    1. Re: [BONNER] More BONNER DNA Results
    2. I am a descendant of Henry Bonner, III from the Albermarle County of North Carolina area. Have you had any test from this line? I'd like to know more about the details. Thanks You, Kenny Shackleford

    1. [BONNER] More BONNER DNA Results
    2. Bonner, Gregg
    3. Hi Folks, We have had another DNA result come in. This time it was what I call type "C" BONNER DNA - so that makes three of those. As I understand it, there has been no good paper evidence to link the two of the type C samples to this third one, although I believe people have had their hunches about it. So my view is that this is a kind of success. I have not had a chance to talk with all three of the type C participants, so don't quote me on any of the above. I have updated the results table, and will update the network diagram later tonight. You can find those things here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/> I have my own bias in the project, of course, and one of my interests was to try to determine if there is a relationship between Henry Bonner (d. ABT. 1738) of North Carolina and "my" BONNER clan of Prince George County, Virginia. I claim the results thus far indicate that Henry Bonner would have been a type "C", or something very close to that. Therefore, I have done some simple calculations, and this is what I came up with: Assuming Dempsey Bonner, Sr. is gg-grandson of Henry Bonner, and Jordan Bonner is g-grandson of Henry Bonner, and assuming a typical 25 years per generation, and knowing the mutation rate of the Y-chromosome, and noting that there are at least 8 mutations between type "C" BONNER DNA (a la Jordan and Dempsey) and type "B" BONNER DNA (my type) = my common ancestor with Jordan Bonner and Dempsey Bonner lived circa 1,000 B.C. So I call that no relation. Our closest (non-identical) samples ("D" vs. "E") have a common ancestor more like 1,000 A.D. I would now really like to get some samples from descendants of the line of those John BONNERs who lived in Surrey/Sussex Counties, Virginia (viz., Albemarle Parish) in the very late 1600s and through at least the 1700s. ...And of course, the search continues on all fronts - more later, I am sure. Cheers :) Gregg Bonner BONNER Surname DNA Project Group Administrator

    1. [BONNER] DNA Project explanation
    2. Bonner, Gregg
    3. Hi Folks, I have seen several questions regarding DNA projects, and I think a lot of them can be boiled down to the following: Let's say two people get tested, and their results are like this: Person #1: 13 24 14 11 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 Person #2: 13 25 14 11 11 15 12 12 13 13 13 29 Those results look pretty similar, yes? So what is the most likely relationship of person #1 to person #2? Identical twins? Brothers? 2nd Cousins? 15th cousins? I have included an analysis of this type of scenario for the BONNER DNA project as a whole thus far, and included it as a section called "How to read the data table and network diagram". I am sure the section is not perfect. Please e-mail me with any additional questions or comments for improvement. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna And as always, please help me recruit male BONNERs for the project :) Cheers, Gregg Bonner BONNER-L ListAdmin BONNER Surname DNA Project Group Administator

