interpretive Center, featuring Boone Memorabilia. 1. [BOONE-L] Our Cousin Pat Boone
    2. From THE DAILY JOURNAL Thurs., Sept. 27, 200l Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana Beverly Hills, Calif. Patriotism inspires Boone Entertainer Pat Boone says he is invigorated by the passionate displays of red, white, and blue since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. "I haven't seen this kind of patriotic fever in years," Boone said Tuesday in announcing the re-release of his 30-year-old album, AMERICAN GLORY, which features a dozen tunes, including "Anchors Weigh" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." "For years, no one has been regularly recording these wonderful American patriotic songs," the 67-year-old singer said. "Now, everyone wants to hear them again." Submitted by Ivan D. Lancaster

    1. [BOONE-L] Back again
    2. Hi All, A multi-list posting to let everyone know my primary PC is FINALLY about 95% recovered from the impact of the email virus, genealogy related subjects, that got by all my years of experience with computers and what I thought was very good virus protection. I still have not been able to identify it exactly, but that doesn't matter anymore. It was a grueling and time consuming process to get back to where I am. I won't bore you with the details. Because of other simple protections I have in place, I did not lose any data. And, my backup computer didn't miss a beat on receiving all your emails. I don't want to start a general discussion of viruses on this list. If you'd like to discuss viruses RootsWeb has an excellent mailing list - a neat little community of its own with many very helpful and knowledgeable people subscribing. And many helpful novices, as well. You can learn more about the list and subscribe here: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Internet_Help/VIRUS-DISCUSSION.html. As you might expect, its a busy list, so you might consider digest mode if choose to sub to it. I guess my message on viruses is don't trust emails with genealogy subjects and update your virus definition files at least weekly. Regards to all, Larry PS - being able to begin to focus back on genealogy has been very helpful to me through what is happening right now. Just knowing that our ancestors faced great crises, and our homeland endured, is very important somehow. I fear its time for our sacrifices for freedom again. I'm concerned, but not overly worried. We have their example to follow. But, I pray for the world. -- Larry DeFrance, Helena Montana USA Caretaker: The DeFrance Family Home Page - http://www.helenet.com/~larry/fam_home.html The DeFrance Mailing List - [email protected], The Susquehanna River Mailing List - [email protected] Co-Caretaker: The Boone Mailing list - [email protected]

    1. [BOONE-L] Parents of James D. Boone (Abt 1799-1869)
    2. Arthur Hopkins
    3. Dear List, I have found a connection between my Great-Grandfather, James Thomas Boone, Samuel L. Boone, his Father, and James D. Boone, his Grandfather. The first record I have for James D. Boone is his marriage in Frederick County, Maryland to Catherine Ann Smith on 23 Apr 1826. I'm now trying to find who his parents were. James, senior, was born in Pennsylvania, was a blacksmith, and lived in Frederick County for several years after his marriage. He and his family then moved to Hardy County, Virginia. A few years later, he and some of his family moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio, where he died. James, junior, was also a blacksmith; his father, Samuel, was a shoe maker. If anyone has any information, clues, or tips about James, senior, I'd very much appreciate hearing from them. I'm hoping the information about their occupations will give some indication about where they fit into the Boone family lineage. Art Hopkins Arthur Hopkins Bend, Oregon www.coinet.com/~arthopkins/

    3. If you want an idea on how the Germans are reacting to our tragedy, read the letter below from my friend who is working for the US Army for the next three years over there. Below her response is my original e-mail to her. ----- Original Message ----- Bobby, The Germans have been very sympathetic and expressed their grave concern for our loss and well being. They have been leaving flowers, candles and notes at the gates of American Kaserne's (post) all over Europe. We are under a high level of security with car searches and limited access to facilities. The German police are also helping guard the entrance to the facilites. I just got TV last night. Wasn't going to spend the big bucks to get the satellite and reciever for AFN (Armed Forces Network), but wanted to get American CNN instead of European, so I bit the bullet and did it, for bout $850. Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy. - Ralph Waldo Emerson ============ Hey Linda, I'm just wondering what kind of atmosphere you, as an American, are experiencing being in a foriegn country. I am assuming you are in a friendly country, Germany, isn't that right? Things over here, that I can tell/feel, are still very sad. I'm doing something I've never done before- I'm listening to the speeches our Chief of Staff is making on T-V, and trying to keep up to par with what the news in general is telling us. Do you have access to American T-V or radio news? I hope all is well with you while you are so far away from home! God Bless you, and I will remember you in my prayers when I do remember to pray. 3. Joy, I need to talk to you in regards to the mail you sent the list about Captain McNeil, and the proposed memorial mail you sent the list last night. I have an important reply regarding that mail from when I Fwd:/posted it to BLEVINS-L. It is something I will need to forward you, and it is something that the mail server cannot handle - (HTML or something). Is Captain McNeal available for you by e-mail, or any other media? It is a MUST READ letter written by Reverend Charles Stanley - NOT "THE" Reverend Charles Stanley, but another one with the same name. His letter had me teary eyed, and shivering down my spine the whole time I read it. [email protected] Bobby Blevins

