I'm researching Abigail, wife of Thomas Bonner 1690-1765 of Beaufort Co NC. Does anyone have any recent discoveries? There have long been many guesses as to her maiden name and parents: could be Abigail Daw, daughter of Nicholas Daw and Abigail Wallis; or Abigail Jones, daughter of Edward Jones; or Abigail Butt, daughter of Richard and Dinah Butt; or that she was a Bryan(t). I don't know where these guesses came from... I have done some digging on each of these specific families, and I believe it's safe to say that none of the first three are correct: Our Abigail was born c.1694, and had children born c1714, 1715, 1719. For DAW -- It looks like Abigail Wallis's father William was born c1673, and so Abigail (wife of Nicholas Daw) could be born as early as 1690, or maybe as late as 1730 -- regardless, this is too late to be the mother of Abigail, wife of Thomas Bonner. For JONES -- The IGI says this Abigail Jones is born 1694. However, Thomas and Abigail were already married for several years when Edward's will was written 1718, and he names his daughter as Abigail Jones, not Bonner. For BUTT -- If Richard was born c1688 according to posts on Rootsweb, then his daughter Abigail would be born at a minimum around 1705/1715, or later according to Richard's marriage date of 1729, too late to be Abigail, wife of Thomas Bonner. So I'm going with the theory of "Bryan(t)" as this doesn't yet have attached parents. Of course, she could still be a Daw, Butt, or Jones - just not the parents suggested above. ---------------- Ray Gurganus [email protected] www.gurganus.org