    1. [BONNER] BONNER DNA Project update / List statistics
    2. Bonner, Gregg
    3. Hi Listers, Today we have the results of yet another BONNER DNA test. The results are another of the "Type 'C' " variety. So we have a case of confirmation here, in my estimation. As results continue to arrive, it seems that in this case we will be able to develop a litmus test for various BONNER lines. Right now there are 5 types of BONNER DNA, and 3 of these have been confirmed. Clearly, the ability to identify and confirm DNA "types" is dependent on getting volunteers - hint hint. At some point in the near future, I will begin to add links from the confirmed DNA type(s) to their known originator(s). But for now, you can view the updated results table, and the nifty little diagram which shows how genetically close the various BONNER groups are, & &c. by clicking here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/> (Just as a pointer, it should be noted that it is clear that the name BONNER had independent derivations. The separation between groups "A" and group "C" (for example) are so large that the common origin between the two groups (if exists) PRE-DATED the use of BONNER as a surname. But groups "D" and "E" are fairly close, and some relationship may be found between them, although neither of these DNA types is confirmed as of yet.) Since I am writing, I will take this opportunity to point out that there are about 50 people subscribed to BONNER-D, and another 125 subscribed to BONNER-L. With so many subscribers, I would think there would be more activity on this list. That's another hint hint from your friendly BONNER ListAdmin :) I am sure there are several/many of you who have never posted your line or query. Please do. You never know what help you may get, or what help your post my provide to others on the list, or anywhere into the future of the list. 1. [BONNER] Descendants of William Stegall Bonner
    2. Descendants of William Stegall Bonner Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM STEGALL7 BONNER (JOHN THOMAS6, ZADDOCK5, THOMAS4, HENRY3, HENRY2, HENRY1) was born February 20, 1846 in Carroll County, Georgia, and died May 07, 1923 in Carroll County, Georgia. He married (1) MARTHA ANN JONES December 31, 1868 in Carroll County, Georgia, daughter of NASA JONES and MARY BATES. She was born March 25, 1840 in Coweta County, Georgia, and died Unknown in Carroll County, Georgia. He married (2) MISSOURI CAROLINE JONES August 29, 1878 in Carroll County, Georgia, daughter of NASA JONES and MARY BATES. She was born October 31, 1847 in Coweta County, Georgia, and died January 16, 1924 in Carroll County, Georgia. Notes for WILLIAM STEGALL BONNER: Some Confusion Here Due to lack of documentation and conflicting reports, William Stegall Bonner has become somewhat of a wall of confusion that can not be scaled. I had believed that William was married two times but have recently came to believe that he was actually married three times. There is however some discrepancies that need a bit of research. William did marry sisters, daughters of Nasa and Mary Bates Jones of Coweta County, Georgia. He first married Martha Ann Jones in Carroll County on December 31, 1868. She was born March 25, 1840 and has been listed as dying May 24, 1878. The date of her death may be in error. From that marriage at least one child is known to have been born, that being Georgia Ann Bonner, born October 09, 1869. She is listed incorrectly in the 1870 Census for Carroll County as being male. Fact is she married and had children. William's last wife was Missouri Caroline Jones. Seven children are known to have been born to this marriage. She was born October 31, 1847 and died January 16, 1924 in Carroll County. The problems rest between these two marriages. I have seen in some reports that William and Martha had four more children. They were; John Thomas, William Lee, Robert Anderson, and Smithey. Now another report has surfaced that claim John Thomas and Robert Anderson to be the children of William Bonner and Catherine Fitzmier. This could very well be the case. There are however some conflict in the dates. John Thomas has been listed in all reports as being born in Savannah, Georgia, October 17, 1871. Robert has been listed as being born May 20, 1875. There are two children listed in one report as being the children of Martha that are not listed in the report on William and Catherine. They are; William Lee, born February 05, 1872 , possibly in Savannah and Smithey born February 24, 1877 in Carroll County. Smithey died January 26, 1878. When William Lee died is unknown. The conflicts in dates are, Martha is listed as dying May 24, 1878. John Thomas Bonner's birth is October 17, 1871. I suppose that it is possible, but unlikely, that William and Martha may have divorced. I believe however that the following is correct. William and Martha married and had one child, Georgia Ann. Martha probably died about 1870, after the Census was taken. William moved to Savannah where he met and married Catherine Fitzmier, probably a widow. They had four children; John Thomas, William Lee, Robert Anderson, and Smithey. They must have moved to Carroll County after the birth of William. Catherine must have died about the same time as Smithey in 1878. William married Missouri August 29, 1878. William and Missouri are buried at the Old Camp United Methodist Church Cemetery as well as Robert and Smithey. Where Martha and Catherine are buried I do not know. This scenario may be totally incorrect but given the circumstances it does seem to fit a little better. Following is information found on descendants of William and Catherine. John Thomas Bonner was born in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia October 17, 1871. He married Ada Lee Ola Adcock in Carroll County, Georgia June 20, 1896. She was a daughter of George Wesley Adcock and Mary Ann Entrekin, born July 09, 1879 and died May 14, 1955. Date of death for John is unknown. He is buried in Mount Zion, Carroll County, Georgia. John and Ada had the following children; Walter, Pearl, Mamie Jewell. No information has been found on Walter. Pearl married John Pope and had nine children. Mamie, born November 03, 1898 in Georgia, married Paul James Colton in Arkansas January 20, 1930. He was a son of James Bailey Colton and Cora Adelle Miller, born Octtober 11, 1891 in Hickman Mills, Missouri. He died in Rogersville, Missouri in 1959. Mamie's date of death is unknown. Mamie and Paul had at least two children, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Child of WILLIAM BONNER and MARTHA JONES is: i. GEORGIA A.8 BONNER, b. October 09, 1869, Carroll County, Georgia; d. Unknown, Carroll County, Georgia; m. (1) WILLIAM FELIX HUCKEBA, April 14, 1887, Carroll County, Georgia; b. 2. I am new to this list and was going to ask a few questions but decided to browse through some of the post first and I believe I have his the jackpot. I do want to ask one question though. What was the last name of Frances, the wife of Benjamin/Benjiman Bonner born 1748/49 and died 1815? I have her dates as 1754-1837. I saw her last name as Dempsey somewhere but would like to know if that is right. I have been to the websites of Edward Crabtree, Jr. and Ray Gurganus but didn't find her. By the way, those are great sites. My 4th great grandmother was Charlotte/Charlotta Bonner (daughter of Bryant/Briant Bonner and Anna Harris) who married Jeremiah Martin. Benjamin Bonner was my 6th great grandfather. Denise Mangel North Carolina born South Carolina