On December 3,1999 a fire in a Worcester MA cold storage warehouse trapped and killed 6 fire fighters. During the long vigil for the Worcester fire someone provided us with a visible showing of our concern and respect for those that have been taken from us during that incident. 2. From the Daily Journal newspaper of Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana ''OFFICER FROM INDIANA An Army officer from Indiana was "at ground zero" when an aircraft that was hijacked by terrorists slammed into the Pentagon, his son said. Lt. Col. Canfield Boone was among 189 people on a list of those still unaccounted for that was released Friday by the Defense Department. Boone, 53, was in his office on the second floor of the Pentagon's E-ring, "right exactly where the plane hit" Tuesday morning, his son Andy Boone said in a telephone interview from the family home in Fairfax, Va. "He was at ground zero when the plane hit," 21-year-old Andy Boone said. Defense officials told family members at a briefing Thursday that they should not expect any more survivors from the Pentagon crash, he said. Canfield Boone grew up in Milan, and later moved to Indianapolis, where he attended Butler University and met his wife, Linda." Submitted by Ivan D. Lancaster of Trafalgar, Indiana

    1. [BOONE-L] Thanks to Search Helpers!
    2. This is a note of thanks to the many generous people who helped me find my Oregon ancestors, and even a descendant of those ancestors! When I started my search for my grandmother Minnie Boone’s family, I received much help from many wonderful people. There are lots of Boones, and many are well documented, giving searchers somewhere to start. And I found my Boones, as well as some of their descendants and many, many distant Boone cousins. When I started to search for my Boone grandmother’s mother’s Thompson people, things got much more difficult. Thompson, I think, is almost in a league with Jones and Smith! But I've found many of them! My sincere thanks go to the following: Oliver Orange Burns_ my great grandmother, Martha Alice Thompson Boone’s son-in-law, long deceased, who bothered to listen to an old lady and then bothered to record on her death certificate the town and state where she was born. This was a key clue. Arlene Curry Buschert_ a Boone cousin and native Oregonian, who looked up and copied the 4-18-1869 marriage record of my great grandmother, Martha Alice Thompson and great grandfather, Theodore Warner Boone. Jane Hutchings, Don Houck, Lisa Jones and Jan_ all Linn County Oregon volunteers who have done invaluable census, cemetery and other look ups for me. Glenn Harrison_Linn County Historical Society, who bothered to let me know that there was a Sara L. Tanner who registered as researching Linn County Thompsons. It has taken a while, but the connection has been made, and I am now 99.9% sure that Sara’s great grandfather was George Clinton Thompson and that he and my great grandmother, Martha Alice Thompson, were brother and sister. Sara and I are third cousins. I'm sure I have left out other people who helped in many different ways. I thank them too! There are still many Thompson pieces to be found and assembled, but what a great start! Sincere thanks, Geraldine Ingersoll

