Hello fellow listers I would like to let you know that my email address has been changed my new address is [email protected]
Is there a published source of the militiamen that were with Boone in his explorations of Kentucky during the 1770's. I have seen partial lists in various books, but never any book that gave all known associates in his discovery/exploration of the Kentucky frontier. I am specifically looking for any Myers, Wyatt, Cooper and anyone else who might have had family that settled in the central part of Kentucky especially to the east of Frankfort, Kentucky. Thanks very much Roger Cooper [email protected]
Thanks to everyone who reassured me that I was in fact using the correct address for the Boone Society page. My computer listened, looked for the site again and found it. Ched [email protected]
I tried to surf to the Boone Society site, but was forwarded to another unrelated page. My browser warned me that this was happening. What is the Boone Society site address? I used 'www.boonesociety.org' which was intercepted by 'zerosetup.com' Ched [email protected]
Not sure what the problem is. The zerosetup is affiliated with our server. I tried the site www.boonesociety.org and it worked. Perhaps either an anomaly with the server or perhaps an extra keystroke. Let me know if the problem continues. I am searching for any information on William H. SMITH listed as a Magistate in Phillips county in the 1820's. I believe he is the same William SMITH listed in this article I found in KY Records. Kentucky: A History of the State by Battle-Pierce-Kniffin 3 rd ed. 1886 J . P. SMITH , Warren co KY was born in Phillips co AR 24 July 1824 and is a son of William and Keziah Boone Smith, the former of whom , a native of Virginia , lived there most of his life but died in AR in 1841. His father, Phillip SMITH removed to Arkansas and died there at an advanced age. Subjects maternal grandfather John BOONE was a native of North Carolina , and immigrated to this state in an early day, afterward removed to Tennessee where he died. Subject was about a year old when his father died and his mother returned to Kentucky from Arkansas, and for a time made her home with her father . She afterward married Rev. Joseph FRANCEWAY and removed to Greensburg, KY where they remained eight years and then returned to this county. Soon afterwards Mr. FRANCEWAY died , leaving his widow with two children : John H. and Annie F. She then married Jesse BUNCH , one child was born of this union, Mary E. Mrs. BUNCH died in 1876. Subject married first, Mary, daughter of Timothy J. THOMAS, of Mississippi, this union was childless. He next married Mrs. Bettie, widow of Samuel GAINES, of this county, and a daughter of Wilson RITTER, of Barren county. She bore him four children : William E., Wallie G., Charles R., and Carrie H. Mrs. SMITH had by her first husband , two children , John B, and Mary E. GAINES. Mr. Smith owns 530 acres of fine land, well improved. He is a member of the Christian Church and of the Democratic Party. ~~~~~~~~~ (MY Notes) John BOONE was believed to be the son of Jonathan BOONE, older brother of Daniel. He was married first to Hannah/Henrietta STEWART who died possibly ca 1815. He next married Any (Anna ) GriderMITCHELL, widow of Charles MITCHELL and they raised a family of seventeen children. 1810 Warren co KY census John BOONE 1 m-10, 1 m 10-16, 1 m 26-45 2 f -10, 1 f 10-16, 1 f 16-26, 1 f 45 and up 1820 Warren co KY Census John Boon 2 m -10, 2 m 10-16, 2 m 18-26, 1 m 45 and up 3 f -10. 1 f 10-16, 1 f 16-26, 1 f 26- 45 Richmond Pearson BOONE first found on tax list St. Francis co. Dear Boone List, The following is something I happened across, and thought might be of interest to some of the members of this list. It comes from the site below, which is devoted to the history of Hampshire Count, West Virginia. Boone-Hawse License May 21, 1913 A marriage license was issued in Cumberland last Thursday to Curtis Abram Hawse, of Rio, and Hattie Belle Boone, of Rock Oak, this county. --from http://www.hampshirereview.com/hampshirehistory.htm Thu., September 27, 2000 [Note: Rio is in Hampshire County now, but Rock Oak is in Hardy County, just a bit south of the county line. Rock Oak and Rio are about 5-10 miles apart. May 21st was a Thursday so "last Thursday" must mean that the license was granted on Thursday, May 14, 1913.] Arthur Hopkins Bend, Oregon www.coinet.com/~arthopkins/

Once again I am posting this message in case there is a new Boone subscriber who might have the link I am looking for. My great grandfather was William Henry Boon, who was born in Erie County, NY in 1834. On the 1880 Census he said that his father was from Massachusetts and his mother from Vermont. So far the most likely ancestor I have found was a Francis Boon, b. in Upton, MA, who then moved to Uxbridge, MA, then to Vermont, and then to Erie County, NY. I know that Francis had lots of children by at least two and maybe more wives. But I have never been able to connect him or any of his known children to William Henry. William may have been the son of a preacher or minister (Baptist?). William later moved to Indiana (I think) and then to Iowa, where he married Polly Ann Houk, and they had 12 or 13 children in Iowa and Kansas. No one in the family has been able to find any record of his birth and the death certificate cannot be located in Kansas where he died. He did not serve in the military, so there are no records of parents there, either. We are quite sure William Henry was not related to Daniel, and apparently not to the other prominent Boone progenitors. My grandfather, John William Boon, insisted we were not English, but Dutch, and did not want an "e" on his last name. (But my grandmother, a stubborn old lady of English and Scottish stock, insisted on it.) If anyone out there knows about Francis or more about William Henry, please let me know. Charnee