    3. Hi Listers, We now have 7 samples returned, representing 5 different "clans". I have updated the data table, but not the network diagram (due to computer problems). The page is here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna> We should also be getting our first example of a 'proxy test' in soon as well. This is where the person interested in the BONNER genealogy has another person (brother, father, cousin, etc.) tested on their behalf. Remember, these places on the Y chromosome that are tested mutate fairly slowly, so most any male BONNER who shares known (male) BONNER ancestry with you should represent you equivalently. So try to find a willing male BONNER to get tested :-) Cheers, Gregg

    1. [BONNER] Col. Henry Bonner m. Nancy (aka Ann) Cate
    2. Bonner, Gregg
    3. Hi Folks, I am trying to find information on Col. Henry Bonner, and his wife, Nancy Cate. Firstly, who are his parents? I see that most people say John Bonner and Jane Cook were his parents, but I have never seen evidence of such. Also, at WorldConnect, half the databases say that he was born 1724, and the other half say 1731. Interestingly, both have him dying aged about 98. Does anyone know when he was born, and why the discrepancy? Finally, in the lists of his children, it seems to me that there is a big mess. Most of the lists seem to me to be a mix of children of his, and also lumped in children of Richard Bonner and Frances Mitchell, and then some other ones for good measure. Does anyone know who his kids were? Does anyone know who the kids of Richard Bonner and Frances Mitchell were? This family started off in Virginia in the Prince George/Surry/Sussex/Petersburg area, and ended up in Georgia. And of course, I am wanting to have tested the BONNER descendants of these folks as part of the BONNER Surname DNA Project. Any information is appreciated :) Cheers, Gregg http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/

    3. Hi Kenny - I don't have your Matilda Bonner in my records, but there may be a connection to my Bonner line, I just haven't found it yet. My G. Grandfather was JOHN WILLIAM FLETCHER EMMETT DELAFAYETTE BONNER. He was born February 11, 1823 in Forsythe, Monroe, GA, and died September 29, 1896 in Hickory Flat, Chambers, AL. He married MARGERY ANNE STEWART December 18, 1857 in Heard Co. GA, daughter of WILLIAM STEWART and MOURNING MULLINS. She was born May 19, 1837, and died August 08, 1912 in Standing Rock, Chambers, AL Methodist Church. There may also be a connection here: My Grandmother's sister married a Shackleford. TOMMIE LESTER SHACKLEFORD was born November 11, 1896 in Carrollton, Carroll, GA, and died December 20, 1981 in Dalton, GA. He married LENA VIRGINIA LYLE August 03, 1919, daughter of ENOCH LYLE and SARA POWLEDGE. She was born April 21, 1901 in Carrollton, Carroll, GA, and died April 16, 1986 in Dalton, GA. If you know of a connection to either of these families, I would like to hear from you. 1. [BONNER] BONNER Surname DNA Project - update
    2. Bonner, Gregg
    3. Hello Listers, Today we received the results of BONNER DNA sample #5. This sample was rather unlike any of the previous four samples, and as such, represents a third "clan" of BONNER. There will no doubt be more clans discovered as samples continue to come in. Our results are a little unusual in that all the clans seem to come from a single source from long ago. That is to say that of the three clans identified thus far, no pair of clans are (significantly) more closely related than any other pair of clans. Moreover, the common ancestor of the three clans almost certainly predated the use of the surname BONNER (at least 1,500 years ago, according to my calculations). We do now have a "litmus test" for two of the clans. For example, if you are a BONNER descendant of William Bonner and Nancy Chappell, then you WILL have a DNA type that is like "Node 'B' DNA". So anyone who thinks they may have this descent can get tested and get a pretty cut-and-dried answer. Otherwise, the recruitment effort is still under way. We need more samples to gain "critical mass". This test has already more or less proved my line up to my g4-grandfather. I am hoping with more tests, it will help me prove further back. And (of course) what helps me will also help anyone else who is interested in BONNER genealogy. Please help me in the recruitments effort :) Do you know any male BONNERs? The updated page is here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/ <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/bonnerdna/> You will notice the "BONNER Network Diagram", which graphically displays the results of the DNA tests. There are clearly three separate branches. Each mutation of the Y chromosome is represented in red text along the path from the now putative common ancestor (median vector 1, or "mv1") to each of the nodes (i.e., clans), represented in yellow.