    1. [BOONE-L] Checking In
    2. Larry DeFrance
    3. Hi All, Its good to start to hear from you again. I've been concerned about our little community. So I just thought I'd check in and let you know that my immediate family is all OK. We're hurting in so many ways, but we're together, healing, and starting to "hunker down" and get prepared for what we family elders think we see coming. And, I've never seen anything like this in my 58 years. Thank heavens my Dad and his older brother are still alive. Their counsel will be invaluable to me. And they're the elders in charge - still. I've been working with Rochelle, our Boone Compass editor, on an article about my Captain Hawkins Boone for an upcoming issue of the Boone Society newsletter. Rochelle has been very, very helpful to (and patient with) me. Its been many years since I've published anything on paper. I'm terribly excited about this. It will be great big step towards setting the printed record right on at least one old Rev War era story about the Pennsylvania Boon(e)'s. And, Compass reaches many of our Greatest Generation's genealogists who aren't online. I can't wait for the letters I hope to receive from them. Barbara, thanks for the information about Colonel Canfield D. Boone. I mourn all the lives we've lost. But his death makes it all just that much more personal to me. We've lost another Boone to war. He's the first Boone casualty I've heard of. I pray for his family - and all our families. I'm a helpless and eternal optimist. As I search for a silver lining in the monstrous cloud over our nation, I see a world staring to come together, in greater concert than I've ever witnessed. That gives me great hope for the future of mother earth, and my homeland. My research focus has been very narrow, as many of you know. As I've learned more and more about the lives and times of my ancestors, I've often pondered, with amazement, over what they went through to help carve out our great nation. I feel like the world we now face will become as strange and challenging to us as theirs was to them. I know we can all rise to the challenges ahead. They taught us how important that is and, by their examples down through our history, they taught us what we need to do. 2. Gary & Vickie Pavelko
    3. According to our local radio station a few days ago, Gordan Sinclair gave this as an on-air editorial on his radio program back in 1973. The US had just pulled out of Vietnam, the stock market took a huge dip in response and the world was cheering that the US had it coming. By that evening it was picked up by radio stations all over the US and replayed here. It later was made into a record with all proceeds going to the Red Cross which had taken a huge hit from the tornadoes that went through that spring. Isn't it a shame that it is still relevant almost 30 years later? 3. Indeed, Cincinnati is showing support for Col. Boone, as well as all other victims of the catastrophes. Our son, who just opened a new sign company in downtown Cincinnati, made three 10 feet high signs which are postcards. The stamp is the emblem for the City. They were placed in a public place for all citizens to write on. I guess the length would be about 15 or 20 feet long. And Steve was amazed that they were full in just a day or two! They are being taken to three of the disaster sites to let New Yorkers know they are being supported with thoughts and prayers of the folks in Cincinnati. Here in Oklahoma, one of the things we are doing is collecting over 6,000 teddy bears with personal notes attached....and of course more needful items, such as clothing and food, water and blood. The bears are primarily for the children of the families involved. Incidentally, a fire chief who helped after the Oklahoma bombing , was killed in the New York disaster. The address for sending notes to the New York firefighters was in the rootsweb site Larry gave us for posting and reading messages. I am at work, but will send the address when I get home tonight. I am sure it is really appreciated by them and by the families. Just had folks from Pittsburgh in our museum and there is a manufacturer of respiratory masks there due to the mining industry and they donated many of their products. Some of the schools made simple red, white and blue pins and sold them for a dollar apeice and raised quite a bit of money to send. 1. [BOONE-L] Colonel Canfield D. Boone
    2. For those who might want to know more about him..... Barbara Gill, Director The Boone Society Canfield D. Boone Monday, September 17, 2001; Page A17 (washingtonpost.com) Canfield D. Boone, 53, had recently been promoted to full colonel in the Army and worked in personnel in newly renovated offices at the Pentagon. A native of Milan, Ind., "Bud" Boone graduated from Butler University, where he majored in history and political science and met his wife, Linda, 52, a second-grade teacher, at Virginia Run Elementary School. "Half my life is gone," she said. "Half my past. Half my future. It's very hard." Their three children, Chris, 23, Andy, 21, and Jason, 18, "are very proud of him, that he served his country," their mother said. Boone sold insurance for Prudential and was an Army National Guardsman for several years before going on active duty in 1986. About10 years ago, the family moved to a two-story colonial in the Little Rocky Run subdivision in Fairfax County. The Boones belong to Centreville Presbyterian Church. A neighbor, Subra Bettadapur, described Boone as a "very nice" family man who walked the dog and worked on his lawn "just like all of us did." Linda Boone and her sons remember his sense of humor, which has helped them these past days. She recalled: "At restaurants, waitresses [handing him the check] would say, 'I'll take that when you're ready.' He'd always say, 'How about a week from next Thursday?' "-- Eugene L.