There was a Jacob Boon, d. 1814 the son of German immigrant Johann Diel Bohne 1711-1764. This Jacob Boon (no kin to Daniel Boone) had two mills on Maggodee (Magoty) Creek in Franklin County, VA. Does anyone know if there is a relationship between this Jacob Boon and the John Boon who was the step father of Barbara Moyers? Barbara Moyers married Isaac Knaeff (Naff) son of Jacob Naff, Sr. in Franklin County, June 1, 1789. Please let me know if anyone has information on the ancestry of this John Boon. I was recently doing some research on the Hutchinson, Hickman, Nesbit, Wilson, Johnston, McClanahan families etc,. and I had no idea how inter-related they were...coming from Bourbon Co., KY and settling in Callaway, Boone, Clay, Cooper counties etc. The bios on the website for Bourbon Co., KY is excellent. These are the relatives of Daniel Boone - and it's a HUGE family. http://www.shawhan.com/bourbonfamilies.html I have been following the parents of Margaret Hutchinson who married Nathaniel Leonard at Ravenswood in Bunceton in Cooper Co. My ancestors were slaves in what appears to be a tremendous KY family whose ties stretch from Bourbon Co. KY to Pittsburg, PA and slave transactions in every direction. It has taken me awhile, but I finally have figured out that: Margaret's parents were Margaret Hickman and William Hutchinson -- they had 8 children: I ordered some documents via the Western Historical Manuscript Collection and it includes a letter from Hactier {not sure of spelling} Warfield to Wm. Hutchinson dated Aug. 22, 1882...he is the grandson of Lewis Hutchinson in Pittsburg PA... a son of William and Margaret Hutchinson noted above -- and he is looking for answers about his ancestors. Charles E. Leonard responds to Wm. Hutchison Esq., in 1893 that he knows little about the Hickmans. Another letter details all the children of William and Margaret born in Paris KY beginning with Jane in 1790. I will post this letter and its contents separately if anyone is interested. Let me know.. I can scan the letter or transcribe it.. it's four pages. FYI: Margaret's 1st husband was William H. Johnston -- his parents were Capt. William H. Johnston and Rachel Spears. William H. Johnston's sister Eliza Keller Johnston married Capt. David McClanahan Hickman. This lead me to discover that the Hickmans and Hutchinsons are a huge family related also to the Bass, Shackelford, Prewitt, Bass, Waller & McGavock... which in reviewing probate records etc., spans several decades of slave transactions between them all. I am somewhat discouraged. Interestingly enough Rachel's mother Elizabeth Spears estate was probated in Boone Co., -- the Spears have an interesting history. In an attempt to figure out more about William H. Johnston's mother Rachel Spears... I found a great detailed background about the Spears family.. and their connection to the Frys... amazing. http://www.shawhan.com/fry.html Here's a link on Noah Spears -- a son.. http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/scott/spears.n.txt I went through the Boone Co wills and administrations and compiled sort of a family tree of transactions for Hutchinson, Hickman, Johnston, Cave, Keene, Prewitt, Nesbit etc. and a couple caught my eye and made me check into SPEARS more: Spears, Elizabeth - No. 261 - Will. Wm. Johnston, Robt. Thomas, Execs. Gr. Jan. 23, 1837. F.S. Feb. 16, 1848. Heirs of s. Solomon Spears, s. Abram, s. Noah, heirs of d. Rebecca Matson, dec., Elizabeth Grimes [m. Cuthbert Hickman], Sarah Jones, Rachel Johnston, gr. d. Elvira Thomas, Wm Johnston, gr. s., Jacob S. Johnston, Gr.s. Noah S. Johnsont, John T. M. Johnston, Wit. Z. Milloney and Jonathan Douglas. [Rachel Spears m. Capt. William H. Johnston] Capt. William H. Johnston's estate was also probated in Boone Co., No 907; Jan 16, 185. and the final settlement Feb. 10, 1854 -- I don't have these documents... but I would be very interested in slaves in the family for both. Son William H. Johnston proceded both of his parents in death... and his slaves went to his widow Margaret Hutchinson via her brother James Hutchinson who sold them to Nathaniel Leonard. My sense is that the slaves owned by William H. Hutchinson may have been bequeathed to him via his grandfather SOLOMON SPEARS and/or other relatives & purchases in Bourbon Co. This part of my research is daunting. A review of Boone Co., early estate records nearly blew my mind... the rental and sale of slaves and their children to family members and at auctions. I'm at a loss at the moment to tell you how unbelievable it all is... but if I could remind you all... who are researching MO ancestors, please keep your eyes peeled for slaves mentioned in your family records and help us [me and others] recreate what we can of our long lost families. Don't forget to check Early Bourbon Co., KY families here: http://www.shawhan.com/bourbonfamilies.html Also I just realized that the William Hutchinson in St. Louis in the early 1900s was the son of Benjamin Franklin Hutchinson -- who died in Kirkwood, St. Louis, MO in 1876. I've got a letter that his son William wrote to his wife Mary -- apologizing after an argument... a very sweet letter. Also I also didn't realize that Eliza Ann Hutchison who married Thomas Hickman married a second time to Mr. Ormrod and there was one son. Charles E. Leonard notes this in a letter to a cousin about the family tree.
